About Mrs. Panther

All Those Mocha Lattes, You Gotta Do Pilates : wedding atlanta fitness 14 1

I wonder if I should try Kanye’s Workout Plan.

I’ve been fairly active my whole life, but I go through some periods that are better than others. When I was 13, I started joining my parents at the gym. Just like them, I did a half hour of cardio and a half hour of weights. Ah, if only I’d kept that up.

I continued visiting the gym throughout high school, but when I got to college, I very quickly learned that the Freshman 15 was not a myth. I was too busy partying and eating pizza for every meal to exercise, and before I knew it, I was the heaviest I’d ever been.

The summer after my freshman year, I went on WeightWatchers, and I’ve been on ever since. I’m not naturally overweight or anything, but I have the appetite of a linebacker. I’m not kidding. Challenge me to an eating contest. I will win. I could eat all day long—I can’t remember ever being full for more than 10 minutes. I love eating and food more than anything else in the world (except maybe animals), and now that I’m not a teenager anymore, it can get me into trouble.

Hello, lover.

Because I’m such a pig and because I get really, REALLY mean and miserable when I’m hungry, dieting alone has never been very successful for me. So, when it’s time to buckle down, I work out. I suck at sports, but I generally like generic gym-type activities and group fitness classes. That is, once I’m in the middle of doing them. I hate getting up early or getting my ass in gear after work. I just want to sit and eat! It takes a lot of motivation to get me going.

Once we started planning the wedding, I had a burst of motivation. I was keeping up with WeightWatchers, doing 30 Day Shred three or four times a week and running on the treadmill almost every other day. By the time our engagement photos rolled around, I was feeling pretty good.

Raw Photo Design

I wasn’t in the best shape of my life or anything, but I had my body under control, and that made me feel good. Unfortunately, once our engagement photos were done, I let myself take just a little, itty-bitty break from dieting and exercise. That break ended up lasting six months. WHOOPS!

Now, somehow, I’m almost back to my Freshman 15 weight. That is not good. My body doesn’t respond as quickly to diet and exercise as it did when I was 18, and now, I have much less free time to spend at the gym. It’s going to be a slow process getting myself back to where I need to be for the wedding. See, I ordered my dress before our engagement photos…when I was a solid 10 pounds lighter. I think I can probably still squeeze into my dress, but it won’t be pretty. And I’m running out of time! I’ve got a plan—I just really hope it works.

Step One: Stick to WeightWatchers, FOR REAL. As some of you may know, WeightWatchers recently switched to a new points system. Carbs and protein are now counted, and calories aren’t. I don’t know what was behind the decision to do this, and I’m sure they have great reasons, but I don’t like it. The old WeightWatchers worked for me. The new system doesn’t. I’ve been sticking to it since after New Year’s, and I haven’t lost a single pound. But I think I’ve found a way to help. Which brings us to …

Step Two: Kick my workout routine into overdrive. A few weeks ago, I got an email with a LivingSocial deal for one month of fitness classes at a local gym for $20. I bought it right away, and since then, I’ve been taking group fitness classes at least three times a week. Now don’t get me wrong, I love 30 Day Shred, but nothing beats a serious hour-long class at the gym. I’m still not losing weight, but I can see a difference in my body, and my new scale says my body fat percentage is going down. Woohoo!

I loved Miss Hippo’s workout calendar idea, and immediately made one for myself. Unfortunately, my Scotch tape is missing (I THINK it’s with my table number stuff, but I’m not sure), so instead of being taped to the refrigerator, my poor calendar has been sitting on the kitchen counter getting covered in food.

I’m not doing anywhere near as well as Miss Hippo, but I’m working on it! You like the oil splatters and tomato sauce in the corner? I’m so classy. I don’t know why I tried writing down what I did if I wasn’t going to use a consistent notation system. In case you’re wondering, “cardio” probably means I went on the treadmill and elliptical at the gym, “class” means I took a class (duh—in this case, it was an hour-long “high-intensity interval-training workout”), “bodycombat” and “combat” both refer to a martial-arts style Les Mills class, “spark” is the same interval-training class, and “30 D.S.” is 30 Day Shred. Good job, me.

Unfortunately, Mr. Panther’s calendar is a little more empty …

… But luckily for him, he’s a dude, and all he has to do is eat a little less Chick-Fil-A and he loses 20 pounds. I frigging hate that.

What methods are you guys using to slim down before the wedding? Anyone else take group fitness classes? What’s your favorite?

Oh man, I’m not the girl to ask this. I run 6-8 miles a day (though the past two weeks I’ve been flu ridden) and am too scared to go to fitness classes because I’m only in running shape. I almost died at a Spinning class once. Seriously, I was afraid they’d have to bring out the AED.

I just wanted to mention that I love Kanye’s Workout Plan. Sophomore year of college, it was my go to song in the middle of my run when I was about to keel over. And now it’s stuck in my head :).

eat salad all week, then cave and stuff my face with fries…or ice cream…or both. SHAME. repeat.

kidding! i’ve been doing dailey method 2x a week, which is a ballet barre pilates class that makes your body feel like jello after. i need to eat healthier and add a few more classes too, i think!

