(In the voice of Stefan from SNL) You know…it’s that thing where, like, you basically invented it and then everyone else does it, so you hate it…?
abandonwagon
-verb
Whereby one abandons an item or idea because the bandwagon is so full that you would all would totally die of starvation in a game of Oregon Trail.
There are a couple wedding things that I seriously thought I came up with myself. Maybe I’m naive, maybe I have way fewer original thoughts than I suspect, I don’t know. What I do know is when I see them on any number of wedding blogs, I’m like NO, I HATE IT NOW. Or at the very least, NO IT’S MINE. (Like Panther’s thing with seeing her wedding dress on other brides.)
Well.
One of the things I thought I invented was mismatched but complementary groomsmen ties. This was almost three years ago, and I was like—YES, I am a genius. How has no one else thought of this?! Well, of course they had.
But, instead of wanting to abandonwagon the idea, I just felt pleased that there is photographic proof of how awesome it will look. Besides, we had already started buying ties, so it was a done deal, as pictured below:
(Sidebar: PDog can’t decide if he wants to wear a slate blue tie and stand out more or wear a black tie with a bold white stripe. For reference, he’s wear a good old-fashioned black suit, with a pinstripe so slight that you can’t really see unless you’re up close. What do you think?)
Anyway, as much as I endorse creative thinking, there’s nothing wrong with piggybacking off of other people’s ideas and making it your own. That’s why it’s called inspiration. No need to abandonwagon if it’s really what you wanted in the first place.
I’ve been actively trying to stop worrying what other people are doing and just do what I want—forget trendiness or who thought of it or who else will use it in the future. And what do you know…this past weekend, two of my favorite bands—each responsible for my bar-none, most played and adored albums of 2009 and 2010—got some Grammy attention, together. Instead of rolling my eyes and abandonwagoning them, I’m just glad that such great music is getting some credit. That’s called personal evolution, people.
What about you? Have you wanted to bail on any ideas because they’ve become so pervasive?
