About Mrs. Meerkat

A VERY VERY Budget At Home Reception

February 23rd, 2011 @ 8:13 am by Mrs. Meerkat

So here’s the thing. We have about $4,000 to spend on our at home reception. Out of that $4,000 we have to purchase food for the 200 people we are inviting, pay for rentals (tent, tables, chairs, etc.) and still have enough money to decorate the Meerkat In-Laws’ backyard with. *deep breath*

I am hoping that we can pull off a bright colored, whimsical-chic, backyard, love story themed shindig. Here is kind of the idea we are going for:

sources: 1, 2

Yeah, the budget is going to be tight but I know we can do this if we are smart about how we spend the money. The bad part is that I have high standards and I want everything to feel/look luxe even if it’s not.

On top of the budget constraint I am struggling with the fact that our reception doesn’t really have a theme outside of “our love story.”  While I am going to tie together all the food, favors and photos into the “our love story” theme, we are still going to need bold, colorful, cost effective, visual elements that tie the whole party together.

Here is what we have so far. Beside using our big pink heart above as a design element I think I would like to use chalkboards signs with colorful chalk.

Big, bright, tissue poms on the tables and around the yard:

I would also like to take the poms and do something like this in the roof of the clear tent we are getting:

Or maybe some of these mixed in:

I know the vision I have is still a bit raw but all the items are cost effective and have that colorful impact I am looking for. I really need to decide in the next couple weeks how we want to progress so that we can get projects started. *deep breath* I am trying not to panic.

Are these enough design elements to pull it all together? I would love to hear what you would add or take away if this was your very, very budget reception.

It can so be done! I planned my sister’s outdoor wedding on a budget of $5,000 and it was beautiful. I wish I had pictures, but my best advice is to seach craigslist. If you’re having a hard time with an idea you’d like to be cost effective let me know and I can normally come up with an alternative to meet any budget.

Good luck! We are having a destination wedding and are also currently trying to plan our back yard reception at home at my parents house. Prices so far have been ridiculous, but you give me hope!! Keep posting, I’m interested to see what you come up with :)

I’m so interested to see the final result- it definitely CAN be done! Along with the pomanders, another option could be hanging fabric or paper ribbons in bright colors, like this:

I have paper lanterns in bright pink, orange and white that I would be VERY happy to gift you if you want/need them. They don’t light up, but may add some more fun to your already fun decor. Cheers!

I’m on a similar budget and will be doing similar whimsical/personal touches for our event, but it’s being held at a local park because we couldn’t find a backyard big enough. The upside - the city forbids alcohol in the park since it’s their property, so we are saving a HUGE amount of cash on that alone. The rental costs are starting to scare me a bit (especially the tent) but if we can keep that to under a third, we should be fine.

Be sure to check out your local Price Club, Sam’s, or Costco for things like silverware and paper goods. Local grocery stores with a decent bakery can whip up a cake that is perfect if you don’t need/want fondant. Lots of DIY out there - and this board has been a huge inspiration!

You can totally pull this off, lady, and I know it’s going to be gorgeous! I think “Our Love Story,” + whismy, bright, and fun IS a theme! And a great one at that!!

You can do it! We have a similar budget, and a similarly-sized guest list. We’re asking close friends to set aside any strings of white lights or mason jars they can lend (I can’t resist the trend), and we’re also getting a tent (because I’m told it may actually dare to rain on my wedding day). We’ll be using tons of local flowers from both our garden and a woman who lives nearby and has glorious flowers and won’t charge much, and stringing up photos of family members and people in the wedding party. Very casual but pretty. Your ideas are all gorgeous, and totally reasonable for your budget. Can’t wait to see the end result!

I have complete confidence that you can do this! I totally agree with Brooch that you’ve already nailed a theme. I love the pom chandelier!

check out http://www.paperlanternstore.com/. I decided to go with paper lanterns instead of the tissue balls because of time and cost. I was surprised how CHEAP I could get these lanterns and how much a plain styrofoam ball was, not to mention all the time to make the tissue look just right! Just a thought :-)

I am doing a full backyard wedding for around $5000 including all the attire, decor, food, etc.

Do you belong to a church (or your parents, in-laws, etc.)? Then maybe you could borrow tables, chairs, etc. (or at least some vs. renting all) to decrease costs. Also, consider not having seating for everyone - it is going to be casual (bbq/buffet vs. formal meal).

Other cost savings - instead of buying chalkboards (more expensive) buy wood and paint with chalkboard paint - this can be done on buckets holding drinks too.

If you’re handy with a sewing machine, or know someone who is that can help, you can “make” your own linens. I went to Goodwill and yardsales to find neutral shade bed sheets. I’ve cut them in half and will be hemming the edges to make 16 table clothes for my picnic style reception. My “linens” so far have cost me $6 to make 6.
