New Job: Interior Designer?

February 16th, 2011 @ 12:54 pm by Mrs. Crepe

Since we’re planning this wedding long distance, Mr. Crepester and I schedule meetings over the phone to discuss details. Something that has been so helpful in this process is Dropbox. Whenever I have photos or links to share, I can compile them in folders and, in a few minutes, the mister can access them.

Last night we had one of those phone/web meetings. Mr. Crepe had taken photos of the space, and here is basically what we are working with:

Sorry about the blurry photo. It’s a lucky thing my secret superpower is Googling.

Isn’t that a beautiful photograph? It makes me feel even more excited for the day I’m going to be looking down this aisle at the love of my life, surrounded by our family and friends. This area is so gorgeous already that we didn’t feel like it needed much decorating. The tentative plan is to hang big bunches of baby’s breath along the aisle, keeping it loose and ethereal. Simple and sweet.

This next room is the one that I’m a tad more nervous about.

First, let me say that this is a GREAT rec area for a church. It’s shiny, new, and so spacious. I’ve heard that the sound is also really amazing in here. But it doesn’t look like a reception area…yet. We’ve planned for an evening reception that’s mostly candlelit. As the ceiling is quite high, we’re hoping that the darkness keeps all of the bars up there obscured. Mr. Crepe thinks that we can transform the space with strung lights and fabric. I hope he’s right! I’ve never had to think about decorating a space this large and, honestly, it’s scaring me a bit. On the plus side, the space is very modern and an excellent blank slate. But where exactly to start? Oy.

Did you have to play interior designer for your reception? How did you do it?

Wow! I think you are absolutely right that the church does not need a lot of decor, it really is just beautiful by itself, I second the baby’s breath idea, or some other white flower.

Doing fabric draping on the ceiling of the rec area will completely transform the space. It may be a financial investment, but if you can swing it, then I say go for it!

Gorgeous church!! I agree with ktisthatbees taht fabric will certainly help define the space. Are there any places where you can rent draperies? If not, check out Jo Ann Fabrics and wait til it goes on sale!!

I think fabric draping would add the perfect touch! What a great space to work with. We didn’t have too much to do in our venues tent, but I always had dreams of elegantly draped fabric…it just wasn’t in our budget.

@ktisthatbees: @Miss Treble: @Mrs. Locket: Our first instinct was to drape with fabric, but the trick now is how to attach it to things. There are alot of rules when it comes to city churches, where you’re not allowed to pin or use adhesive. It’s a bit tricky so we’re still trying to figure out how!

One of the things our florist offers for big spaces like that is tiny oil lanterns hung on fishing wire. It looks like tiny stars floating above you - really gorgeous and unique.

The church you’re getting married in is breathtaking! I don’t have any experience working with a blank slate, but I have definitely seen spaces like the one you’re working with totally transform for weddings. Have you considered using uplighting?

@AprilBride10: Thanks for the suggestion- I’ll look into how we might be able to incorporate that. It sounds beautiful!

@Miss Tartlet: Thank you!! I’m not sure what uplighting is.. I’ll look it up.

Any and ALL suggestions will be taken! This is a huge job, haha. Harnessing the strength of the hive is a must here. ;)

talk to your local rental company about pipe and draping the area. They will build a pipe framework around the space and hang the drapes from that. no damage to the walls!
it can be expensive depending on the rental company, but would certainly help you transform the space!

We are also having a reception in our church’s rec hall, but I’m a bit jealous of yours! It’s definitely more open and modern than our, well, gym-y reception venue.

When we first decided to go with the gym, there were two photos that I saved and referred back to every time I felt nervous about the space:

Though I know our budget won’t allow a transformation quite so dramatic, with a little lighting and draping, I think it can be beautiful too.

Ooooh! So much potential, but I don’t blame you for feeling overwhelmed!

The first thing I would do is drape the ceiling. Not the cheapest option, but it’ll bring the ceiling down to make the room seem more intimate and soften the bars and industrial look of the bars.

I lucked out that our venue is lined with wine barrels, uplights, chiavari chairs and chandeliers, but then again.. I couldn’t play interior designer for the life of me!

@Miss French Toast: You ARE a lucky one, aren’t you? I wish we had the budget for a place like that, but unfortunately we have to work with what we have.

@Chocolatte: We did look into it and it already seemed much more expensive than we could do. We might revisit that option after trying out some DIY options though.. Thanks for the suggestion!

Wowsers at the church - but that’s a lot of space to fill for the reception. I agree with @fromcharleston, definitely do some draping to soften things up a bit!

@JackieDe: Thanks for chiming in.. I knew I wasn’t alone in having to transform a “gym” but it’s tough to find inspiration photos. It’s a tough job but I think both you and I will find the right way to work with the space!!

@Miss Elephant: @Mrs. Seashell: Thanks!!

@fromcharleston: @Miss Jaguar: Thanks for the tip, I definitely agree with both of you. Draping will have the most impact on a space that large.

Totally read “Mr. Crepester” as “Mr. Creepster.”

It’s been a long week, sorry ;P
