When I first began planning, I didn’t want a color scheme. I read on a blog somewhere (and this is how most stories start when they inevitably end with me getting a reality check) that a bride just chose details she loved, and the colors just came together without any amount of effort. That sounded like exactly what I wanted to do—let the event come together organically. Because I’m that laid back. (Somewhere in the distance, Mr. Crepe is laughing hysterically.)
So I started designing the invitations and decorations without any specific colors in mind. I realize now that this particular bride must have been some kind of sorceress. For me, designing an event that looks cohesive took serious work!
As things started to come together, I figured out that what I actually wanted was something multicolored and festive, like this:
It’s a warmish-weather wedding, so these colors would have been festive and so much fun. See homegirl’s wedding—check out the amazing BACKDROP at the dessert table! Here is their video so you can sneak a peek at more of the pretty deets.

Did you see how FABULOUS her mom was? What is that dress?? Amazing.
Anyway, as I kept thinking about the details, I became overwhelmed with the fact that I had to juggle color proportions. I know, what am I talking about?? It makes sense, I promise.
If there was too much of any one color, it changed the overall scheme—it stopped being multicolored and became more like a yellow wedding or a blue wedding. This was becoming way too complex, and I was quickly tumbling away from my original goal of keeping it all simple and easy.
It was around this time that I went shopping for bridesmaids’ dresses with the girls, and we all gravitated toward creams, pinks, and ivories, with a vintage vibe in mind. After they bought dresses in those hues, I thought, why not throw in an accent color to make it all a bit more modern? Not too sophisticated or elegant because, let’s face it, Mr. Crepe and I are neither of those things.
I started looking for inspiration boards and found perfect examples of what I had been imagining.
I think a blend of these two boards is the perfect depiction of what we’re going to be going for. The royal and dark blues keep it from being too feminine, while all the soft rose and gold tones will make it easy to find flowers and other decorations.
How did you deal with your color scheme? Anybody brave enough to throw caution to the wind and go without one, with magical results? I’d love to hear your color stories!
