I love all things design, sewing, flea markets, and a good book. I’ve been known to swoon over a well-designed chair and often find myself craving a new addition to my chair collection regardless of the lack square footage in our home. I’m Mexican American girl who hates all things spicy but loves her rowdy Mexican family and her Latin roots. My wedding muses may not be your typical wedding superstars, but with a lot of DIY, a dash of offbeat style, and lots of love and laughs, Mr. Cotton and I plan to create a day that is unmistakably us.

Day of the Dead Love

February 24th, 2011 @ 9:47 am by Mrs. Cotton Candy

Last October the mister and I, on a whim, found ourselves partaking in the Day of the Dead celebrations at Olvera Street in downtown L.A. For those who have never had the pleasure of spending some time at Olvera Street, I highly encourage you to go. The street is not really that large—maybe a city block—but it’s jam-packed with vendors and yummy restaurants.

The Day of the Dead celebration was out-of-control incredible. The mariachi bands playing were amazing and made me want to start revising our budget so we could afford to hire one, and all over the plaza there were these amazing alters dedicated to loved ones who have passed away.

One of them even had a faux cake that was topped off with one of the best Day of the Dead cake toppers I have ever seen.

I was hoping to find a similar topper while we were there, but unfortunately we were only able to find ones that look like this, and I’m not too sure that my Catholic mother would approve.

Although I was unable to find a cake topper, I didn’t come home empty handed. I purchased a print of a Javier Ramos Lucano painting called Juntos Hasta La Muerte (Till Death Do Us Part). It features a skeletal bride and groom in a traditional Day of the Dead scene, with cactus and flowers in the background.

Although the illustration doesn’t fit with the style and theme of our wedding, I would love to somehow incorporate it into our wedding. Any suggestions? I’m thinking maybe thank you cards.

i think your idea of using the painting on thank you cards, or something like that, is cool! maybe you could also display it at the rehearsal dinner?

i recently purchased a calavera from etsy–while day of the dead is not part of my culture, i very much respect and like the meaning and spirit behind the holiday. there is a section on etsy devoted to day of the dead items, you should browse through there to see if there’s anything you want!

OMG Love day of the dead! One of my bridal showers was actually themed around it.

I like the Thank You card idea. How about doing something with Moo Cards? You could put the painting on them and use them as escort cards.

That is an awesome painting. I like the idea of using them as thank you cards! Maybe you Photoshop it to include your names at the bottom where it says “Juntos Hasta La Muerte?”

I love Olvera Street! I have been an East Coast girl for over 2 decades but I was born in LA and still miss the warm weather and delicious Mexican food.

I’ve had this Mexican fiesta wedding stored in my reader for months now - maybe you can draw some (less morbid) inspiration from this? http://greenweddingshoes.com/real-wedding-maya-daves-eclectic-fiesta-wedding/

If you have other wedding-related events (welcome/rehearsal dinner, farewell brunch), why not use some of your ideas there??
