We Took Action…

February 18th, 2011 @ 1:21 pm by Mrs. Cinnamon Bun

You might remember my sappy love letter to Anthropologie about their Take Action dress. It was a beautiful-looking dress from my favourite clothing store, and in our wedding colours, to boot! A match made in heaven, right? I even found a time when both Cinnamaids and I were free to meet at the mall! No mean feat!

The Take Action Dress - Anthropologie

We met at the mall, and all was well. Cinnamon Buns dropped me off and said hi to the girls before going to get an oil change and groceries. I thought I was getting a great deal, being left at my favourite store while he traipsed around Safeway!

We picked up the dresses that had been reserved for my girls to try on, and went straight to the fitting rooms. I suppose the first warning sign should have been when the 5’4″ bridesmaid and the 6’1″ bridesmaid said they took the same size in dresses. I suppose my hope deep down was that it would fit tall Cinnamaid A, then we could get Cinnamaid K’s hemmed.

There are no pictures of them in the dressing room because…it wasn’t pretty. And neither wanted to stay in the dress long enough to be photographed! Needless to say, it was about the right length on Cinnamaid K, and uncomfortably short on Cinnamaid A. The cute little pleat at the neck made the top bag weirdly on each of them. And, there’s something a little odd going on the straps—I’d expect the outside of the strap to be straight up and over the shoulder, but they taper towards the neck a bit. I wouldn’t say it was ‘weird’ but the lines of the garment over the shoulder were not what I generally expect from a dress. It sounded so perfect for us on paper (and in model-less photos) but in reality, it definitely wasn’t meant to be. I was so set on it when we went into the store, but it was easy to leave it behind once each girl came out of the dressing room to an overwhelming “eh…”

The Cinnamaids got out of their matching dresses pretty fast, and we browsed around the rest of store. I hadn’t realised that I would be introducing them both to Anthro that day! Our store is only a couple months old, but I’ve been stalking the website for so long I forget other people don’t know about it.

I have found a new love since the disappointment with the Take Action dress, though:

We Took Action… : wedding calgary dress 11

The Painted Roses Dress by Amanda Archer. It comes in all sorts of colours (samples are on their way to me right now!) and better yet, it is custom made. As in, one can be 6″ shorter than the other!

Did you have your heart set on something, only to find it in no way suited your bridal party? Was it easy to move on?

That dress is gorgeous. I love it. Can’t wait to see it in action on Cinnamaids. I even love the green. It’d go with another blogging bee’s shoes.

That new dress is just perfectly lovely. And it will be flattering on all kinds of different shapes because of the way it’s cut.

I’ve often had this problem with Anthro dresses! For some reason, they never look right on me. I chalk it up to not being willowy. :P

Is Amanda Archer sending you samples of the dress to try, or just swatches of the colours? I looked at her dresses on etsy but my girls are nervous about ordering something sight unseen.

So weird! I actually found my bridesmaids dresses on Amanda Archer’s website! I’d never even heard of her, but saw one of her dresses on another blog. I’m so excited to order them…got my swatch in the mail and it’s even more beautiful than the picture online. I’m kinda nervous about not being able to see the dress in person, but since they are custom made my girls shouldn’t have to get alterations (hence saving money)!

When I took my MOH shopping first we found a great dress that looked perfect on her. Trouble was it didn’t look so great on the other girls. To make everyone happy I let them each choose their own style in the same color/material by the same designer. It worked out perfectly. I am a bit nervous for my friend’s wedding though, I am a BM in hers and not so sure about the dress working for me. We will see when it comes in in a few days.

Ooooooh I want to see that second dress on someone! I can’t wait. I also think it’s hilarious that you don’t have pictures to show us of the first dress because they didn’t want to stay in it. I’ve so been there before… in something so awful you can barely even zip it up because you already know it’s a disaster.

Anywayyyyyy, I think that the green dress is going to be out of this world on your gals.

@mightywombat: The funny thing is, I’d say A is willowy! Maybe she has more “up top” than most Anthro models though? I’d say it would fit nicer on people with smaller chests, but it bagged weirdly on me too. Yes, I went back later and tried it on for a day-after-brunch dress. :)
@s_lee_p: No, just colour swatches. Wouldn’t that be awesome to get sample dresses to try on though?!

YES! I loved a bridesmaid dress online but in person it looked a little yucky. I wanted short and they all ended up picking a long dress. At the end of the day, I want them to be comfortable and happy!

Too bad about the original dress, but I’m loving the new option!
