Registry Review Rewind

February 16th, 2011 @ 2:05 pm by Mrs. Pain au Chocolat

Registering over a three-day holiday weekend is a productive use of time…except when everyone else has the day off and is hiding from the 100-degree June heat. You can escape the heat, but not the crowds. We had a whole day with nothing planned and just two store registries to tackle.

Source (If you’re into consumer behavior, the linked article is interesting.)

1. Macy’s: Basics with a little luxury

We didn’t have an appointment. Correction, we didn’t know we needed an appointment. We loitered at the registry desks, waiting for two couples to complete their initiation. The black-lacquer walls, soft lighting, Muzak, and cubby-holed fine china tried really hard to demurely whisper, “You know you want this,” but those marketing efforts were lost us on us. We were anxious to get scanning, as we’d squirreled away a stack of dinnerware and serving pieces that were probably being restocked as we sat idly. Which reminds me, Macy’s needs mock-entertaining spaces, like mini dining rooms, where you can lay out selections to see how they look together. At the very least, they need a table at the registry desks for this.

Now entrusted with a scan gun, we resumed. A young couple, blissfully unaware of the complexities they could have faced, simply scanned without anything more than a cursory “Do you like this?” Mr. P and I looked at each other and shrugged. TWO hours soon disappeared, and our only warning was growling tummies. We wrapped it up before we started growling at each other!

* Intermission *

This time was used to stuff our faces with Cheesecake Factory appetizers and mojitos while reviewing the Macy’s list. It looks boring: lots of neutral, uninspired items…which is a serious violation to this design girl. But, the pieces need to move seamlessly from house to house and season to season. I reframed my thinking: classic, not boring. Acceptable.

* End Intermission *

2. Williams-Sonoma: High-quality gadgets, rare pieces, and the all-important cookware

We love to cook, so WS was a no-brainer. Shopping here was fun; maybe that was the mojitos talking. We were in our element with gourmet choices left and right. No bad decisions here. The stainless cookware was around the corner! Our pre-registering research was about to pay off. It was the moment we’d been practicing for. Just as Mr. P was about to scan, he second guessed our pick, mostly out of guilt over appearing greedy. After a quick pep talk, he was getting giddy over mesh grill pans, and I happy-danced as he scanned in my coveted marble rolling pin. We were done in half the time it took at Macy’s.

(Cute uni-tasker. What would Alton say?)

And here’s the part where you benefit from our mistakes:

1. Avoid scanning seasonal, clearance, or smaller (non-store) brands. This is especially true if you’re setting up the registry months in advance. Stuff gets discontinued. It’s usually the stuff you fall in love with.

2. Check your registry once you get home. Half the stuff from our Macy’s list was scheduled to be discontinued (??), so the cake stand (but not the cover), half the towels, and the serving bowls will disappear, time TBD. It was then that we understood our newlywed friends’ frustrations.

3. Schedule your visit during off-peak hours. You’ll feel less rushed and jostled as well as getting more personalized attention. That is, unless you’re a “scan gun and run” type.

4. Don’t be so picky. If you have a traditional registry, the store may not stock specific models/brands. Not a bad thing unless you’ve got your heart set on a certain something, like a vacuum with a high Consumer Reports rating. In this case, you may want to consider an online retailer to pick up those odds ’n ends.

5. Get your buzz on. Ladies, I’m not going to lie: alcohol helps. Whether you have a reluctant shopper or scan-gun hog, it makes the experience less like a chore and more like fun (i.e., something other than shopping for those with XY chromosomes). I’m not advocating downing a bottle of wine—just enough to take the edge off. You can always edit the list later (see #2).

Just do it online. :) Even the Macys registry can be done online.
Check your registries monthly as items do go out of stock often.

We registered in the store initially but have been editing our registries online to make sure we don’t have duplicates and adding items we forgot or they didn’t have in the store.

i just handed FI the gun. he was not happy about going (shopping is NOT his thing) until her realized he had the “power” in his hands! suddenly he actually cared about which china pattern we registered for; it gave him a sense of ownership i think.
it also opened up some good discussions about family during the holidays and entertaining the neighbors!

