What Goes Up Must Come Down??

February 17th, 2011 @ 4:05 pm by Mrs. Pancakes

As you may or may not know, I won an amazing birdcage veil from One Little Dove a few months ago. It’s a lovely little veil, but I haven’t quite decided how I want to wear it. There are two issues:

1. Should I add a fascinator of some sort (feathers, flowers, a feather flower, crystals, etc.)? (I will deal with that in a separate post.)

2. Should I wear my hair up or hair down?

A few months ago Miss Sloth posted this first-look picture…

…which got me thinking about the birdcage-veil hair-up/hair-down dilemma. It also reminded me of this Style Me Pretty Costa Rica Wedding. (This couple is so gorgeous it’s not even fair!)

(In case you don’t remember, this wedding was planned by my wedding planner and photographed by my photographer. I know—they ARE awesome.)

So here’s the dilemma—it’s gonna be hot and humid in Costa Rica, so hair up seems like the more realistic option…BUT I also don’t wear my hair down that often, and I love the way my hair looks when it’s down. Plus, it is a special occasion, so maybe I should wear my hair down…

After looking at all the gorgeous hair-down options, it seems like an easy call…then you see all these:

There is something so bridal about a nice, loose up-do…it’s just so easy, and it’ll also make my neck and shoulders look better in my strapless dress. (I am strangely obsessed with my collar bone. I am convinced it is my most attractive body part!)

Sometimes it seems like the decisions never end!

What do you think? Did you pick your veil to match your desired hairstyle, or did you pick your hairstyle first and then choose the best accent (veil, flower, jeweled headband)?

I tried to pick my hairstyle but then had a few people remind me we would be outside and with my fine hair it would never stay up if the beach was breezy that day.

I picked the hairstyle first, then decided on accessories. Although I suppose you can make any combination work!

I’m getting married in very humid Bermuda so I am facing the same situation. I want to wear my hair down but I know it won’t stay put and having it up makes way more sense.

I’m clueless about hairstyle, but was dead set on my veil. My current plan is to march into the salon with it in hand and saying in the eternal words of Tim Gunn: “Make it work!” ;)

I’m a fan of the updo paired with a birdcage veil because I think it shows off the structure of the veil more. You’re going to look gorgeous however you wear your hair, though!

I picked my veil first and then chose my hairstyle. I had a birdcage veil and did an updo for my hairstyle. You can probably find pictures of it in my gallery.

I chose my hairstyle, and now I’ll be choosing the appropriate accent. Unlike you, I wear my hair down on a regular basis, so for a nice, fancy, romantic change, I’m going with a lovely updo.

Maybe you could do a test trial of each style with the cage, see which one you’re more comfortable wearing?

I haven’t really decided on either yet so I can’t even answer! Now I feel all wishy-washy. ;)

Both are beautiful, but you won’t feel glamorous if you’re uncomfortable, so if your hair sticking to the back of your neck in the heat and humidity is something that would bother you it might be a good idea to tip the scales if favour of an updo.

I’m going with the hairstyle first then the accessory. But I haven’t thought about hair or even done a hair trial. So maybe I’ll end up picking the accessory first because of time. Oh, it is a lot to figure out.

Hairstyle first! I cannnnot stand my hair down when I get sweaty. I will sweat that day because of nerves/excitement. Soooo…up it is! The veil I lust over will look great at the base of my updo.

Luckily I didn’t have too too much hair to decide what to do with, so I wore it down + bird cage/fascinator.
You have some pretty compelling evidence for both options there Pancakes, but I personally LOVE how modern/awesome the hair down +veil picture looks!
Luckily you’ll look beautiful whichever you choose!

I know I want my hair up, and the only veil I’m interested in is a birdcage one. I’ve been pretty certain on both points from the beginning!

@JillBill: Yay! for collarbone love!

You ladies have given me a lot of important things to think about… Maybe after a hair trial or two I’ll have a better idea of what I want.

What about the two options? You can have a loose updo for the ceremony and then have it down for the reception. I saw this on a recent wedding and loved it.

I went for trying to feel special, so I wore it up. You can wear the veil for part of the day (I had a flower and birdcage veil for the ceremony, and just the flower for the reception-though I hadn’t chosen to do that before-I just went with it).

Thanks for your super kind words :)
I would recommend hair up as it’s humid which tends to cause frizz and curls to fall (unless you have naturally curly hair, in which case, crazy curls!). Maybe have your hair down for the ceremony and then have it up for the evening??

I love the birdcage veil and after reading this blog, i’ve decided to go for it myself! Thanks for the inspiration. I will be having a costa rica wedding also and have decided to leave my hair down. Can you give any advice on flower vendors in Costa Rica? Musicians? Also, at first we wanted to make the wedding very simple but we’re realizing that there are certain expectations that we need to fulfill. Like favors, and cake etc. Are you shipping items prior to the wedding? Would love any advice as i’m down to 55 days and still haven’t figured it all out.

I made my hair flower, and then found a hairstyle that would flatter it. But I think whichever you choose - up or down - will be awesome! So many great styles to choose from.
