Mrs. Jaguar's Picture
Mrs. Jaguar, Sydney Age and Occupation: 27, Primary School Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, IT Consultant Engagement Date: August 8, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2011 Venue: Curzon Hall About Me: I'm an Australian girl who is a self-proclaimed nerd, loves all things stationery and would be lost without books, music and the internet. Mr. Jaguar and I have been together for the past eight years and he finally popped the question last August. Hurrah! We currently live in Sydney, Australia with our adorable cat who thinks he's a person. We're a couple who likes to multi-task: we've been planning a wedding abroad, a permanent move from London to Sydney, and preparing to build our own home all at the same time. Travelling makes me giddy...as does Mr. Jaguar, of course!
About Mrs. Jaguar

Since I bought my dress off the rack, I’ve been lucky enough to have it with me for the past couple of months. It lives in its garment bag on the back of my parents’ bedroom door—and other than opening it up to stare at it every now and again, it’s stayed in its place for months. December turned into January, January turned into February, and now February is over: meaning that I need to start figuring out what I want to do with my wedding dress.

You would’ve thought that having it home with me would’ve been a constant temptation to try it on and waltz around the house in it—but nope. I’ve been putting it off, and not for a good reason. You see, I’ve been worried that I wouldn’t fit into my wedding dress anymore—and not in the good ‘I’ve lost a few kilos and it’s falling off me’ kind of way.

Back in my early days blogging for the ‘bee, I wrote a post explaining my struggle with losing weight.

Mr. Jaguar: it’s time to go. Dress picture ahead: you’ve been warned!

That was in October, a month before I ended up buying my dress while overseas. I was, and still am, a plus sized bride-to-be. And I am, just as I was then, still a-ok with that. It’s who I am, and I like myself. I may struggle with body image from time to time, but I’m me. What’s frustrating is that after losing over 25lbs last year {before blogging that post} is that since then? I’m still exactly the same weight. In fact, I’ve even put on a few pounds. Sure, travelling for a month will do that to some people, but as soon as we got home and got into our routines again, I was expecting to plug on away at the weight loss. That hasn’t happened. I’ve upped the exercise, and am currently on Week 4 of the C25K programme, but that hasn’t made a difference.

So what’s that got to do with my dress? EVERYTHING! I squeezed into a Size 16 standard dress in the store, and I was thrilled. Don’t get me wrong, I still love my dress—it’s beautiful, everything I wanted to look like in a gown—but it was snug then, and I was terrified to have another fitting for fear of it not doing up. Since it was nearly March and seeing that my mum had never seen me in the dress aside from photos, I finally worked up the courage to try it on this past weekend.

On the bright side? The dress does zip up. I was worried about this the most, since it has no corset and is just a zipper back. Mum and I were laughing as we were doing it up, since I was having flashbacks to that Bulging Brides TV show, where their dresses don’t fit and they have a few inches of zipper that just won’t do up! Thankfully, we got it up. :) It was snug then, and it is still snug now. Thankfully, I think it still looks okay—what do you think? This is the dress minus my beautiful lace bolero, which is still my all-time favourite thing in the entire world. (Look at my original dress post to see them together!)

(My squashed little dress needs a good steaming… poor thing!)

Here’s where it gets a trifle irritating. The boobage-area is a lot looser than it was three months ago – so I must have lost some weight in that region, which is always the first place to go. But it’s still tight in the tummy and hips, meaning I need to focus on slimming that area down. That’s where you see the dress pulling, particularly at the back where the zipper is – we didn’t attempt each individual button, but I can see it’s going to be tough getting them done up with me at this size. See the strain?

(Please excuse the blurry iPhone pictures.)

So what to do? I have nearly 100 days exactly until the wedding, so we have a bit of time to work with here. I plan on investing in my first pair of heavy duty gut-sucking undergarments, since I don’t own a pair of them, and I want to see how many wrinkles they smooth down. But the next step is working on my diet big time: I really need to lose a few inches over the next few months to feel more comfortable in the dress. (I love how I look in the gown, but it’s not the most comfortable to sit down in, if you get my drift.)

And the big question is, how long do I leave it before getting some alterations done? I have to have the dress hemmed and to figure out some sort of a bustle, as well as no doubt getting it taken in a wee bit around my chest, but I don’t want to do that too early, since I’m hoping to lose a little more in the coming months. Any ideas to help a girl out?

I would say wait until 60 days out before thinking about alternations. My weight went up and down the couple months before the wedding. I think it was stress. ;)

I was told 4-6 weeks before the wedding so that you will be as close to the same size as possible but still have plenty of time to go back for more fittings and adjustments after the first round of major work (hem, bustle, etc.)

This might vary if you have a very busy seamstress or a local like I do that does this full time. I was told that normally it would be closer to 4 weeks than 6, but that with prom season she just wanted the extra two weeks to make sure she didn’t have to rush my dress.

