About Mrs. Crepe

Colorstory

February 18th, 2011 @ 12:34 pm by Mrs. Crepe

When I first began planning, I didn’t want a color scheme. I read on a blog somewhere (and this is how most stories start when they inevitably end with me getting a reality check) that a bride just chose details she loved, and the colors just came together without any amount of effort. That sounded like exactly what I wanted to do—let the event come together organically. Because I’m that laid back. (Somewhere in the distance, Mr. Crepe is laughing hysterically.)

So I started designing the invitations and decorations without any specific colors in mind. I realize now that this particular bride must have been some kind of sorceress. For me, designing an event that looks cohesive took serious work!

As things started to come together, I figured out that what I actually wanted was something multicolored and festive, like this:

It’s a warmish-weather wedding, so these colors would have been festive and so much fun. See homegirl’s wedding—check out the amazing BACKDROP at the dessert table! Here is their video so you can sneak a peek at more of the pretty deets.

Did you see how FABULOUS her mom was? What is that dress?? Amazing.

Anyway, as I kept thinking about the details, I became overwhelmed with the fact that I had to juggle color proportions. I know, what am I talking about?? It makes sense, I promise.

If there was too much of any one color, it changed the overall scheme—it stopped being multicolored and became more like a yellow wedding or a blue wedding. This was becoming way too complex, and I was quickly tumbling away from my original goal of keeping it all simple and easy.

It was around this time that I went shopping for bridesmaids’ dresses with the girls, and we all gravitated toward creams, pinks, and ivories, with a vintage vibe in mind. After they bought dresses in those hues, I thought, why not throw in an accent color to make it all a bit more modern? Not too sophisticated or elegant because, let’s face it, Mr. Crepe and I are neither of those things.

I started looking for inspiration boards and found perfect examples of what I had been imagining.

I think a blend of these two boards is the perfect depiction of what we’re going to be going for. The royal and dark blues keep it from being too feminine, while all the soft rose and gold tones will make it easy to find flowers and other decorations.

How did you deal with your color scheme? Anybody brave enough to throw caution to the wind and go without one, with magical results? I’d love to hear your color stories!

I love these inspiration boards! The first one is so bright and summery and cheery and the second two are so elegant and vintage! I think your colors are going to look amazing!

Ive heard from some bridal books that it’s best to find your bridesmaids dress. That’s what I ended up doing, not intentionally though. Originally I wanted a wine color dress for the bridesmaids, but I couldntfind any that were nice and at the same time affordable for them. I ended up finding a great eggplant one from the limited and it looked great on all the ladies. After that, I ended up adding purple to my color scheme.

I love the colours you chose!! So fab. I, like you…didnt have a colour scheme in mind right away. i bought brown invites, cause they were on sale and went from there….eventually we bought bm dresses and they were green so things just started to come along…i ended up having a brown, green and ivory wedding with splashes of purple. It worked out fab!

I started out with one thing…I wanted lavendar hydreangeas. One of my bridesmaids was with me at my first dress search and loved the Pool color at Db. So we thought that would work. I am collecting milk glass and want my flowers to be very loose..no matchy matchy stiff arrangements. After awhile, the things I was collecting started to look like an Easter Egg. Finally I found an inspiration board..that inspired me! I threw out my aqua and pastels and am now a Navy and Pink wedding bride. When I told my groom that he will now have a Navy suit because our other colors where not very manly, he assured me that he’d wear a pink tuxedo if it made me happy. I love this man. But…now that I have my colors..navy, soft pink and a touch of fuscia..I am feeling much more in control of things.

Great colors! We didn’t use inspiration for our wedding. We just picked some colors and went with it. They weren’t all perfectly right and nothing was in balance, but it worked.

Crepe, don’t feel bad. I totally wanted to be that bride too. I didn’t even manage to order the STDs (*ha!*) before I realized it just wasn’t going to happen and picked some colors. :)

I didn’t create an inspiration board until 2 weeks ago. I was perfectly content to have the girls wear yellow and everything else would come together. Which was fine until Mr. P said he had no clue what I was talking about for X… and I realized putting my ideas and colors into a cohesive image would really help people who don’t live in my head.

Totally get what you mean about color proportions! Even of you want one color to be the focus, you have to temper it with something else.

Love either one. You can’t go wrong. I’ve always loved the “masculine” look of blue with the softening pink tones.

@The average bride: I think that’s just the easiest way, I’m glad it worked for both of us!

@Baileyh: Sounds like you were able to create it all organically, I think that’s awesome.

@MassageBee: Sounds like a lovely combo of colors!!

@TheFutureMcBride: You’re truly a laid back bride. I’m going to take a note from you and try to let it just be. ;)

@Miss Lox: Haha I love how we all have a few reality checks here and there. I’m not alone!

@Miss Pain au Chocolat: That’s exactly right- I had such a hard time explaining everything to him (and the family). It turned out that having boards made things so much clearer!

lovely!! We’re having a similar color scheme. Ivory, blush and navy. I like the hints of gold in yours, makes it feel warmer.

I also originally thought about doing a multicoloured wedding, I think I even had that same board saved (or a similar one) as inspiration but I too was having problems with the proportions of the colours. I was worried that unless I did it perfectly it would have just ended up looking weird….

Those colors are sooo dreamy. I wish I had multiple weddings to plan just so I could put them in action. They would make lovely nursery colors one day though (no where in the near future.)

So pretty! Snippet and Ink killed me though- ever time I saw a new board of hers, I wanted to change my colors. It was a problem!
