Mrs. Lioness, Atlanta Age and Occupation: 25, Physical Therapist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Attorney Engagement Date: August 29, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Anthony’s Fine Dining About Me: I’m a Southern girl with New England roots. I say "wicked" and "y’all" in the same sentence and I like to drink sweet tea with my lobster. Mr. Lion and I are both former Floridians now living in Atlanta, which fortunately is still SEC country...Go Gators! We both love baseball, coffee, traveling, cooking, and playing Words with Friends with each other on our iPhones all day long. I’m very passionate about the things and the people I love, and I tend to plan things with all of my heart...our wedding, of course, is no different! Oh, and also Mr. Lion is a first generation American of Cuban descent. I may look more like Lucy than Ricky, but I’m doing my best to incorporate some Latin elements into our vintage-garden-Southern wedding!

Gratitude & Grits

February 25th, 2011 @ 5:12 pm by Mrs. Lioness

Though not as exclusive to the region as the groom’s cake, it is a Southern tradition to thank your bridesmaids with a luncheon. This is usually held the morning of the wedding, or during the afternoon the day before. Unfortunately, our wedding is at 11AM, so this ruled out “morning of.” Our rehearsal will be at 5PM the day before, so that made it a little too tight to squeeze in during the afternoon. This lead me to my favorite meal of the day, brunch!

Some of my favorite places to brunch in Atlanta: Feast, Einstein’s, Parish, Murphy’s, and Ria’s Bluebird

Sure, there are a lot of great brunch places around here. You’d think it’d be tough to choose between all of these delicious locations, but it wasn’t. I wanted my bridesmaids to feel celebrated.

They’ve done so much for me, and many of them are traveling from out of state to stand by me on our wedding day. I wanted delicious, casual food with a bright, colorful, fun backdrop. I looked no further than the Flying Biscuit.

The Flying Biscuit is an Atlanta tradition. It began in Midtown, as a simple biscuit shop. They now have several locations throughout Atlanta, and even a few in North Carolina and Florida. They serve a lot more than biscuits now, too. Think Southern food with a twist. Oh, there’s grits and bacon, but they also offer chicken sausage, whole grain pancakes, and omelets with arugula and goat cheese. They haven’t forgotten their roots though; the biscuits are still the most popular item on the menu.

If you’re wondering what that sauce is that’s served with the biscuits, it’s some kind of apple butter. I don’t know how to describe it other than “it tastes like Christmas.”

I love the ambiance in the restaurant, too. The mismatched tablecloths, handmade tabletop decor, and eclectic wall art are sure to convey a sense of fun as I thank my girls for all of their hard work.

If the weather is nice, we can even sit out on the patio, which is Lion Corgi friendly!

Are you throwing a luncheon for your bridesmaids? Where did you choose to do it?

Just had my first Flying Biscuit meal when we visited the FIL’s in Georgia over Thanksgiving. Delicious BLT salad with fried green tomatoes and a biscuit. I was over the moon - perhaps I should’ve been born in the South.

Bridesmaids’ luncheon there would be heaven!

OMG I want brunch now. At the moment I’m hungry enough that I just might eat anything that doesn’t run away fast enough. But I wish there were some biscuits and grits nearby…

mmm……brunch. Couldn’t do this for my girls, as the wedding was on a Friday. That was the toughest thing about a Friday wedding - not having that whole day before to spend with the bridal party.

Brunch sounds so good! Due to an early rehearsal time we are probably going to have to do breakfast.

Man this sounds good! My family is Southern and I’d actually still never heard of a bridesmaids luncheon until my grandmother was freaking out that she wouldn’t arrive in town in time to arrange one. (Um so I guess there is also a tradition of the bride’s grandmother being involved in this? Whatever.) We didn’t have one, but I did stock our getting-ready room with tons of delicious pastries from a favorite local bakery. My bridesmaids were able to delightfully stuff themselves on the day of the wedding.

Wow! The flying biscuit in Atlanta looks way nicer than the one here in Gainesville, FL! The Biscuit is one of our favorite Sunday brunch spots. YUM!

Mmmmm apple butter. I want to reach through the screen and grab a handful of those biscuits right now! I need to give more thought to what we’ll do for food the morning of the wedding. I’m totally unfamiliar with places to eat near our venue!

Want. Biscuit. Now. :) Will have to add that to the list of places to eat if I make it to Atlanta sometime!

Roux, it’s not exactly the same, but they are quite similar to a traditional scone. I’m looking at a cookbook I have called “Biscuits and Scones”, and even the author can’t quite clearly define the difference. :)

@Roux: a biscuit is not as dense as a scone and generally is not flavored. They are lovely little pieces of heaven that bake light and fluffy with a slight salty flavor. ok, now my mouth is watering lol

Actually, the Candler Park location is the original, the Midtown location came second :)

I also got married in the ATL and did a bridal luncheon- it’s kind of a tradition in my family (i.e. my 3 female cousins before me, and then me) that my grandmother and great-aunt host the luncheon at the Swan Coach House in Buckhead. Not the most convenient since we got married in Decatur, but very fun.
I love the Flying Biscuit- that’s where we did a bridesmaid lunch for another friend of mine. They have the world’s absolute best grits- if there’s anyone in your wedding party who has never tried grits, Flying Biscuit is the place to do it!

Thought I’d pipe in since I’m in ATL also!

We didn’t do anything too formal, but had a bridesmaids brunch the morning of the wedding and we did it at Rosebud in Morningside/Highlands.

I had literally the best brunch dish I’ve ever had - it was the daily special - a short ribs egg benedict. I still think about it!
