Mrs. Brooch, Arlington, VA Age and Occupation: 25, Writer/Editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Front Desk Manager Engagement Date: October 3, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Oxon Hill Manor About Me: I’m an indecisive girlie-girl with a motor mouth, can-do attitude, and knack for making others laugh. I dream of becoming a best selling novelist like Elizabeth Gilbert or Julie Powell (a girl can dream, right?), and love long road trips, a beautiful countryside, music, blogs, books, and all things vintage/thrift/antique/or homemade. I’m a Virgo, i.e. overly sensitive, emotional, and critical, and there’s no such thing as short and sweet in my world. I want to say and do it all. Mr. Brooch grounds me. I point where to go and he figures out the way. He’s a pragmatic fancy-pants who enjoys video games and movies. We both adore our mutt, Rocky, and spending time with our amazingly supportive family and friends. We’re planning a garden wedding with a formal reception with lots of whimsy and unique, Southern-inspired details.

A Suite for a Sweet Occasion

March 4th, 2011 @ 6:10 pm by Mrs. Brooch

Finish this sentence: You know you’re getting close when…

You book your suite for the night before and morning of the wedding!

Like I mentioned, the National Harbor is full of fabulous places to lodge. There’s the Gaylord National, Hampton Inn & Suites, Residence Inn Marriott, Westin, and Aloft.

At first I wanted to stay at the Gaylord. I’ve worked there and stayed in their atrium-view room dozens of times. It’s gorgeous and the all-glass exterior is breathtaking. The problem is that I don’t work there anymore and we couldn’t get an atrium-view room for less than $330 (insert sad face here).

I think it was all meant to be though, because I found something better! I checked out the Westin and they didn’t have any “suites.” They only had rooms with a view and I knew a regular size room wasn’t going to hold me and the posse! The Hampton Inn is a really nice hotel (and probably where Mr. B will stay), but it’s pretty far from the water and there aren’t any views (not going to cut it).

Then I read about Aloft—the European, clean, spacious rooms; the modern-day bar, breakfast pup, pool, and amenities. It definitely looked like a place I should check out so that’s what I did, and lookie what I found…

The perfect suite for a sweet occasion:

This spacious living room is just perfect for the morning frenzy that will be us girls getting ready. I can see us spreading makeup out all over this round table and my girls hanging out on the couch catching some morning news (checking out the weather report… hello)!

I also love that the actual bedroom is around the corner from the living area. I can retreat to my room after the rehearsal dinner and with a little privacy, hopefully catch some zzzs. I also am amazed at how large the bathroom and closets are! Great for hanging lots of dresses and accommodating lots of girls in mirrors primping themselves!

Wait…

Wait…

Are you ready for this?

There’s a balcony!!

There’s NO other hotel on the whole National Harbor with balconies overlooking the Potomac except for at Aloft! Score! This balcony is the perfect place for me and the girls to chill out the night before the wedding and gaze over the water (maybe with a few glasses of wine?). It’s going to be an amazing spot for pictures the morning of the wedding, too!

I was just there for a conference. It really was nice! I overheard someone saying that it was like being on a cruise ship, and then I looked around…a woman in a towel coming from the spa, and people sitting around a string quartet in the garden cafe.

I’m extra excited about our room because it’s free, lol. The resort we are having our wedding at gives the couple a free room with a terrace. Usually I guess couples use it for the night of the wedding but since our wedding is in the early morning we are only staying there the night before. Best part is our VIP coordinator is making sure to put the room as far away from our families as possible. I know most people would want to be closer to their family but ours is full of drama, so being alone together makes more sense for us.

Your room looks amazing! Love the views!

Oh wow! What a view indeed. I wish we had hotels with those views and stylish interiors to choose from; it’s rather “corporate” around here.

Ugh, we are having the worst time find a place to stay. We are getting married during the championship of the College World Series and the whole town is booked solid. I can only pray that all the really popular teams kind of suck this year :(