I’m the exact same! - LOVE food so I choose working out over dieting. It usually does the trick too, so me likey. I’m terrible at running, so I’m a gym rat by nature - relying on intervals, variety, and a good mix of cardio and strength to torch the calories. I’m actually training to be a group fitness instructor so I love those too - Step is my fav :) Good luck!! You’re definitely on track with the HIIT workouts!

@Miss Biscuit: Biscuit, I am so jealous of people who run for fun. You must have amazing legs! I bet you’d do fine in group fitness classes. Most of it’s about endurance. Spinning just sucks! Sorry about getting Kanye stuck in your head. ;-)
@Miss Ostrich: Mmmmm, fries. That class sounds awesome! Is that a common class or just something offered exclusively near you?
@mclove: Ooh, that’s so cool that you’re going to be an instructor! I used to love Step back in college, but I’m afraid to try it now — I don’t know if I’ve built up enough endurance yet! What’s HIIT?

I’ve stepped up the # of Zumba classes I attend and since I didn’t do well during the first half of our month long weight loss challenge at the studio, my trainer challenged me to NO CARBS for the last 2 weeks :( I plan to add them back in afterwards but to limit how much I eat which is hard bc pasta and bread are 2 of my favorite things. Good luck Panther!

I started working out…yesterday. I just decided enough was enough and did what I thought was going to be a lame, way-too-easy workout video on Netflix….and I almost died.
I also want to say that you are a terrible person for that pizza picture.
And lastly, I wanted to tell you that my FSIL’s daughter’s names are Bella and Josie. Hilarious.

@Lo: Oooh, how do you like Zumba? I’ve heard good things! Wow, good luck on the no carbs thing — that sounds so hard! I’m thinking about trying Atkins for the last month or two before the wedding, just to knock off a few extra pounds. Let me know how it goes!

@katiedee: First of all, NO WAY! Bella and Josie?? What are the odds? That’s so cool!
What video did you do on Netflix? I wanna try!

I spin 4 days a week and LOVE it. Well, I love it after class (during I’m usually cursing the instructor who seems to do hill sprints without losing her breath).

And then I tried a cardio lifting class and almost died. Awful. I need to get to the weight room-my aerobic ability is pretty strong, but I struggled with a 5 lb weight.

I’m a lifetime WWer, too. It makes me feel so much better to see that skinny people like you have to work for it, too. I know that may sound awful, but it is actually encouraging for me. I have never been “skinny,” even when I was my goal weight.
I gained about 20# while falling in love with FI, so I went back to meetings the second week of January. I’ve been following the new plan and I like it okay, but I’ve only lost 3# in about 5 weeks, which is mad frustrating….BUT, I’ve lost a lot of inches. I can wear jeans I couldn’t wear when I weighed 5-10# less than I do now! I run 3 times a week, do cardio kickboxing class at the Y 2X/week and do water aerobics/swim a few laps once/week.

I love group fitness classes! My weight went crazy when I started grad school, and I initially tried to get healthier by running only to discover that I hate running. ;)

Now I take Power Sculpt, which is a combination of step aerobics and weights, as well as Ballet and Pure Barre (it sounds exactly like the ballet barre pilates class that Ostrich is doing). I recently added Spinning, which I really like because it doesn’t require a whole lot of thinking and you get to listen to motivating music.

I am with you - I have decided I hate the new Weight Watchers. The old one was great; the new way… not losing at all, just maintaining. I think I have to go shopping for a new eating plan. It’s really frustrating because I feel like the old WW was so, so healthy, and good for you - it wasn’t a diet, more like “how to eat healthfully”. The new way doesn’t really work (for me, anyway). Sad panda.

Starting Saturday, I am going hard core on my work outs too. With the help of a trainer and 30 day shred. I have 7 weeks to go before the wedding and I wanna look amazing in my dress and feel good. Good for you Miss Panther!

Oh by the way give us the deets on those shoes….please. They are A M A Z I N G!!!!!

@katiedee: Hand to the bible! Well, Airebella and Josette (really?), but Bella and Josie to normal people.
I did the 10-Minute Solution Carb Burner, but I did three segments. The selection on Watch Instantly is pretty cheesy and lame, but it gets the job done. I think I’m gonna try the Kickbox Bootcamp today! =)

I feel like I could have written this post myself. My love affair with food is almost as passionate as my love affair with my future husband. Okay, who am I kidding, it’s probably more passionate. I love, love, love Weight Watchers, but have been having the hardest time sticking to anything. This post is great motivation to get my tush in gear :)

@Miss Panther: I think they have versions of Dailey Method in all major cities. In NYC it’s called Physique 57. You should definitely try it!

If you liked the total calories plan with WW better, maybe try a calorie counting site like SparkPeople or MyFitnessPal? It’s kind of a pain because you have to input everything you eat, but they also have a huge database so you can always find close, if not exact, matches. Plus they’re both free. I’ve known lots of people who use them to supplement their WW meal plans.
Good luck! I’m letting myself take a small break post-engagement (I’d lost nearly 10lbs before we got engaged), but I think I’ve gained 3 of those back already so I need to get back on board….

@lolo7835: Spinning scares me!
@missrobots: Sounds like you must be in amazing shape! If it makes you feel any better, I would definitely not be “skinny” (I still wouldn’t call myself that!) if I wasn’t on WeightWatchers — I hate people who don’t have to work to look good! So not fair!
@Miss Tartlet: I like the sound of Power Sculpt! That’s my kind of class. :) And boo, running sucks!
