Invitation Assembly, Part I

March 3rd, 2011 @ 8:14 am by Ms. Sloth

To catch you up: I won a design from A Printable Press based on my idea for a gig poster invitation suite, and I decided to bite off of Mrs. Thimble’s idea for Moo Cards and bakers twine to tie the whole thing together.

And then, four months went by in which I didn’t mention our invitations one bit. Well, here’s what happened in that four months:

First, I got our proof from A Printable Press and went insane with joy because they looked so incredible:

(Trust me, it looks better without our last names blurred out)

Second, I ordered oru cardstock and envelopes with custom liners from CardsAndPockets.com.

I also ordered mini cards from Moo, and when they arrived, I used my heart-shaped hole puncher to make pretty little holes. Again, I totally stole this entire idea, including the layout of the card itself, from Mrs. Thimble!

And then, I spent a little bit of time and a lot of toner printing out the invitations on our own printer.

I’ll be honest: a big part of me wishes that I’d paid for professional printing. Our invitations look okay, I suppose, but they don’t have the vibrant color that a professional printer could’ve given us:

(It’s not quite this bad; I wasn’t able to capture it very well with my crappy point-and-shoot)

But I think that the money we saved was worth it, all in all. But there is a part of me that will always be a little bit sad that we didn’t spring for fancy letterpress and beautiful, super-thick paper.

Okay, I’m over it.

Next, I stressed over how to address the envelopes. Calligraphy? No, too pricey? Custom labels? Now you’re talkin’! Unfortunately, my original idea didn’t work out when the Lady Rene font that I fell in love with just wasn’t readable enough when I printed out sheet of test labels. So, instead, I used a much simpler (and free) font: Pea So Lovely.

Since the new font was so simple, I decided to design labels that were a but busier. I printed them out on inkjet sticker paper and cut them out using a plastic ruler, utility knife, and self-healing cutting mat.

And then, the invitations were ready to be assembled!

Did you DIY your invitations?

The suite looks really great! And while I have mad crazy love for nice deep letterpress, I think these invites will be fun and memorable for your guests. And that’s what matters! :)

I JUST mailed my DIY invitations Tuesday! I created some pocket folds. I wish I would have sent a “test” invite to myself first to see how it went through the mail - because my FMIL’s beautiful handwriting on the outside totally got smudged. The invitation wasn’t perfect- a la your thought about professionally printing them - but they were 100% done by me and FI - so I am proud of them!!

I LOVE yours! Can’t wait to see the final reveal!!

These look great! We did not DIY ours (thankfully) since it would have been a fail. We etsy-ed ours and were really happy with the results!

I know you miss the vibrant colors, but I think a just-a-bit-faded look makes it look AMAZING and more like a poster. I love it!

Your invitation suite looks fabulous! We did DIY our invitations through vista print so we could design the invitation to suit our needs but also get a professionally-printed product. We did this only because we went with vintage-style postcards that were printed, and posted, as postcards. Before hitting on that idea we were going to print them ourselves.

I actually like the muted tones a lot better than the in-your-face bright ones. It gives the whole piece that vintage poster feel the design is channeling. I love how these came out!!

The invites came out great! My DIY invitations are designed now I’m just asking everyone I know to proofread them because I am afraid of having a glaring mistake. Once my nerves are calmed we’ll get to printing them and designing the address labels.

Your invitation design is fantastic! Like the PPs, I also like the muted colors–it definitely lends a vintage flair!

those look great! I did DIY our invitations and had them printed at Kinkos because my inkjet is horrible and it was cheaper to print there than buy a new one. Plus Kinkos will cut them out for you (I had 2 per page).

No joke, if I got this invitation in the mail my immediate reaction would be “I cannot WAIT to go to this wedding!”. And I’m not a paper-product-loving girl, per se, so it takes a heckuva lot to illicit that response from me. I’m mad jealous that my invitations didn’t look JUST like this.

I adore your invitation!!! I love that it has the letterpress look/style (if that makes any sense…)
We semi-DIYed our invitations. I purchased a kit from Target and we spruced up the suite with envelope liners and custom logo stickers. Each of my invitations was different (I sent out around 65 invites total). I’m a freak and took a picture of each invite I sent out, so if you have some spare time, take a look! I was so proud of all my hard work :)
