Wanna Get Away?

March 3rd, 2011 @ 3:25 pm by Mrs. Pain au Chocolat

I can think of no better time to dream of a tropical getaway than in the middle of yet another snowstorm. The snow is just pouring down, but our thoughts are on planning the honeymoon.

When Mr. P asked what sort of trip I wanted to take, my only requirement was “warm and beachy.” After the stress and exhaustion of planning and hosting a wedding, I don’t think we’ll be game for anything more strenuous than reaching for margaritas and guacamole.

Warm and beachy is a good place to start. Our ideal destination wouldn’t take more than six hours to reach, and the airfare shouldn’t eat into the room-and-board budget too much…ideally. There are a handful of destinations below for which we may be willing to bend the rules a bit. Without further delay, I present the “Could you be our honeymoon?” contestants:

My bf is Puerto Rican and I loved going there! Flights can be as low as $99 dollars from NYC (thru airtran)
We went to El Yunque (rainforest) and Old San Juan. THere are lots of tiny islands around PR and you can get a private boat there and explore.

Go for Cancun!!! Best bang for your buck! Don’t go with the west coast of Mexico, the beaches are bleuch! With Cancun you get the Caribbean ocean and AMAZING hotel prices :-) Do the Selvatica zipline tour if you do go, it’s the most fun ever zipping through the jungle!

Done Mexico, Hawaii and Puerto Rico - Vieques was magical and the bio bay experience was best thing I’ve ever done on vacay… but we finally chose an all inclusive in mexico b/c of the quick flight, cost, and relaxation we wanted…

They all look amazing. The only one I can answer to personally is St. Lucia, and I will say I flat out loved it. But honestly, everything on this list looks amazing!

@Miss Magic: Sure! ;) I big-puffy-heart love to plan.@Ginevra: It’s important to keep airfare in mind with skyrocketing gas prices.@melissabrady611: All-inclusives take the bother of dealing with money right out of the equation — my margarita soaked brain wouldn’t mind that one bit. @KMA: Bio bay is on my bucket list.@Mrs. Meerkat: We vacationed on Yucatan in 08 and had a blast. We attended a charity auction recently where a week in an Ambergris Caye condo went for $550. Cheeeeap cheap cheap!
@Gerbera: Whoever thought of the over-water bungalows is pure genius.

this post is the literal interpretation of “going to your happy place”! Do you know what kind of lodging atmosphere you want? that might help narrow it down– all inclusive; exotic and isolated; lots of activities; nothing but hammocks and umbrella drinks; etc
as your narrow down top places to stay in each location, don’t forget to include the travel difficulty of getting from the airport to where you would want to stay. Is it a four hour bumpy bus ride? is it a 15 minute shuttle ride included with the resort?

I sooooo wanted to go to Tahiti/Moorea for our honeymoon but like you didn’t want to blow the whole budget on airfare. It would have been over $3000 for 2 and we live on the west coast! We are going to Costa Rica instead and I can not wait! Looked into Belize though too and it looked awesome as well. I know some people love Turks & Caicos but there isn’t much to do there but sit on the beach, which for me is nice for a week but I can’t do much more than that.

(re: my jumbled last comment - that’s what I get for replying from my phone… *sigh*)
@smiles1979: After the cold, windy, wet weather I would go anywhere provided it’s closer to the equator!
@kris1423: Ooooo, so jealous! It looks awesome - have a grand time!!
@Miss Lox: St Lucia was tops on our list before we were even engaged! Ladera was our favorite resort. Where did you stay?
@dolphindoll: I’m clicking my heels but I’m not getting anywhere! Activities are great, especially if they’re included and we’re not being cajoled to participate. Non-all inclusive is sometimes a smarter budget option; we’ve “done the math” for our favorite places to determine what’s a good value. Avoiding long, bumpy rides (no Ladera this trip!). No kids and fewer people are ideal.

I can’t speak to any of these fabulous looking destinations, but Belize jumps out at me because of the adventure (and history) aspect! I know people who have gone to Puerto Rico and loved it.

@xtatic1: We’re on the East Coast; the airfare AND travel time were killer for those destinations. Our airfare just shot up $150/pp in the last week. Our friends did a T&C honeymoon because he worked for a hotel chain and received a great discount. Had we planned ahead, we would have paid for everything with a rewards credit card.

We went to Anguilla and Virgin Gorda (BVI) on our HM! We had exactly the same criteria — not too long of a flight, warm and beachy. Both islands were beautiful, and the beach where we stayed in Anguilla was amazing, but I think Grace Bay in Turks & Caicos tops them both. :)

My vote is for the British Virgin Islands! The beach, the deep blue water, and the craggy landscape look like paradise to me :)

A day’s worth of travel time would be more easily traded for a more distant destination if you had a long honeymoon. How much time are you taking?

DH and I just returned from our French Polynesian honeymoon, I would do it all a million times over again. As a friendly btw: Bora Bora is a 45 min flight from Tahiti :)
