Abandonwagon

February 18th, 2011 @ 11:10 am by Mrs. Prairie Dog

(In the voice of Stefan from SNL) You know…it’s that thing where, like, you basically invented it and then everyone else does it, so you hate it…?

abandonwagon

-verb

Whereby one abandons an item or idea because the bandwagon is so full that you would all would totally die of starvation in a game of Oregon Trail.

There are a couple wedding things that I seriously thought I came up with myself. Maybe I’m naive, maybe I have way fewer original thoughts than I suspect, I don’t know. What I do know is when I see them on any number of wedding blogs, I’m like NO, I HATE IT NOW. Or at the very least, NO IT’S MINE. (Like Panther’s thing with seeing her wedding dress on other brides.)

Well.

One of the things I thought I invented was mismatched but complementary groomsmen ties. This was almost three years ago, and I was like—YES, I am a genius. How has no one else thought of this?! Well, of course they had.

But, instead of wanting to abandonwagon the idea, I just felt pleased that there is photographic proof of how awesome it will look. Besides, we had already started buying ties, so it was a done deal, as pictured below:

Abandonwagon : wedding cincinnati menswear Ties02 ties+02

(Sidebar: PDog can’t decide if he wants to wear a slate blue tie and stand out more or wear a black tie with a bold white stripe. For reference, he’s wear a good old-fashioned black suit, with a pinstripe so slight that you can’t really see unless you’re up close. What do you think?)

Anyway, as much as I endorse creative thinking, there’s nothing wrong with piggybacking off of other people’s ideas and making it your own. That’s why it’s called inspiration. No need to abandonwagon if it’s really what you wanted in the first place.

I’ve been actively trying to stop worrying what other people are doing and just do what I want—forget trendiness or who thought of it or who else will use it in the future. And what do you know…this past weekend, two of my favorite bands—each responsible for my bar-none, most played and adored albums of 2009 and 2010—got some Grammy attention, together. Instead of rolling my eyes and abandonwagoning them, I’m just glad that such great music is getting some credit. That’s called personal evolution, people.

What about you? Have you wanted to bail on any ideas because they’ve become so pervasive?

I have nothing to say on the matter except that…I love Stephan.

I think he should wear the blue slate, and everyone else where one with black in it, he’s guaranteed to stand out then- OR you can make his boutinerre extra special-or with white in it whereas all the other groomsmen don’t have white in their at all…BTW I don’t think you are jumping on the bandwagon…

Honestly, there was not a new idea in my wedding. We stole everything (thanks WeddingBee). Well, maybe the themed rehearsal, but everything else was stolen. You know what? No one had seen Converse on the groom and groomsmen who came to our wedding. How crazy is that? It’s everywhere on the blogs, but in real life, no one had seen it. Just proves sometimes it just seems things are overdone.

would those bands be Mumfords and Avett Bros?? love them :)

but back to the topic at hand, i agree that it’s hard to keep yourself from being disenchanted with a good idea when you start to see it all the time. i had the same problem! but instead of comparing how often you see it online, ask yourself how often you’ve seen in IN PERSON. because most likely you haven’t seen it in person yet, so most likely neither have your guests. if it’s a good idea and you love it, stick with it! :)

Awesome post :). I’m totally okay with band wagoning, lol. Most weddings in my family/friends are all very standard/traditional, so every time I jump on a bandwagon, I’m taking a step away from most of the weddings I’ve seen.

I totally went through this too, but honestly, unless all of our guests are weddingbee readers, or similar audiences, chances are, it will be totally new for your guests and they will love it! (And think you’re so creative and unique to boot!)

I think the blue slate tie really stands out against the black.
Also, I think ideas that fit the personalities of the people getting married are far more important than being original. I like your tie idea, and I think your guys will look great!

I feel the same way as you about wanting to abandon the idea once you feel like it is not your own, but I learned that that is not always the right thing to do. I bought a dress because it was different–there was a trunk show and nobody in the area would have this dress or make the changes to it that I wanted in order for it to look how I dreamed my wedding dress would look like. I had told my consultant that I wanted something unique, that nobody else would have. She and my family that came along loved this particular dress–they said they had never seen one like this before, but I felt deep down it wasn’t what I was looking for. I had tried on one that I fell in love with, but was told that so many ppl had already purchased it, so we kind of just let it go. Well, 3 days after purchasing the “unique” dress I realized it was not the one for me–not the right cut, too much embellishment, and not my dream dress. So we cancelled the order, I went back and bought my dream dress, which was almost exactly like the one she said everyone had. At that point I didn’t care. I, personally, had never seen it on a bride, and I made a change or two to make it mine and I am STILL happy with my decision. Bandwagon, schmandwagon!

Totally agree with what you wrote and I heart you for the Stefan reference. That and the Miley Cyrus skit make SNL for me!

Okay, firstly, I vote blue!

And secondly, I am sooo happy I’m not the only one out there who seriously thought all these ides were her own. I think I just think too highly of myself ;-). I just have to keep reminding myself that I like these things for a reason and shouldn’t give them up just because other people like them too.

Unless we’re talking about the time my mom starting referring to Mr. G’s & my song as “her song”. That did ruin it a little bit for me ;-).

I think the blue tie is far and away the best choice for PDog! :)

I am such an abandonwagoner, I think it’s almost a compulsion. I did have cupcakes and a photobooth at our wedding, though, so I will accept some trends, apparently.

Slate blue, def.

You are so spot-on with this post! I am in the same boat - we’re having a casual rustic farm/antique vintage wedding. I thought it would be so cool to show off my family’s antiques and nick-nacks…but this has been done to DEATH latley! We thought of using my grandfather’s typewriter that he used in lawschool for our guest book - OVER DONE. Burlap and twine accents - SEEN IT A MILLION TIMES OVER. Mason jars filled with mis-matched buttons, beads, feathers, etc. - NOTHING NEW ABOUT THAT IDEA!

But I finally figured that 1.) I have literally reviewed hundreds of real weddings on the blogs latley and maybe everyone else in the world hasn’t seen these things as much as I have, and 2.) these things are really important to us - we didn’t go buy them to keep within a trend, and I want to use them darnit!

So don’t be surprised when you see my totally stereotypical farm/vintage wedding in August!

I also like the slate blue tie! And, I’m impressed that you managed to seamlessly tie a Stefan reference in with the Oregon Trail. ;)
