Boy Band

February 17th, 2011 @ 4:48 pm by Mrs. Pain au Chocolat

So what about Mr. P’s ring? After all, he is getting married too.

Much to my surprise, there are a lot of options out there for men’s bands. Gone are the days of a simple domed band in gold or white gold, satin or polished finish. The nuances in options are a little staggering. A friend summed it up well: ”Men don’t wear jewelry, so it makes sense they’re going to be picky about it.” Giving them lots of options ensures they get a ring they’re happy to wear.

I was surprised by the number of men’s bands in the cases at the store. Unlike me, Mr. P wasn’t fazed my the magnitude of rings and was able to point out a few he liked. He hadn’t done much pre-shopping, but had a sense of what he wanted to try on. No diamonds, nothing trendy, and nothing expensive.

Joel pulled his choices from the case. Mr. P reached for the first one and wriggled it on. He extended his hand to study it. And I started giggling. It came out of nowhere. It wasn’t nervous laughter. I’d never seen him wear any jewelry, and it just looked funny, in a good way. It was half realization that he was excited and taking an active role in this, and the rest realizing the weight of what we were doing. My laughter was contagious; soon Joel and Mr. P were chuckling. Joel said that was the best reaction he’d seen. (And that’s what I’m talking about when I say we want to go into things without expectations. You feel what you feel; nothing’s wrong or right.)

Mr. P felt the Scott Kay cobalt rings were too clunky and thick. Others were just too macho for him (screw heads, chains, tire tread, diamond plating). He liked the cheap (read: $100) titanium bands, but any scratches/dings would be permanent. His favorite? A simple brushed band with a beveled, polished comfort edge. And it comes in palladium.

I kept quiet while he was choosing; I didn’t want to influence his choice. None of them were objectionable anyway. The ring he picked was the one I preferred more than the others. He did it in under 20 minutes, too. Hey, at least one of us found a ring!

Did you go ring shopping together? If so, did your spouse decide without your help, or were you asked to weigh in?

That looks like my husband’s ring. It’s titanium, brushed finished. Honestly, the scratches really aren’t noticable and he’s been working on cars and playing with power tools. The brushing really hides a lot.

We went shopping together and I tried not to give any opinions until he had decided on one. I wanted Mr. E to pick what he liked and I just paid the bill :)

We did wedding ring shopping together. We walked up to the counter and said “we need to find wedding rings.” The jeweler said “let me see the engagement ring. OK, these things are what goes best.” Mine was the only one in the store that fit with my e-ring, and his was a brushed silver one with milgrain(?) details.

I practically chewed a hole in my tongue trying to keep my mouth shut while Mr. Lox looked at rings! But I managed it. :)

I hear you about keeping quite so you don’t influence him! I was saying ‘ooh, that’s nice! how about this one? What about that??!’ but then I realised that I should just let him pick it out himself! Then I was worried that he only picked the one he picked because I liked it, and it took a lot of reassurance from him that he’s a big boy, and wouldn’t pick a ring just because I said it was pretty - he had to love it too. :)

I kept quiet, too, even though he was leaning toward a two-tone band that I really didn’t like. In the end I love the band he chose as much as I love my own.

I love how the guys can pick out their rings in less time than it takes me to get ready in the morning. :-P

We went together to look at rings. He’s also getting palladium. It’s a Christian Bauer. Good choice in your band metal selection.

Nice ring choice. We looked at Palladium too but he might have decided on a tungsten ring he liked better. Same brushed metal look though. It is amazing how much easier it seems for the men!
