Mrs. Meerkat, Kalamazoo, MI/Riviera Maya Age and Occupation: 30, Application Engineer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, IT Consultant Engagement Date: July 26, 2008 Wedding Date: December 2010 Venue: Al Cielo / La Laguna About Me: I’m a tech-savvy tomboy with an affinity for hot tea and good sushi. Us Meerkats are just a couple fun lovin’ geeks from Michigan. We love anything having to do with movies, books, video games or technology and we hold a special place in our hearts for our two very spoiled shih-tzus, Wicket and Bravo. We also LOVE to travel. We love it so much it only took us 12 hours after we got engaged to decide to have a destination wedding. We are working our little Meerkat tails off planning a rustic-chic, travel themed destination wedding in the Riviera Maya with a semi-formal, vintage-turned-modern, outdoor at home reception back here in Michigan.
About Mrs. Meerkat

I Need Your Help Hive!

February 18th, 2011 @ 8:16 am by Mrs. Meerkat

I am ashamed. For the last few weeks I have been doing the newlywed relaxation thing and our at home reception has snuck up on me. It is three months away…EEEPPP! How did this happen? It seems like we just got home from the wedding. I have not done a single thing. So now I have to double-time all the planning. I have exactly four weeks to design, print, assemble and mail 120 invitations. *gulp*

Hive, I could sure use your help with designing our invitations.

Our theme for the at home reception is simply “Our Story.” Very colorful, whimsical yet chic decor (ala Scissors) with signs and photos EVERYWHERE telling why the different things at the reception are important to us or why we love them. Everything at the reception, from the food to the favors, will have some kind of significance. More to come on this in a later post, I promise.

So, my idea for the invitations is to create a little “book” that tells our story. I would love to do something that looks like this on the outside, but with bakers twine instead of raffia:

Or like this:

Then for the inside pages it would tell about how we met, got engaged…well, you get the idea. I have put together a VERY primitive version of what I would like the page to look like. Here is what I have so far:

As you can see it is missing A LOT of… well something. Hive, here is where I need your help! I have no idea what to write or even if the design looks good. I already had a friend tell me she didn’t like the typewriter key heading font, so I know there are things I can improve.

What are your thoughts? Do you like the design? If you were a guest, what kind of things would you want to read about? I would love to hear what things you would change if this was your invitation! :P

I think as a guest I would like to know more about the two of you as kids and now, for example hobbies, what your jobs are, your goals, etc. Even though sometimes it feels like everyone already knows these details, there will be people from Mr. Meerkat’s side that want to know more about you and people from your side that want to know more about him. Hope that helps.

I like the idea of the facing pages being you/him. It gives more perspective of how each of you is different, then can lead into pages of how you two have progressed into an US.

I like the idea of putting in more interests and facts about you when you were small and when you met. If you don’t want to add in that much text, you can always fill the space with cute pictures from the past, everybody likes pictures! They look awesome so far, I can’t wait to see how they turn out!

Love the story book idea! It would be cool for guests from your side to learn more about Mr. Meerkat and the other way around. Can’t wait to see how it turns out!

I agree with your friend about not loving the typewriter font. It seems too bright and modern compared to the more rustic, vintage-y covers you picked out. Maybe use a non-button typewriter font, like “Bohemian Typewriter”? Or if you’re okay moving away from typewriters, I think a distressed font would work well (”Inked God”, “You are Loved”, “A Font with Serifs”)? Or you could match the font on the first booklet. I’m not sure exactly what it is (maybe other hive members do?) but “Origins” by Umbrella Type looks similar. All these fonts are free except for Origins.

Good luck, and what a great concept!

@discgirl & @SqueakySquirrel: Exactly! A good number of our guests are from out of town so they will not have met one of us. :-P

@sparks: I like the idea of going more pictures than text for the wedding page. I mean I have all those cool wedding pictures I need to put to good use. hehe

@toshella: Yea I agree. I totally am ditching that font. No one has liked it, including me after I looked at it again. I did find one I really liked called Chocolate Dulce that I am trying (mainly because I already have it). :-P

My first suggestion is to pick a really fun paper to print these on, or add a texture to the background. Something like a wood grain or grass, or even a cement/pavement?

My next would be to add in some “scrapbooky” elements to each page with your photos. Like, an icon of your school mascot, and maybe like, a baseball hat or something tomboy-ish for you, and a gaming console for him? Just little touches that would add to the photos to really give it a personal touch. I loooooove this concept! They’re going to look great!

I’m no good with actual design, but I just want to say that the concept is adorable. I can’t wait to see what you come up with! :)

@amariem25: Don’t worry these are not even close to having the right text in them. I was just trying to get a basic design down as a start… :-P

I love this idea! Mrs. Sand Dollar is onto something with her suggestion to make it more “scrapbooky”. I can’t wait to see how they come together.

Love the idea of a storybook, and also love SD’s idea of having it on textured paper. Can’t wait to see how they turn out!