I agree! Find a seamstress you like, and ask her how long she will need to do the things you think you will need done- taking in here and there, etc etc. She will likley suggest what you can have done now to get out of the way- the length for example on mine, and maybe some adjustment to that zipper area etc.
Even then, sop many people, including my bridal shop, tell me I will loose a few pounds before the wedding- even without meaning too. Im having all alterations done now, and then 3-4 weeks before the wedding theyll do the final itty bitty adjustments to the size.
Anyway- I think you look fab! Gotta love that sweetheart neckline :-)

Your dress looks great on Miss. Jag! It doesn’t actually look tight at all in the back from your pictures. If you’re looking for just a little bit of a tummy tuck though, spanx do a girl WONDERS. They’ll definitely smooth you over and suck you in a bit. But…they’re not the most comfortable thing in my opinion. I bought and wore my first pair last month. When I tried to put them on, I had to look at the package to make sure I bought the right size. I couldn’t get them past my lower thigh at first. They were the right size and SUPER tight. I eventually got them on and loved my smooth tummy but I the comfort level wasn’t the best. Hope that helps. Good luck!

I know we can’t see how it feels from the pictures, but I can tell you that it *looks* fantastic. That dress really does all the right things for you. :)

You look absolutely gorgeous in that dress–the neckline and silhouette are lovely. From the pictures the dress doesn’t LOOK tight, but you want to feel good in it since you will be wearing it all day! If you really want to lose a few inches (rather than having the dress taken out), I have had quick, healthy results with Weight Watchers. Essentially just increase your fruit, veggie, high protein/low-fat sources (think quinoa, beans, legumes) and cut out the salt, junk, carbs and fat. You are stunning (and the bolero is to die for—where is it from?)

OMG honey, you are way too critical! You look lovely with no alterations! Girl, I wish I had your curves. I have the falling off problem… thats the trouble when wearing a family dress. I feel ya on the avoidance factor. I don’t relish getting it altered, and I keep hoping that by some miracle it will fit in the chest. So I haven’t tried on my dress in almost a year! But seriously, you look truly fantastic. No one will see your flaws but you.

It LOOKS fantastic, but you need to be comfortable. I definitely recommend a good pair of Spanx, it could make all the difference for you!

Plus, I would recommend a healthy sensible diet like Weight Watchers (I’ve lost over 60lbs with it) so you don’t starve yourself right before the wedding! Good luck!

Wow! You look great!! :) I was reading your old weight blog…& it nice to see another bride on here that shares PCOS! (Well not exactly good….but you know what I mean….) I’ve been stuggling with my weight too & now that marriage is in the picture I can’t help but start stressing about fertility……if you ever want to chat send me a message! :)

You look great! But you want to be comfortable too. I am 88 days away from my wedding so I have seriously cut my calorie intake (portion control is hard!) and upped my excersice–lots of running and strength training. It was so much easier for me to slim down 10 years ago :( I hate to be obsessive about it but I found that if I don’t constantly think about it I find myself cheating and thinking “oh–one order of french fries won’t make a difference”. And if I start skipping the gym then it’s hard to go back. Good Luck! At least you know you’ll look good even if you can’t sit down–haha

LOVE your dress! I had the same issues as you, and I waited until about 3 weeks before my wedding for alterations… BUT… I made sure to talk with the seamstress explicitly about waiting so long and make sure she could get it done in time. She had a serious lull happening around the time of my wedding so it was no problem, but I wouldn’t count on being able to wait so long if you don’t talk about it.

My dress is snug as well, without alterations. I was at my slimmest when I bought it last August. I run a lot during the summer and well, slack off a lot during the winter. That plus going off BC has made me gain 5 pounds which makes getting the inner corset on my dress to hook together a real struggle. Hopefully the summer will get me back in shape, wedding is in 6 months!

Jag, you look amazing! Your dress is beautiful, and it shows off your fabulous figure. For final alterations, my seamstress suggested a fitting about a month out from the wedding. :)

I’ve been wanting to try one, but have you thought about a liquid cleanse diet? You can order it online, but it supposedly clears out all the toxins and crap in your body and helps you shed uneccesary weight etc.. . does anybody do those down there?

Your dress looks great. Even though it feels snug it doesn’t look snug at all! Spanx are great (or really any other copycat brand). It will make the dress feel a little “smoother” over your body. To help make the dress feel less snug without getting diet crazy, I recommend cutting out most carbs closer to the wedding day. That has helped me a lot in the past to get into gowns for events. Diff. things work for diff people, but if carbs bloat you out it will help tons to make you feel more comfortable on the big day.

I think the dress looks as beautiful as ever! Try the spanx, but don’t get them too thick. Sometimes they add more “bulk”. You’ve got plenty of time to lose a little bit of weight to make you more comfy in the dress and I bet it can be let out a tad if you don’t. And the couple weeks before the wedding make sure you skip salt, alcohol, soda and go light on the carbs. That plus lots of water will help you feel “lighter” and help tone down the bulges. I am already dreading missing out on the alcohol in the days leading up to the wedding, but I know I’ll like my pictures better if I do.
