Cake, Take Two

February 24th, 2011 @ 2:20 pm by Mrs. Pain au Chocolat

One of the bakers under consideration is Papa’s Pastry Shop—our neighborhood pastry tasty. They’re our go-to store for birthday cakes, cookies (pignoli!), and more. It all started when Mr. P brought home their chocolate cake for my birthday in 2006.

Then we brought one of their Italian rum cakes to north Jersey for a family function. When the family (chefs and persnickety folks) raved about it, we knew it wasn’t just us that had fallen in love with the cakes. Pretty soon, we were picking up cakes for every birthday.

This delicious carrot cake is studded with walnuts and coated in cream cheese frosting. I’m salivating just thinking about that cake.

And this is a “tiny” raspberry cake I picked up on a whim, not too long after the rotten cherry cake…possibly for tastebud redemption.

While we love our neighborhood bakery, the flavors and style aren’t weddingy enough. Even our favorite flavor, Italian rum, is a little too rustic for what we want. The good news is any of them would make wonderful shower cakes. Who says you can’t spread the cake-love to more than one bakery?

Do you have a favorite neighborhood bakery? Would you use them for your wedding?

A very dear friend of mine is a baker–not professionally, but she can bake like you wouldn’t believe. Her gift to us is 4 different kind of cupcakes, a small cake for cutting, 3 kinds of cookies and whoopie pies. I feel pretty fortunate to not have to shop around for a baker. Her desserts are very homemade and rustic, but that matches the feel of our wedding so we don’t mind.

I’m just glad you wiped your palette clean of the dreaded cherry cake. ;)

Carrot cake! Yum! We used our pastry place for our cake, but they have a portion dedicated to wedding cakes, so it just worked out.

Out of curiousity, what makes a cake flavor “rustic” or “wedding-y”? I say if it tastes good and you like it then why not serve it! The raspberry cake looks yummy!

@canadianbacon: Have you decided on cupcake flavors yet?
@Mrs. Meerkat: Words cannot describe! Simply divine. And now I feel badly for talking about cake when you don’t live nearby to try them!
@Miss Lox: Yeh, I was pretty traumatized. Bad cake is a mean joke. I knew Papa’s would make it all better.@Yin: Hey DE bee! Have you tried their gelato??
@TheFutureMcBride: Best carrot cake I’ve ever had. And I eat a lot of cake.

@Miss Treble: Good question. Initially it was b/c the rum cake’s exterior is covered in lady fingers and we wanted a cleaner look. Realizing that, yes, it could be covered in icing or fondant but that would mess up the already perfect flavors and icing/cake ratio. Also… there is a generous amount of rum in the rum cake [who knew! ;)], which I felt wasn’t fair to non-drinking family members.

We don’t really have a neighborhood baker….in fact, I only know of one bakery that specializes in cakes in my town…and actually, they specialize in cupcakes, and even MORE actually, they’re not that good. It makes me sad that I can’t just go out and buy an awesome yummy cake from some local joint.

I am not having a cake testing. I guess cake is cake (for the most part) in my opinion. I love the classic white cake with buttercream icing (and a hint of almond extract), that’s all I need. A family friend/coworker of FI’s is a cake decorator on the side and she is gifting us our cake. I sent her a picture of what I’d like, but if it looks nothing like it, I’ll still be okay. (as long as it’s not topped with precious moments or something)

Now I want cake.
I hope I have fresh eggs to bake with :P

There are a ton of great bakers here locally, but lucky for me my aunt used to be the head baker for one of the best(imo) shops and she has graciously offered to make our cake/cupcakes as a wedding gift. I like free and I like cake, so it’s double good :D

Interestingly, we used a neighborhood baker. I was a bit scared when I saw the cake samples in the shop and in the book because they were a bit scary looking (lopsided, etc). But, they tasted so good (mom even liked them and she’s a picky cake person). I was so pleasantly surprised. I’d driven by this bakery for years and never walked in until someone suggested it.

Every year for my birthday I get a cake from Boonzaaijer’s Bakery in my hometown of Kalamazoo. Their cakes are to DIE for, and I could eat their frosting by the spoonful. Had our wedding been there, we totally would have gone with them for our cake! All of the cakes you shared sound so delicious!

This is totally a nomnom week on the blog.

I would def have tried to go local if I didn’t go personal first! A bridesmaid did double duty as my pastry chef.
