Mrs. Pancakes's Picture
Mrs. Pancakes, New York/Costa Rica Age and Occupation: 26, Law School Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Latin American Policy Analyst Engagement Date: March 12, 2010 Wedding Date: May 2011 Venue: Casa Punto de Vista About Me: I’m a perfectionist with a big heart. I love a good laugh and firmly believe no one has ever regretted being prepared! My motto is “go big or go home.” I am incapable of doing anything in moderation, especially when it comes to shopping, TV, food and travel, and some would say wedding planning! The other half of this nearlywed team is a laid-back, adventure-loving, accident prone, sweetie from LA. He makes me laugh, is always down for an impromptu dance party, and totally indulges most of my hare-brained schemes. Now, in my final year of law school, we’ll be spending the spring abroad in Amsterdam and planning a DIY, whimsical, detail-filled destination wedding in Costa Rica!
About Mrs. Pancakes

I first noticed these fabulous striped straws when I entered Southern Weddings Magazine’s MMInk calligraphy contest. (BTW how much do you love Moya from MM Ink?)

Then I started to notice that they are everywhere…which was inevitably followed by this ache in my stomach for paper straws (which I didn’t even know was a thing two weeks ago!). It’s embarrassing but true. I am such a sucker for cute details. I mean, LOOK:

So here’s the deal on these darling details. As far as I can tell, they come in a few colors: red, green, hot pink, blue, and gray. You can get them from Kikkerland, and they come in boxes of 50 for $3 or 144 for $7. Shipping and handling is $10 because Kikkerland is in the UK.

Art Fire also has them in packs of 100 for $16.

There are also a number of sellers on Etsy and eBay who sell these straws, but they all seem to be fairly pricey. All the Etsy sellers I could find seem to sell them with the flags included, so they are about $25 for 20!

While it seems like most people like to decorate the actual paper straws, I love this mix-and-match idea. How adorable are these stirrers??

The further along I get in the planning process, the more I realize that one of the best and worst things about a small wedding is that I am convinced that I can add/afford anything and everything…sigh.

Update: I told my sister about my obsession with these straws, and then she sent me this email:

How fabulous is my sister!? I am now the proud owner of 100 pink and white paper straws. I heart my sister. :D

Has anyone gotten these straws? Did you find any good deals? What other wedding details have you fallen in love with that you didn’t even know existed?

We had papers straws at our wedding. I loved them. We left them in jars at the bars and guests could use them in the cocktails in they wanted to. We bought a few different colors from etsy for a low price.

How random!! I just got my package from “Bake it Pretty” of paper straws. Like you I just HAD to have them!!! So cute!! 144 for $6.50 with pretty cheap shipping too (best deal I found when I was searching online for them!!)

I love this detail. Has anyone tried these though? I am worried that paper straws would just get soggy and you wouldn’t actually be able to use them? Please let me know if anyone has tried them.

We LOVED our paper straws! We had red/white, magenta/white, and blue/white!

I found that if you ordered the classic red/white ones from a restaurant supply you could get a ton (like 500) for ten buck.

Then we indulged in the “special” pink/blue ones on etsy. They weren’t crazy expensive though and the vendor has tons of cute straws:

As far as them getting soggy- they eventually did, and our guests just tossed ‘em and grabbed a new one.

AND I’m SO glad you got pink/white- they were my favorite!

P, you and I need to get together over a margarita someday–I have those exact. same. straws! I am SO excited to see everything come together for your wedding!

@Sarah: The true vintage paper straws can get soggy, but I *think* the modern throwbacks are coated so they don’t degrade. Now I’m going to break one out to test this…

I ordered gray/white , green/white and purple/white from http://www.thesugardiva.com/ (The same woman that sells on artfire) that way I could get the bulk discount, despite wanting a mix of colors. I just mentioned the quantity I wanted in the comments section.

They were thicker than I anticipated, which I’m sure means they’ll hold up a little better. I haven’t tested them out though.

my very first wedding purchase (after my dress) were these adorable guys! i bought 3 boxes of them, and my fiance tested them out, they were perfect! and sat in his cup for several hours without getting ‘soggy’! I bought mine at http://www.modernlola.com box of 144 straws for $6.25 with shipping at $9.99, but after buying 3 boxes it evened out to the cheapest deal per straw i could find online!! hope you enjoy yours and much as i’m enjoying mine!!!
