Mrs. Pain au Chocolat's Picture
Mrs. Pain au Chocolat, Wilmington, DE Age and Occupation: 29, Realtor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 34, Realtor Engagement Date: November 21, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2011 Venue: Greenville Country Club About Me: An ENFJ with an artistic streak who loves backgammon, sailing, graphic design, and sleeping in. Travel (near or far), good wine, and tasty food makes my heart sing. I'm a compulsive list-maker who lives to plan and organize. Mr. P and I have lived together for 4 years, all the while renovating our city townhome bit by bit. We're planning a whimsical, Anthropologie-inspired garden wedding in June 2011.
About Mrs. Pain au Chocolat

Once we crunched some numbers, it became apparent that dream destinations like the Seychelles, the Maldives, Fiji, and French Polynesia were out. The airfare to these gorgeous spots ($1,000+ per person) coupled with 12 hours or more of flight time was a double whammy. My inner bride was bummed. In my head I’d always pictured a honeymoon at a luxurious, secluded beach retreat with fantastic food and plenty of free activities.

Refusing to scale back on the quality of the resort or length of stay, we turned to nearer beachy spots…and our travel agent. Running with a budget number supplied by Mr. P (much less than I thought we should spend), she asked what I thought of Panama. My mind was truly blank. All I could think of was, “A man, a plan, a canal—Panama??”

That night I pleaded my budget case with Mr. P. No Panama, please. But there was no way we would get anything honeymoon-worthy for seven nights including food and airfare for two! We needed to bump the budget up while simultaneously knocking the flight time down to around six hours (or within the bounds of my lovely illustration below). Losing a precious vacation day traveling = bad all around.

(getting creative with maps)

What now? We agreed to skip anywhere we’d already been—together or apart. There’re too many places to see without repeating. That ruled out Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and the British Virgin Islands (BVI). But mentioning the BVI got Mr. P reminiscing about his sailing trip there almost 15 years ago. He felt it was a beautiful destination with a reasonable travel time and close to the proposed budget. And all the things to do…

  • Sailing: Isn’t the water ridiculous?!

  • Remember this photo from the last post? It’s The Baths on Virgin Gorda, one of the biggest draws for our BVI trip!

  • Scuba/snorkeling: Can, can, can, can I go now???

Sold! We wasted no time emailing our travel agent. Up next, a handful of BVI resorts for our consideration…

(He’s gonna kill me, but the post title was inspired by Mr. P’s impromptu singing of the Beach Boys’ “Kokomo.” I pointed out that BVI is nowhere in the song; however, he did not care.)

What was your honeymoon criteria? Would you honeymoon in a location you’ve visited before?

Awesome choice! This was my vote on your honeymoon post yesterday :)

We weren’t able to take a trip immediately after the wedding. The budget, which was smallish to begin with, was taken up by the wedding/reception and the house we purchased before the wedding, and the time was constrained by my being in school. We both took 5 days off work and stayed home, went out to eat, watched movies, and planned our (hopeful) first anniversary trip!

My fiance and I had two absolute requirements in a honeymoon: 1.Carribean island, 2.somewhere where we’d need our passports. After a month of travel agent-assisted research, we decided on an all-inclusive resort in the low-rise section of Aruba!

Oooh love it! I’ve been to St. John (USVI) a bunch of times, and we’ve always rented a boat and gone to Virgin Gorda for a day. The Baths are amazing, and there are a ton of great places to snorkel. There’s also a ton of tiny islands - Cooper Island has a great restaurant, and I think it’s Peter Island with the eco-resort. Definitely rent a boat or go sailing for a couple days while you’re there to explore all the cool places!

BVIs are amazing. Virgin Gorda is just stunning. Have so much fun!! My sister and her husband haven’t stopped talking about their sailing trip around the BVIs since they went 10 years ago. Especially the Soggy Dollar Bar on Jost Van Dyke.

@MrsTimber: You must be psychic ;)
@wine_bride_2011: our travel agent really cut down on the amount of initial research I would have done. She booked our Mexico trip so she knew our taste/preferences.
@sparks: Once we book, I’m going to be so giddy-excited.
@Gerbera: backpacking in Europe sounds grand! (Yeh, Maldives… 20 year anniv destination.)
@Miss Ostrich, @Miss Elephant & @MsJeep23: Is it too soon to start bathing suit shopping??
@Miss OBG & @emma5w: Thanks for the recommendations!
@Miss Tartlet: I should have listed one of my vacation criteria as “unreal water”!
