Mrs. Brooch, Arlington, VA Age and Occupation: 25, Writer/Editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Front Desk Manager Engagement Date: October 3, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Oxon Hill Manor About Me: I’m an indecisive girlie-girl with a motor mouth, can-do attitude, and knack for making others laugh. I dream of becoming a best selling novelist like Elizabeth Gilbert or Julie Powell (a girl can dream, right?), and love long road trips, a beautiful countryside, music, blogs, books, and all things vintage/thrift/antique/or homemade. I’m a Virgo, i.e. overly sensitive, emotional, and critical, and there’s no such thing as short and sweet in my world. I want to say and do it all. Mr. Brooch grounds me. I point where to go and he figures out the way. He’s a pragmatic fancy-pants who enjoys video games and movies. We both adore our mutt, Rocky, and spending time with our amazingly supportive family and friends. We’re planning a garden wedding with a formal reception with lots of whimsy and unique, Southern-inspired details.

Discovering the Beauty of Letterpress

February 17th, 2011 @ 2:30 pm by Mrs. Brooch

Not long after we found Kyndal and had invitation proofs in hand, we started exploring different ways to print them. I checked with Paper Source, but their prices were too high. We tried printing a few from home, but the quality wasn’t good, and then our planner suggested talking with a local letterpress team, Letterpress Light.

I really liked the idea of supporting a local business that was somewhat new.  At this point, Mr. B and I were pretty desperate, too. We had to make a decision about our invitations soon and we both wanted to hire someone to do it all: the printing, and even addressing the envelopes for us.

While we waited for Pavaune to get back to us, we researched Letterpress Light and found out they use an exclusive printing technique known as the Compression Plate Process™, which gives imprints a 50 percent deeper press!  The other places we inquired with didn’t offer packages as inclusive—each color added to the invite was an additional cost, and printing addresses was also extra!

Heather, founder of the company definitely wanted to work with us. However, not all pre-made designs (remember, we already had ours), are possible to print using the Letterpress Light technique. We didn’t know if our custom ones would work so we had to give Heather Kyndal’s email address and keep our fingers crossed!

The suspense is killer, right?

In the end, we got to work with ’em! Yay!

Our invitation now hangs on this wall of “letterpress fame,” if you will, and we’re the proud parents of gorgeous, unique letterpress wedding invitations. Wow! I never thought I’d hear myself say such a thing! We have LETTERPRESS! Ahh!

To be clear, this is actually a different printing process from letterpress printing. It’s printed using a standard printer and then blind impressed to create the indentations to give a letterpress-style effect. The results do seem to be very nice, but they are different from straight-up letterpress printing (for example, overlays of two colors will not print through to create a third color, the ink will appear more opaque and less translucent, etc). People who are thinking of ordering should be aware of these differences. You may actually like the “light” process better, or you may be persuaded by the price difference, but it’s both a different process and a different result from letterpress printing.

@historienne: You are absolutely right! Thank you for clarifying! I guess the title of this post is a tad bit misleading! Thanks :)
