Online Dress Shopping - Part II

February 17th, 2011 @ 2:06 pm by Ms. Sloth

When we last left off on my online shopping adventure

  • I’d ordered a dress from The Limited that looked horrendously awful, and back it went.
  • And I’d ordered a dress from J. Crew that looked surprisingly great (and which received overwhelmingly rave reviews from the hive), which is presently in my closet.
  • And I’d placed an order for a BHLDN dress that looked exactly like an over-budget Melissa Sweet I’d been coveting for months.

Now for the next installment of the story, called “Sloth Causes a Scene at her Job.”

My mother came to have lunch with me at my office yesterday. While we were eating, one of my co-workers came to me to tell me that a box from BHLDN had arrived! When we got back to my desk, everyone was dying to see my dress, and since my mother was there, I figured we’d have some girl time while I tried it on.

My coworkers were as excited as I was, and one of them documented the experience.

First, I opened the box as Mom looked on.

And then we inspected the details.

And after I ran to the bathroom to try it on, Mom helped zip me up.

I was wearing my jeans and boots under the dress, so there was no full-length photo taken. So I took some myself after I got home.

And here it is with the bolero I ordered from Etsy:

It’s a bit long and would need to be shortened a few inches to just below my knee. But besides that, it fits really well, it’s comfortable, and, well, it’s a very reasonable facsimile to the dress I’ve been in love with forever.

But there’s that J. Crew that looked surprisingly awesome…

What to do, what to do?

There is a big part of me that wants to keep both, wear the J. Crew for the ceremony and wear the BHLDN for the reception. But even though we’re no longer having budget woes, and even though both dresses combined still cost less than my original dress budget, I still don’t know if I can justify wearing two dresses to the wedding. It just seems so unnecessary.

I’ve got my mind about 80% made up, but I wanted to ask you, hive: what would you do if you were in my situation? J. Crew or BHDLN? BHLDN or J. Crew?

J. Crew or BHDLN?

The JCrew is so much more flattering and “bridal” without being TOO bridal. The BHLDN dress looks like a nice sundress to me. I vote JCrew.

I like the Jcrew one much more as well. It just looks better on you. Because of all the horizontal lines and details on the BHLDN dress I fear after shortening it it won’t look quite like the same dress anymore.

Since the J. Crew dress is already pretty casual, I agree that you don’t really *need* a second reception dress. But they’re both so pretty, I can see why it would be tough to decide and stick to one. ;)

Can’t wait to see what you end up doing!

I absolutely agree with ohheavenlyday. The BHLDN dress is nice but it doesn’t scream bridal. However, wearing it for the reception is a nice compromise.

Besides the marriage license and offician EVERYTHING in a wedding is “unnecessary”. Don’t play that game with yourself. It’s pretty and if you can have some things you like, you should.

Definitely the J.Crew dress. It’s bridal without being overtly so, and it’s incredibly flattering on you! You look amazing in it!

Wear both! The JCrew seems a little more “bridal” and special to me, the BLDN dress is perfect for a fun reception dress. Especially if you take it up a bit.
And btw, you look fabulous! The diet and exercise plan is really showing!

I love the BHLDN! However, I agree with the concern about shortening it. Are you sure? I think the current length looks nice on you. I actually voted for both, but after seeing all the preference for J. Crew I just have to stick up for BHLDN!

Definitely the JCrew. The BHLDN looks too sundressy or picnicy to me.

You look too happy in the picture where your mom is zipping you up to get rid of the BHLDN dress. They both look great, I say keep them both!

Could you wear the BHDLN to a shower or on your honeymoon? If you can’t justify having two wedding dresses, then figure out how else to incorporate that dress. Personally I would choose the JCrew but that’s because I’m not excited about the whole short dress thing.

It’s hard to choose between being a long or short dress bride. I think the JCrew one looks amazing on you, but if you are really wanting to be a short dress bride, what can you do?

The BHDLN dress also looks like a sundress to me because of the matte finish of the fabric. The other one is so elegant and it looks great on you. But the BHDLN looks good on you too.

I’m probably biased to the J. Crew one because I initially wanted a dress like the BHDLN one, but ended up falling for a long, fitted, strapless lace dress.

The idea of changing dresses partway through would NEVER work for me because I’d never want to take off the first dress! (And if I did, then I don’t know why I wouldn’t just wear the second one for the whole event.)

I voted for the JCrew dress. I think it is the most flattering and if I’m remembering correctly you plan on wearing some amazing accessories right?? I think the BHDLN may have a bit much going on for the accessories…but that’s just my opinion. They’re both gorgeous and you’ll look beautiful either way.

OMG, SUCH A HARD DECISION!!!! I love them both! Ergh, I guess it really comes down to which one you feel the most beautiful in and how you’ve always envisioned what you would like like on your wedding day…I WAS all about the JCrew dress but now, I’m really not sure…I guess keeping/wearing both would be the best compromise but I understand the idea that two dresses is unnecessary (and to be honest, the idea never really appealed to me.) Hmmmm….tough call!

@Katie:

Agreed on the fabric. The Melissa Sweet dress is more satiny which offers more elegance- the BHLDN dress is pretty but just not very formal, IMO.
