By day I am lucky enough to work with individuals with autism and their families. By night, I’m even luckier to be able to spend time hanging out with awesome friends, crafting, shopping, thinking about exercising, and kicking it with Mr. Magic and our two cats. I tend to have sudden, intense cravings that will not be denied (seafood enchiladas! new jeans!) and I’m prone to being a disorganized mess of anxiety and stress. After waiting (and waiting!) to get engaged, I am finally planning the colorful, fun, fabulously awesome Fall wedding of our dreams. C’mon Ride Da Train…

March 3rd, 2011 @ 10:44 am by Mrs. Magic

Miss Magic’s Memo: I jumped on this train last April and have been chugging along ever since!

The milk-glass-centerpiece train, that is!

Choo choooooooooooo!

I’m on it. Soooooooooooo on it. And guess what? Mr. “I don’t really care anything about the wedding but I hate those stupid vintage cans they are too country and can’t we do something more formal and traditional” Magic is ALSO on the milk-glass train! All aboooooooard!

Milk-glass centerpieces are blowing up in wedding land. Here are some images:

I’m in good company, too! Check out some of these bees who have also used milk glass: Mrs. Pretzel, Mrs. Turtle, Miss Brooch, Miss Oatmeal, and Mrs. Stripes, just to name a few!

So, Mini Magic and I headed to the Raleigh Flea Market to see just how plentiful these milk-glass containers were, and how expensive. They were quite plentiful, but some were quite pricey—$25! $45! I don’t think so.

But then, I found one lovely lady who had a dollar table. Oh. Snap.

C'mon Ride Da Train... : wedding chapel hill decor Www.weddingbee http://www.weddingbee.com/

I got these five pieces for $7! That’s, um, hang on…$1.40 a piece!

***Disclaimer: To me, milk glass means anything white with a design. To some folks, they might see these dollar-table finds as rubbish. This does not matter to me. Hobnob pattern versus, um, some other pattern…it’s all the same to me!***

It’s still early, but right now I’m thinking dark brown table cloth, white plates, white napkins with aubergine and burnt orange (can’t help it, it sounds so much better than saying “purple and orange”) napkin rings, and aubergine and burnt orange flowers (and some green up in there). Whatcha think?

Have you found any great finds at great prices?

oooh…I LOVE LOVE LOVE milk glass! But like you I am not willing to spend a fortune buying them. They are usually relatively cheap and you can find them all over online reasonably but I don’t want to deal with shipping. I am headed to a rummage sale this weekend hoping to find a stash! Great job on the $1.40 finds!

I love the milk glasses, but I’m using them to decorate my home. I found and awesome DIY tutorial online - but can’t find it now…. You can “make your own”.
Get Krylon indoor/outdoor gloss white paint (it’s a spray, I went to Michales) - and spray you some clear flower vases and bada bing bada boom - you have faux milk vases on the cheap!
Be sure to clean the vases with alcohol prior and wear gloves. Oil from your skin reacts with the paint and doesn’t look so bueno when they dry.

I fell in love with Mrs. Husky’s napkin rings, and plan to do something similar with my (your) colors! http://www.weddingbee.com/2010/09/15/diy-napkin-rings/
With over 200 guests, I think I will need to enlist the help of my lovely bridesmaids :)
Just an idea in case you haven’t figured out that part yet…

I loved searching for our milk glass. I set a budget of no more than $3 an item and I think I only went over that once, but most of my stuff was super cheap ($1 or less). I hope you show us more of the goodies you collected, I love seeing different styles!

hehe I can’t imagine why a UNC gal would have trouble saying “purple and orange”… considered about associations with your neighbor to the south perhaps? =P

Hey, I am from Fuquay Varina, and thought id leave you a little tip on where to find some cheap milkglass. I cant give up all of my good stores but a lot of the thrift stores in the area have it in abundance for a dollar or less. Guardian Angel in FV has lots of pieces, and several of the goodwills in cary and apex usually have nice pieces.

I cheated and just spray painted some patterned glass vases to fill in when I couldn’t find enough milk glass. They look exactly the same and are WAY cheaper! Goodwill and Tuesday Morning were my friends!!

That song always got in my head when it first came out!

And LOL: “I don’t really care anything about the wedding but I hate those stupid vintage cans they are too country and can’t we do something more formal and traditional”

But to be a bit more on-topic, I think centerpiece decor (vases, bowls, etc.) are some of the best ways to find bargains! Purty.

Lol @ “Hobnob pattern versus, um, some other pattern” It’s hobNAIL, girl! My mom is a vintage collector/reseller and started collecting milk glass for my wedding about a year ago.. I’m not even engaged yet, lol. Not that I’m not super excited about my milk glass collection growing in my mom’s basement!

Is it weird that I’m totally jealous you have more time until your wedding than I do?

Oh man! Anyway, awesome finds. Great work, M!

I got bit hard by the milk glass bug…I’ve gotten into the habit of going to Goodwill after work whenever I can, just to see what’s there. I’ve scored a bunch of really nice pieces for <$3.

It also helps to keep an eye on Etsy and Ebay so you know what’s a good deal and what’s not. The other day I scored a gorgeous cake plate on Etsy for a quarter of what similar items were going for on Ebay and in my neighborhood antique stores. Thrift stores are awesome, but some of the larger milkglass pieces are often really overpriced at places like Goodwill and Value Village, and can be found cheaper online or in an independent shop.

I love your dollar table finds! Also, I know several ladies who have gone ahead and painted plain glass containers white to give a milk glass look. If you’re not overly concerned with authenticity, that could be a great way to round out your collection. :)

@Jessica: I saw that too! That is such a great idea, and I love how the hive is so thrifty and crafty!

@kirabee: ROFL! I swear, I think I have been referring to it as hobknob for ONE YEAR now! How did I mess that up?!?
