Vintage Decor

February 25th, 2011 @ 3:19 pm by Mrs. Cotton Candy

I shared with you in my first post the mister’s and my desire to infuse our wedding with some mid-century style, but until now I haven’t shared any of our decor plans. One of my favorite ways that we are incorporating our mid-century aesthetic into our wedding is with some of our current home-décor accessories. Our house is sprinkled with a large number of thrifted and inherited collections—pieces that I hope to cart with us for our reception and cocktail décor.

First is Mr. CC’s collection of vintage cameras. I’m thinking of using these to decorate our cocktail tables instead of fresh flowers.

Mr. Cotton Candy and I are both huge readers and have amassed a small collection of vintage books. Some of the books in our collection are over a hundred years old.

The two pieces I’m most excited about are Mr. Cotton Candy’s late dad’s sewing machine and his mom’s Tiffany blue typewriter.

The typewriter was a gift to his mom from his grandma when they first emigrated from Mexico to the US. The mister’s grandma wanted his mom to land a job in an office and gave her a typewriter as a way for her to learn to type. The sewing machine also has a special meaning to Mr. CC and his family. It was originally purchased by Mr. CC’s father at a yard sale and was used by his dad to sew and mend his clothing.

Last is our Depression-glass cake knife.

I purchased the knife one day when we were window shopping in downtown Pomona. The owner had it labeled as a butter-and-cheese knife, but I really didn’t care; it was so cute and vintage-y that size didn’t matter. We’re not planning to have a large formal cake, so I’m confident that our little knife will be able to do the job.

I’m super excited to infuse our wedding with a little bit of our personal items. It also makes me happy to know that once our wedding is over with these items will sit in our home and serve as a reminder of the day we became man and wife.

Are you bringing in any of your current personal belongings to decorate your reception?

These are gorgeous! What a beautiful collection! Are you at all concerned about wedding day mishaps that might damage some of your beautiful pieces though?

Awesome cameras and books!!!

I am trying to use (or reuse) almost all vintage elements at our wedding as well. We are using fiesta ware for the dishes & flower arrangements. I have a friend who is letting me use her vintage tablecloths and I’m trying to only buy things at goodwill or salvation army to save on our carbon footprint.

The tricky thing for me is figuring out who is going to put all of it away at the end of the night. I know friends and family are going to help with setup but I’m really stuck as to who is going to do the breakdown.

We are hoping to refinish some furniture that was handed down to us from my grandparent’s to use a a guest sign in table, or a cake table. I love the sewing machine and typewriter, such nice vintage pieces with sentiment!

I love the vintage and personal touches these items will give your wedding reception! The mister and I used the Jazz Age as our main theme and hunted for a vintage typewriter to use as our guestbook. Unfortunately every one we came across that worked was too expensive or too modern, but we decided to frame our seating chart and loved it. We took some books we owned but did not make them a focal point; the effect was, however, just what we wanted :)

Congratulations and have fun putting your personal touches on your day!
