Mrs. Brooch's Picture
Mrs. Brooch, Arlington, VA Age and Occupation: 25, Writer/Editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Front Desk Manager Engagement Date: October 3, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Oxon Hill Manor About Me: I’m an indecisive girlie-girl with a motor mouth, can-do attitude, and knack for making others laugh. I dream of becoming a best selling novelist like Elizabeth Gilbert or Julie Powell (a girl can dream, right?), and love long road trips, a beautiful countryside, music, blogs, books, and all things vintage/thrift/antique/or homemade. I’m a Virgo, i.e. overly sensitive, emotional, and critical, and there’s no such thing as short and sweet in my world. I want to say and do it all. Mr. Brooch grounds me. I point where to go and he figures out the way. He’s a pragmatic fancy-pants who enjoys video games and movies. We both adore our mutt, Rocky, and spending time with our amazingly supportive family and friends. We’re planning a garden wedding with a formal reception with lots of whimsy and unique, Southern-inspired details.

Engraving…I’m Drawing a Blank!

February 28th, 2011 @ 5:44 pm by Mrs. Brooch

We picked our wedding bands! Yay! We are purchasing them from a local jeweler, Laney’s in Williamsburg, VA where Mr. B bought (actually designed!) my engagement ring. I’m going this weekend to buy them and get Mr. B’s ring engraved, but I have a problem—I have no idea what the engraving should be!

Here are some of my options:

Traditional - I heard the traditional engraving is the bride’s maiden initials to the groom’s initials and the date. I love the timelessness of that idea, but I think I want to do something more original.

Bible Verses - We’re both very spiritual and believe that we need to keep God at the center of our marriage. We discussed some of Mr. B’s favorite verses, Galatians 2:20 and Proverbs 3:5 as options, but I’m not sure I want to take that route, either.

Funny - I saw a really funny one on TV once that said “Put it back on!”

Sayings - I also thought of using a saying we said to each other a lot during our relationship. When we first started dating we would always say, “It is what it is!”

Those all seem way too crude  though, and I don’t want the engraving in his ring to be joke.

Meaningful and new -

I haven’t decided just yet, but my fiance frequently sends me cute instant messages that say “pssst… i love you.” I thought that would be adorable to put on the inside of a ring as it’s sentimental and humorous.

I am already married, but I was trying to figure this one out too. I finally decided on something special to both of us. We, initially, met in Grade School at John P. Freeman Optional School…so I decided on “From Freeman to Forever”

my hubby’s isn’t engraved but mine has “ani l’dodi v’dodi li” in Hebrew, meaning I am my beloveds and my beloved is mine. I also contemplated ahava, which means love

We ended up getting things engraved in both our bands. Mine says “I love you” with our wedding date, and his says “I love you more” and the date. We did that because usually when one of us says “I love you” the other will say, “Nope, I love you more”! It wasn’t an easy decision though - we spent months trying to pick something!

I just read a cute story on the ‘bee about this, but I can’t remember where… she engraved “no returns, no refunds” in his custom band :)

I ended up engraving “Forever and Ever” on Mr Frenchie’s band as a surprise. It sounds creepy stalkerish out of context, but it’s something we say to each other all the time :)

Our personal joke is that he called “dibbs” on me when he asked me to marry him. I’m having dibbs engraved on his ring and the date.

Thanks for the link to our engraving post! For your engraving, how about a combination of your phrase with something more timeless? Like “It is what it always will be.” I love the idea of something personal that could only be in your bands.

Is the title of your first dance song romantic at all? That’s what I was thinking of using.

I’m going to put “show me grace.” I think that it is a fundamental aspect of marriage. So many times people get caught up in the things that annoy them in their marriage instead of showing one another grace!

We’re still trying to figure out what to engrave on each other’s bands! Maybe by our first anniversary we’ll have decided on something?

I’ve always liked “With this ring, I thee wed,” since I cry EVERY SINGLE TIME I hear those words spoken at a wedding. But after reading this, I also like “one love, one lifetime.” Big broadway fan here :) FI and I both plan on getting our rings engraved though, so I’ll run some of these past him!

We’re thinking of “love is enough”, “love endlessly”, or “a deal’s a deal”. The last one isn’t very romantic, but I think that we live in a society where people give up on their relationships a lot quicker than they used to. A deal’s a deal reminds me of how no matter what it’s important to realise the gravity of the “deal” you just made with the other person (:

We both have “All My Love, All My Life” since it’s a family saying that dates back to his great-grandfather and I love it!

If I do engrave his ring, it would be “to the moon” We watch the Honeymooner’s marathon every New Year’s Day but I made it a good thing by telling him “I love you to the moon”

When we were first starting to date but it was still in that “what are we phase” my FI went out of town for a weekend to visit his mom. We had been spending a lot of time together up until then but things were still cloudy and we figured the weekend apart might help us get a little clarity about how we felt things were going. We hadn’t planned to call each other, even though I was secretly hoping that he would. Saturday night the phone rang and guess who it was!? As soon as I heard his voice I started bouncing around the room exclaiming “It’s you! It’s you! It’s you! It’s you!” I haven’t gotten FI’s ring engraved, yet, but if I do I think that’s what I’ll have them put…

We didn’t engrave. My ring has diamonds around it and thus can’t be engraved and we had such trouble getting my husband’s band size correct, we just sort of forgot about engraving.

ANYWAY… I love Courtney Cox & David Arquette’s engravings in one another’s rings: “A deal’s a deal.”

Now maybe it’s a bad example since they’re now separated but it was a saying that they said to one another while they dated and throughout their engagement and went with it. Therefore, I really like the idea of engraving a saying that is meaningful to the couple.

I like ‘Yours’ and ‘Love You/Love You More’, but we won’t be getting ours done. Mr CB’s is tungsten, and engraving would void the warranty for free replacing/polishing/repair and everything. I don’t see a point in engraving mine and not his.
