DIY to the Power of Crazy

March 4th, 2011 @ 6:58 pm by Mrs. Cinnamon Bun

So I’m doing some DIY. We’ve got garland, napkins, pies, book centrepieces, invitation packaging, jam favours, ribbon wands and more…plus I’ve added something else to the list that I’ll be talking about in a different post!

I want to talk now about where my DIY ideas cross over into the land of crazy. Here’s something you should know about me: I knit. I don’t just knit simple scarves that take me two years to complete, I knit sweaters, socks, lace shawls. I can even spin my own yarn. I started knitting about 6 or 7 years ago, and I just love it—I’ve tried so many different crafty hobbies, but I’d always lose interest a few months after buying all the supplies. Knitting has stuck! You might even start to say I’m good at it:

Second place in the knitting section at the 2010 Calgary Stampede Western Showcase.

So here’s the thing…

Miss Lox just posted about finding the perfect pair of socks. I also want cute sock/shoe pictures of Cinnamon Buns and me. I knit socks. I have never knit Cinnamon Buns a pair of socks, because I am a selfish, selfish knitter (and my feet are always colder than his, so I need wool socks more!). Wouldn’t our wedding be the perfect occasion for me to knit him socks for? I asked what he’d want in a pair of wedding socks, and he said: “Argyle. And skulls.” I think he thought I wouldn’t be able to find a pattern. I found him choices.

Telling people I’m planning on baking my own pies for the wedding got me some ‘you crazy!!’ looks. I haven’t actually had the courage to tell anyone but my mum that I’m thinking of knitting Cinnamon Buns some wedding socks. I started thinking these thought way back in the summer, but for some reason, I haven’t acted on it. Well, I can tell you the reason: the giant time-suck that is wedding inspiration on the internet! I’ve barely knit anything since getting engaged—I spend all my spare time on my wedding projects/phone calls, or immersing myself in the world of pictures and inspiration. Not to mention writing my own blog entries! If I want Cinnamon Buns to be wearing hand-made socks on our wedding day, I better get knitting.

The other thing in cray-cray DIY land is that I kinda want to knit myself a wedding shawl. If only I’d had the forethought to choose purple as a wedding colour, I could just use the one I knit last year. That baby took me two months to knit, but I wasn’t distracted by wedding planning, and I put a lot of effort into getting it done before the submission deadline, because I knew I’d started a little late. I think I’d pick a slightly less complicated pattern for a wedding shawl, to not overpower my dress. Here are a few of the ones I’m considering (links go to Ravelry, so if you’re a knitter, you can get all the yummy pattern and yarn details):

As you can probably tell from the photos, if I made one I’d make it a rectangle shape, like a stole or a pashmina (my hugenormous purple shawl is a circle). I’m leading towards the Spider Net shawl, Twinings, or Victoria. Queen Silvia, Madli’s and Facing Lilies are gorgeous, but they all the same bobble-like stitch called a ‘nupp’. Nupps can be fiddly, and take time (not to mention that they eat up yarn!) so I think I would go nupp-less.

These are all theoretical discussions, because if I want to do both projects…I should have started months ago! I put off my shawl because I couldn’t decide if I should do it in ivory to match my dress, or teal or apple green to go with our colour scheme. Cinnamon Buns’ socks would be teal & black (I think that’s what we decided!) with the odd pop of apple green (I’m thinking maybe one of the eyepatches).

How crazy would you go for DIY? How crazy do you think I am for even still considering these projects?

Wow! You can knit socks?! That’s awesome. For spinning do you use a wheel or drop spindle?

I think both of those projects sound kick-ass and you should go for them, but only if the idea doesn’t stress you out!

Wow ! That one you won the ribbon for is beautiful!

Of the bunch of shawls you posted, I love the Twinnings one the most - so pretty! And what a great keepsake afterward, a shawl and socks would be things that could remind you everyday of your special day!

I think you are NOT crazy for wanting to knit for the wed-wed! I found that knitting my lace shawl for my wedding made me calmer.

You’re my hero. Knitting makes me cry. My mum has tried to teach me 9 times, and each time I learn, and then promptly forget. Those lace shawls are gorgeous, and I think if you want to knit one for your wedding then go for it!

Wow! Gorgeous knitting! I do NOT think you’re crazy for all the DIY - I want many projects as well. Mrs. Cardigan said something in a post about putting her heart and soul into her DIY projects, and it was a reflection of the love for her future hubby. I love that, that’s how I feel also. I think it’s cute you’re going to knit socks for your sweet. :)

I’m totally in awe that you’re able to do these things. I love the idea of making his socks, so if you have time (or think that more knitting in your life would calm you down instead of stress you out more), I think you should go for it!

Your skills are amazing! How do you enter the Calgary Stampede — I couldn’t find anything on the website (maybe it’s too early in the year yet).

My goodness you are talented! I knit and crochet, but only very simple things, and I only finish maybe half the things I start. I am easily distracted by other crafts, lol.

But! On Thursday, for my birthday Mr. Roux bought me an antique spinning wheel! So now I want to get into spinning my own yarns.

@MsJeep23: I have a spinning wheel, a Louet Little Gem. It’s been sadly neglected in the past year, even more so than my knitting has been neglected!

@Coffeecake: Here’s the website for the Western Showcase, http://westernshowcase.com/ knitting and stuff is in the ‘Creative Arts & Crafts’ section.

@Mrs. Earrings: That’s ok, the sewing machine makes me cry!

I am going to be too excited to be able to post the projects that the FH is doing. Way over the top.

I love the shawls, after the wedding you should start and etsy shop!

I knit a ton, also, but I have never done shawls or socks. I will be knitting my garter and am considering a shawl, but a simple one. Your award winning shawl is gorgeous! It looks like something by Jared Flood.

Wow. I can knit, but only square/rectangular patterns. We’re talking basic blankets and scarves here. I’m seriously impressed by your awesomeness.
