Mrs. French Toast, Pleasanton, CA Age and Occupation: 29, Marketing & PR Fiance's Age and Occupation: IT geek by day, self-proclaimed handyman by night Engagement Date: October 2009 Wedding Date: March 2011 Venue: Palm Event Center About Me: I’m a city girl at heart who moved to the suburbs a year ago. Now I’m adjusting to life with a front lawn, nosy neighbors, cooking attempts, and making sure the garbage pail is pulled out on time every week! When I’m not traveling, Mr. FT and I enjoy marathon sessions of Law & Order: SVU, snowboarding, photography, spoiling our 3-year old yorkie-poodle Mokka and disagreeing over what music to listen to in the car. We’re planning a small winery wedding while incorporating some cultural elements into the day as a nod to our Chinese backgrounds.
About Mrs. French Toast

I always thought that we were going to order our wedding cake from a Chinese bakery. Since Mr. French Toast doesn’t have a sweet tooth, he didn’t mind where the cake came from or how it looked. Me? Put anything sweet in front of me and I’ll devour it.

If you haven’t tried a Chinese bakery cake before, then run, don’t walk to your nearest Sheng Kee, Ranch 99 market or any Chinese bakery.

Chinese cakes are fluffy and sponge-like, decked with light whipped cream and fresh fruit. In my family, the Chinese cake is a staple for any birthday or celebration because it’s just the right amount of sweetness paired with whipped cream and fresh fruit. Did I mention the price? A 3-tier wedding cake for 150 people runs about $200. That’s $1.33 per slice!

The only thing to keep in mind about Chinese wedding cakes is that they’re frosted with whipped cream, so it’s not ideal for an outdoor summer wedding and decorations are limited. But if you’re having an indoor wedding and want a simple yet delicious cake, I highly suggest that you consider a Chinese cake.

Of course, everything changed for us during one fine weekend when Mr. French Toast and I were strolling around Chestnut street in the Marina district of San Francisco. I stopped in my tracks when I spotted the cutest storefront ever. The inside is painted a minty green color and their cake display was just to die for. What can I say? I’m a sucker for pretty things.

For someone who hardly eats dessert, Mr. French Toast sure didn’t hold back when he took a bite of the red velvet, and another bite, then another bite… I finally had to nudge him and say, “Hey Mister, save some for me, aiight?” In fact, the Susiecakes staff saw how much we loved the red velvet that she boxed up another two cupcakes for us to take home and “share,” as she so sweetly put it.

A few weeks later I went back to order our cake, which will look something to the effect of this in white and pink. Our florist will add fresh flowers to it.

I can’t wait to take a bite out of it!

Ahh, I didn’t realize that is what type of cake is a Chinese cake :) I am Caucasian, but my aunt is Taiwanese, so we always had these types of cakes at family events growing up. Since I love whipped cream and fruit, it sounds like the perfect cake for me!

BUT, the place you found looks adorable, and your cake is darling!! I love the minty green :)

Oops, I meant “that type of cake,” not “that is what type of cake is” :) Ha

I suddenly have a craving for Chinese bakery taro cake. *drool*
For some reason Chinese bakeries make the fluffiest softest chiffon/sponge cakes, don’t they?

That’s what my sister did–she likes that kind of cake. I personally don’t care for the fluffy fruit filled cake with whipped cream.

My quest for wedding cake changed when I fell in love with a bakery that charges $7/slice for their traditional tiered wedding cakes! We decided to go with a cake buffet from them ($32 for 8″ round cakes). We still get the delicious taste, but at a seriously reduced price. And we’re getting one cake decorated like the traditional tiered cake would have been decorated, so I still get my pretty wedding cake.

We knew exactly where we wanted to go. Several of our friends had ordered cakes from a local bakery and they were so delicious. When we went in for our tasting, it only confirmed they were the right choice for us. Yum.

I love Chinese bakery cakes. So much. They’re deceptively light so I can eat a ton in one sitting. One of my favorite things about them is that they’re not overly sweet! And the fresh fruit fillings…oh, mango…

They look yummy! We don’t have any Chinese bakeries around me (not that I know of at least!) but we’re getting ours through our caterer. He actually uses pastry cream instead of butter cream or fondant so it’s lighter in taste and won’t melt outside.

I so agree Chinese cakes are delicious. Ever since I can remember my mom’s family (Mexican) has always bought birthday cakes at the Phoenix Bakery in Los Angeles.

We’re hoping to go with King’s Hawaiian in Torrance, CA, which makes cakes that are basically Chinese style, but with a few little Hawaiian touches, like haupia (coconut pudding) filling! Their guava chiffon is also quite yummy.
