FRIENDOR - (frend)

1. An awesome friend who provides a vendor service for your wedding day.

We puffy heart Friendors.

They’ve been the BEST. THING. EVER. In the best case scenario, these friend vendors have your best interests in mind, are experts at their trade, and are cheap-to-free of charge. Yeah, they’re pretty awesome!

For the Ostrich wedding, we have 3 Friendors:

Friendor No. 1:

Miss O’s Hair Stylist - My gal pal D has been cutting my hair for a decade and owns a super cute—and super popular—salon in the Peninsula. We invited her and her hubby to our wedding because they’ve been fun and supportive friends over the years. And when D offered to do my hair for the wedding, I was beaming for days! We have a hair trial in March and I’ll be taking lots of pics to share with the hive. :)

Friendor No. 2:

Miss O’s Makeup Artist - Up until 2 months ago, I was STRESSIN’ about who was going to make me up for our little beach wedding. When you have a specific idea for your blissful bride look, it’s easy to be dubious of local makeup artists right? And as I was 99% convinced I would DIY, Mr. O’s friend, TL, casually mentioned his girlfriend, T, wanted to do my wedding makeup. T has been a fabulous makeup artist for years and has been doing wedding makeup for just as long…and they’re one of our most hilarious, fun-loving pals and were already invited guests to our wedding. I squeaked out a “YES!” and did cartwheels around the house for days. We’re scheduling my trial in the next week or so, stay tuned!

Friendor No. 3:

Our iPod DJ & Emcee - I think I’ve casually mentioned that since Mr. O and I are such music fanatics, we’ve opted to go the iPod DJ route for all of our wedding day music. But the iPod can’t play itself, so we’ve entrusted my awesome HS bestie, S, to be our iPod DJ. And since he’s a professional musician and performer, he also agreed to be our Emcee for the night and my main contact for my Wedding Coordinator. Um, yes, yes, yes please!

In our case, 2 of the 3 friendors offered their services. But fellow brides, if you have friends who are also amazing at their craft, don’t be shy! We approached our friend S in this way: “S, we wanted to ask you first, because we trust you like crazy and consider you the best at what you do—will you be our Emcee for our wedding? It’s totally OK if you’d rather not, (SERIOUSLY!) but we wanted to ask you first.” And when he—and the other friendors—said yes, we asked them what their fee was, like any other vendor. Just because we’re friends didn’t mean we felt entitled to a free service, and we wanted that to be clear. No shady stuff! But because they’re our pals, they refused any sort of payment. So, we’re shopping for cool thank you gifts for them…send your gift ideas our way!

Having three amazing friends who also want to support us with their mad skillz on our wedding day is more than we could’ve wished for. :)

Will you have Friendors for your wedding? Do tell!

When it comes to buying a gift. Consider their hobbies, careers, and personalities.

We don’t have any friendors for the wedding. 1) we don’t have any friends that can do any kind of trade that would be part of a wedding and 2) I wanted contracted professionals who were strangers so I wouldn’t have to worry about hurt feelings or not winding up with exactly what we wanted for the wedding.

I’m not very confrontational as it is but if I’m paying for a service and you are providing that as a professional, it is easier for me to be firm if necessary.

We have a couple friendors and I love that we already have a personal relationship with some of our vendors for the big day. Takes a lot of the stress off of trying to find someone in each profession you click with.

I have a friend doing my eye lash extensions and our family friend is the officiant. Also, my future father-in-law is making the honey for favors. :)

I am not lucky enough to have any friendors. However as sweet and gracious as you are, it is no surprise that your friends are anxious to help you out Ostrich! :)

That is so nice of your friends to do the services for your wedding! We had one friend that we thought of using for our ceremony music, but I really wanted to do the surprise for my dad.

@EMARILU: Thanks for the gift tips, E. :) personalized gifts are always the best.

@R.Elliott: I totally hear you on the double edge sword of friendors. we actually had other people offer to be our officiant and do our music and because we did not think they were exactly what we wanted, we kindly turned them down. I’m a libra and i cower at conflict. ;)

You have great friends, O! While we don’t have friends who practice wedding-related trades, we have a lot of backup support from gals who will help manage the flow of people to guys who will assist in setting up the room. Looking forward to your hair trial stories!

Friendors ROCK!!!

* My best friend from college (amazing clothing designer and textile artist) is designing/making my dress.
* Another good friend from college (who went to the same design school as Miss Crepes!) offered to design and print my invites as a wedding gift.
* A family friend who’s a semi-pro photographer is shooting our wedding.
* One of my aunts-by-choice is designing and making my wedding jewelry.
* FI’s best friend is officiating.

This probably doesn’t count as a friendor, but our venue is my mom’s house. All of this makes me feel so lucky, and like our wedding is a beautiful collaboration. I tear up, actually, when I think about it.

Friendors are the best! Our florist is our close friend and bridesmaid and her mother and my seamstress is a good friend of my mothers. We’ll be paying them a fair sum for their services and it makes me happy to know we’re supporting the craft of some of our favorite people!

Wish I knew someone who had makeup and hair skills!! Since your makeup friend will be at the wedding, she can do touch ups throughout the day-bonus!

Having friendors can be a great way to get friends involved and save some money with mates rates - only you can judge if they are to to the job - there can be some pitfalls http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTS6WQVL1wA but everyone will there to support you on your special day.