I may have to give William Sonoma a shot for registering for our at home reception. :-P

yay for williams sonoma! i second Gerbera’s comment about doing it online. Mr. O and i registered for everything in the comforts of our PJs, on our couch. it was awesome.

You could make mini heart pancakes with that uni-tasker! Besides, although I love Alton, sometimes cuteness can not be ignored.

I think it is good to have a whole range of prices.. and we did a couple national chains to make things easier for out of town guests and a local store (to support a small business with great customer service) for local guests.

Also, I say shoot for the stars.. some people might only spend $30 but you never know and all of a sudden that totally beautiful Pottery Barn quilt you thought no one would buy you shows up on your doorstep as a pre-shower gift! There’s no penalty for things being left on the registry afterward, I think having more choices is better than have too little. At least, as a wedding guest I always liked having many choices.

Great tips!! We registered last summer and some of the stuff is no longer available. We have replaced items, added items and deleted items online which is fast and easy!

agree with registering online! 1 afternoon at bloomingdale’s was enough for my man, so the rest of our 5 registeries (oh yes that’s another tip- don’t let people talk you into registering at stores you don’t like but your guests do) were done from the comfort of the couch.

Mr. FT and I didn’t do a registry, but if we had one.. I suspect I’d go crazy with the scanning gun. >=) …muhahaha

We’re doing our first (and only!) registry scan this weekend and I’m excited and nervous at the same time. Good tips on the budget and clearance stuff going out of stock before the wedding - I’m such a bargain shopper that I automatically gravitate to those items!

Great tips! We fell victim to #1 and had a bunch of seasonal items on our registry (even though we didn’t know it at the time). Fortunately, we did get around to #2 to catch our error, and while partaking in #5 finessed our registry from the comfort of our home. :)

It was a pretty funny experience.
FI hated the idea of doing it, but we got a glass of champagne when we arrived at our appointment, and he was all about it. (see #5 instruction)
He got SO into it. Picking china patterns, silver patterns, you name it. He wants to go back and add furniture now.

Obvs I loved it…it’s like shopping without the bill! woo :)

I hate to say… I own the heart shaped egg fryer and it kinda sucks. It isn’t non-stick, so the eggs (and yes, pancakes) get stuck to the sides and rip when you try to flip them. If you spray it with Pam, they get greasy. Just say no!

And registering is what FI is looking forward to the most! I’m excited too. :D

I totally hear you on the slightly boring, neutral stuff - we live in an apt but will hopefully buy a house later this year, so I stayed pretty safe on the registry. Basic white dishware, white and off-white towels, neutral placemats, etc. But who knows if our future house will have a pink or bright orange or brown bathroom? I figure I’ll want to buy more fun stuff later!

@Gerbera & @Lo: Online registries for bricks-and-mortar stores are a dream come true. I tried that route first but didn’t want sandstone coasters to be the first item we registered for.
@Mrs. Meerkat: DO IT! We’re serious food people so it made sense.
@Miss Elephant: We registered last summer (June). Talk about planning ahead. I figure we’ll add the seasonal stuff (bedding, updated models of small appliances) sometime in the next few months.
@toshella: Totally helpful to know that they’re not non-stick! Mr. P, smarty-pants that he is, suggested a heart-shaped cookie cutter after the pancake or egg is made.
@eeper: That’s how I made peace with the “boring” stuff. Definitely rather have quality neutral pieces and add color in accessorizes later — it’s like clothes shopping!
@Miss Zebra: Mr. PAC just turned and looked at me because I was laughing so hard. Insiiiide joke, hon.

Ugh, thanks to this post I just checked our registry, and my favorite wine glasses are out of stock! I replaced them with a similar set (thank goodness) but that was one of the things we really loved. Now I’m clicking through every. single. item. to check and make sure they’re available.

Thanks!

We just registerd yesterday. We went to a Crate & Barrel party which made it a lot more fun for the Mr. I think I will just stick the one registry though, I can’t imagine keeping track of multiple things.

I love WS! But you’re so right about the seasonal/clearance/discontinued items - that was the biggest frustration of the entire registry process.
