Pasty Skin No More!!!

February 16th, 2011 @ 5:51 pm by Mrs. Buttons

I don’t know about you, but the chilly winter weather this year has really made me…pale.

I live in Florida; I like to be tan. However, a trip to the tanning bed is not on my list of to-dos. Therefore, as the weeks have passed and the temperatures have been low, my skin has turned a nasty shade of…green (yes, green. I have olive skin, so I look pretty sickly when I don’t have a tan!). I’ve tried a few sunless tanning products in the past, but I have never been completely sold on one particular brand. One turns you a little too orange, one of them left some stains on my clothing, and many of them end up smelling funny. The stench follows me around all day and makes me incredibly self-conscious: surely everyone else can smell me from a mile away, right???

Last week I made a fantastic discovery.

Pasty Skin No More!!! : wedding beauty tampa Photo 21 photo-21

I present to you: Xen-Tan.

It is a line of sunless tanning products, and they are awesome! I have been using the ‘Transform Luxe’ lotion for a week now, and my pasty skin is a thing of the past! At $30, the bottle was a bit more of an investment than other lotions I’ve used previously, but I think it was worth the splurge. The lotion is thin in consistency and applies evenly. Another advantage is that it has a light vanilla scent, which is much more pleasant than the Cheez-It smell I seemed to reek of when I used other lotions (I’m not sure why…it just always smelled like Cheez-Its to me…). Now: I don’t look like I just stepped off of the beach somewhere in the Caribbean (that would be crazy…I’m pretty sure that everyone would notice if I went from Casper-white to bronzed statue status), but I have managed to give myself a natural looking glow. And, I feel 100 times better than I did a week ago!

To take a look at the entire product line, you can visit the Nordstrom website. They have an array of products, including face tanners (although I personally don’t think you need those…I just use the body lotion on my face too), body scrubs, and bronzing powder. And: right now Nordstrom is running a $5 shipping special if you order $50 or more of beauty products…so you can pick up a few more wedding day beauty items while you’re at it!

Have you used sunless tanning products before? Do you have any good/bad experiences to share?

I hate that smell too. Cheese-its is definitely a good way to describe it.

thanks for the tip, i will check this stuff out (even though i’m gross and sort of lik the smell of self-taner…) have you tried any of their other products, like the mousse?

I think I’ve used so many different types I’m immune to the scent, but that doesn’t mean everyone around me is, too. Thanks for the tip!!

I’m the kind of gal who’s meant to be pale. I don’t even really get tan when I’m in the sun… I just burn and then I’m pale again. So I gave up on even sunless tanners and just embrace my pasty white self now. ;)

I’m glad you found something that works! Could you post pics of before and after? I’m debating the tanning booth vs. lotion vs. pasty white :)

Have you found that the lotion works well on your legs? My legs do. not. tan, so by the end of the summer I look like one of those circus shows where my top half has a nice sun-kissed glow while my legs double as reflectors when I run.

Thank you! My skin in the midst of an Estonian winter is really freakishly pasty!

@tea: Haha! I hadn’t even realized that until you pointed it out!

@kjwinter: This was the first product in their line that I tried. If you go to Nordstrom to purchase it, someone should be able to help you select the product that would work best for you!

@JillBill: I think I’m the other way around: I’m convinced that everyone else can smell me, but I bet it is all just in my head. Although, Mr. B says he can smell the other tanning products when I’ve used them in the past…

@SweetSweet: Before/after pics would have been a smart idea, no? Hm…the best I can do is that these photos were taken at one of my palest points: http://rufflesandtruffles.com/?p=1705 and these were taken on Saturday: http://rufflesandtruffles.com/?p=1999 - like I mentioned: it isn’t like I just stepped off a beach in the Caribbean, but there definitely is a difference (in person…I’m not sure if you would be convinced by the photos).

@Miss Tartlet: Whoa - that is interesting!!! My legs seemed to have tanned just fine I think! The problem spot is my feet: I keep trying to get the lotion applied evenly, yet I have ended up with a few splotchy stains on my tootsies for some reason or another…

You look amazing! (in zat sexy dress) I definitely see the diff! I’m curious, how did you get such an even application? That’s where I always fault, yknow? Like, how do you do your back? Did you exfoliate first? Again, you look awesome! Way to be a hottie.

I remember trying out self-tanner when I was in middle school - and I think it was brand new on the market. I got splotchy coverage, and orange palms. And any natural sun just burns right through - no tan in the process! So I’ve just accepted the fact that I’m meant to be pale! But I’m so glad you’ve found a tanner that works for you. :)
