Shoe Kismet

February 22nd, 2011 @ 3:55 pm by Mrs. Pain au Chocolat

Aside from keeping my feet happy and having some style, I don’t have too many requirements for my shoes. Why would my wedding shoes be any different? I am not one to suffer for fashion. My high arches turn even sneakers into torture after a while. While I love my stilettos, they are not comfortable for all-day wear, especially when showing house after house or trekking across lawns. My favorite shoes are kitten heels and flats. They’re my go-to styles for sophisticated comfort that lasts all day. (I sound like an orthopedic-shoe ad…)

Penguins!

Before I even found my dress, I knew I’d wear flats. For so many reasons.

  1. Every gown was the perfect length—no hemming required. If I wore heels, I’d have to order (i.e., pay for) extra length. Less alterations = less money = happy.
  2. Comfort is king. The reception is five hours with three additional hours on each side of it. I do not want to nurse sore tootsies in the middle of our reception.
  3. I’m tall. Taller than Mr. P (shhh!) by about half an inch. With heels, I’m over six feet tall. Neither of us cares about the height difference. In fact, Mr. P finds it sexy. And I love that he enjoys when I wear heels. I just don’t want to tower over him in our wedding photos.
  4. Practicality. The “I dos” will be outside. On grass, flagstone paths, and patios.
  5. I’m clumsy. Seriously, I trip up the stairs. It takes great concentration not to face-plant some days. Let’s not add heels and a long dress to the mix.
  6. Comfort, because I’m stubborn.

Still, I found myself lusting after impractical footwear!

Oh, Camille!

And then I saw these online. Instantly smitten!

Seychelles

Flats with personality and in a beautiful, neutral metallic with plenty of wear-again potential!? And!! The best part: they fit the style of my dress. I tracked them down, only to discover they were more than I wanted to spend. Yes, I know $80 is a pittance in wedding-shoe world. But it’s still a lot of money.

Several months later, when the shoes were a distant memory, I had my shoe-kismet moment. A friend and I were on the prowl at DSW, scouring the aisles. I wasn’t sure what I was looking for, but leather boots and flats with some support (near impossible, BTW) seemed like a good goal. As usual, the shoes I liked were gone in my giant, bug-squishing shoe size 10. So it was back to the clearance racks where the garish, hooker-ish, or otherwise odd shoes live. I think I let out a yelp when I slid open the Seychelles box to find my flats! In my size and color! Sixty percent off. Shoe serendipity!

So, until it’s time to break them in, they’ll stay tucked away just out of reach in my closet. (If you see me wearing them out, please scold me before I scuff them.)

I love a good shopping story! Please tell me how you found your wedding shoes. Did you have an odd assortment of criteria, too?

I have super high arches too but am only 5′4 so I know I want to wear heels. I fell in love with a pair before I even had a dress and have maybe 3.5-4″ heels with a slight platform. I am going to take them to a cobbler (can you believe there are still cobblers?) to see if I can find the perfect insole to help my poor arches

I have those Seychelles! I got mine for a steal at Nordstrom Rack. They are SO comfortable. I’m really excited that you found exactly what you were looking for!

Can I tell you a secret? I totally already noticed that you’re a smidge taller. ;) It’s because Mr. Lox and I are the exact same height, in theory. In practice I feel like I might be a smidge taller than him. Anyway, it’s no biggie, but it does mean I went for wedding flats. Join the club! :)

My wedding shoes were actually the very first wedding purchase I made. I found them while just browsing one day on the Nordstrom website - beautiful champagne slingbacks with a bow on the toe. I hadn’t even been dress shopping yet so was hesitant to buy. I sent the link to my mom who agreed they were perfect and that I should just buy them, especially since Nordstrom has a great return policy if they didn’t work out. In the 30 minutes it took for this conversation to take place, the website ran out of my size. I called my local store only to find out that they never even received them in the champagne color. The salesman offered to search other stores though for me and call me back. Several hours later he called back to inform me that there was only one pair left in my size in all of Nordstrom in the entire country. It was fate. They were perfect with the dress I did end up buying, and I love them just as much to this day.

I have those Seychelles and wore them so many times last summer that they are now all scuffed up looking. So comfy though!

I wanted those same shoes! I ordered them, though, and all the sizes fit weird. I ended up getting a similar Seychelles style that I liked just as much, but I won’t say I don’t envy you just a bit - they’re so cute!

I’m 6′2” to begin with so I can understand the height thing. I was pretty set on flats, but then I found these gems http://www.etsy.com/listing/64562280/royal-blue-peacock-pumps-with-lower-heel and lusted over them forever. I thought, “nah, I’ll just find something else.” Then, my amazing sister bought them for my for my birthday as a surprise! How sweet, now I just have to wait a year to wear them. It feels like a little bit of torture but it’s soooo worth it!

I wore those same shoes except in yellow! I would definitely break them in though unless you want to end up with black feet by the end of the reception because they hurt your toes…not that that happened to me or anything.

I’m a flats girl too, and a tad taller than the mister! We’re also going to be in grass for our ceremony :) Those flats you found are too cute!

Dude, $80 is nothing to shake a stick at. I am the cheapest person ever when it comes to shoes. Even my running shoes, because no matter how much they cost they wear out in 3-4 months.

What wonderful luck! I love your shoes! I was obsessed with finding the perfect shoes for months and would order pair after pair, only to be unhappy because I was always taller than my fiance. Then one random day we were walking through Macy’s and the fiance pointed out shoes he liked for me (which is incredibly odd) and they happened to be 40% and less than half the price of my other shoes I had ordered. I took that as a sign and gave up on trying to be shorter than him!
