Honey, Where Shall We Moon?: Part 1

February 15th, 2011 @ 2:47 pm by Mrs. Lox

Today I’m going to tell you a story about just one way in which the hive has changed our wedding. But first, a basic truth about Mr. Lox and me. We have really different vacation styles. Like, really different. As in, I told him about a year ago that I really wanted to go on a cruise. In my mind, I was picturing lying by a pool, unlimited food, and fun excursions like snorkeling. Mr. Lox did not see cruises that way. He got excited and sent me links to all of these cruises to the Galapagos Islands and other very nature-heavy destinations. His cruises were on small ships with nature lectures every night. I almost cried.

Now, we have been able to work with it so far. We have found ways to take his radical vacation ideas and morph them into something I will enjoy too. For instance, when we went to San Juan Island this past summer, Mr. Lox wanted to go kayaking. I, on the other hand, have the upper-body strength of a small insect. Kayaking sounds like my idea of torture. Solution? Whale watching. We were on the water and doing something nature related. However, it wasn’t a highly physical activity, and I wasn’t bored. Compromise is good.

But if I’m 100% honest with you, I would tell you that usually vacations go a little more his way and a little less mine. And for our honeymoon, I really wanted something that would allow us to concentrate on each other in a relaxed non-action-packed environment. I also wanted to go somewhere new, and that would probably require a passport. And I was dead set on a pool and maybe some snorkeling. And for once, Mr. Lox must have decided to let me have it my way.

I was looking all-inclusive, and that to me meant Sandals. That’s when I saw Mrs. Seashell’s honeymoon recaps. I was sold! I immediately found a travel agent that dealt with the Palace Resorts properties and added booking our honeymoon to my to-do list.

Perfect, right? Except we have booked our honeymoon, and it won’t be there. But I’ll get to that in my next post.

Did your ideas about your honeymoon change over time? What influenced you?

Hehe. Mr Lox sounds much like Mr Jeep.
Our honeymoon plans changed wildly in the first few months–Europe! Caribbean! South Pacific catamarans!–and the whole time I couldn’t shake the nagging feeling about how much I hate air travel. I finally decided to bring up going on a road trip instead when he came to me with the very same idea. That’s gone through a couple iterations too, but I’m so excited about it!

We’re headed to Europe for our honeymoon. Some people look at us a little funny when we’re not going somewhere tropical with a beach… but it’s just not us.

This rings a bell…I was all for going to Europe and thought he would love to spend a week or two in Italy. But he wanted to relax - meaning no language barrier and a beach. In the 7 years we had been together, we had never gone on tropical beachy trip. We went to a beach maybe once or twice (PS, we live <1 mile away from a beach). We went to Hawaii, and it was awesome, and I learned my new husband actually likes the beach!

LOL - galapagos islands. i totally want to go there, too. :) We’re narrowing down our choices…allwe know is that it must involve a beach, hot weather and lots of umbrella drinks. :)

Our ideas certainly changed — and it’s all MONEY’s fault. That and my limited vacation days. No galavanting off to faraway islands for the P’s.

I’m with Mr Lox - I’d TOTALLY do a Galapagos Islands cruise! ;) We ruled it out because it was SO expensive.

@Miss Ostrich: But your wedding is in Hawaii - the most beautiful hot weather and beaches I’ve ever seen! Or … you could come to Sydney? :D

It’s not always easy to have different vacation ideas when in a couple… With my ex we have completely opposite ideas of what a vacation should be, and even when trying to compromise we just couldn’t… Luckily with my current FI we have very similar preferences so it’s much easier! Sounds like for you it is possible to compromise AND get to do a lot of new fun activities, so it’s not that bad :-)

Have I been married long enough to justify a second honeymoon yet? Because that sounds wonderful….

We might be doing one of those nature Galapagos cruises this year — it’s the only kind of cruise I would consider! ;)
