Without Covering the Freckles

March 4th, 2011 @ 4:56 pm by Mrs. Lioness

Pale skin. Freckles. Green eyes. Red hair. It’s a tougher palette than it looks, I must say. It’s very easy to find clashing colors, sometimes too late. Additionally, fair skin takes to color much more drastically than other skin tones. This can be a good thing, but it can also lead to something overly dramatic. I wanted to use a picture of a clown with a red wig to illustrate this point, but when I Google image searched for “clown,” a lot of scary stuff popped up. I don’t want to subject y’all to that!

Instead, I’ll use this photo of Nancy from “30 Rock,” whose dream was to “open a store for red headed girls to buy cosmetics…from someone who understands.”

I’ve had my makeup done professionally, and everyone always tries to “cover up the freckles.” Those freckles are who I am! I want to look like me, just a glamorous version of me that doesn’t clash with my complexion. I know what you’re thinking…If the complexion is the problem, why not get a spray tan? Because it doesn’t look natural on me. And I don’t want to look like that redhead with the unnatural tan:

A friend of mine works as a makeup artist, and she’s offered to do my wedding day makeup as a wedding gift to me (sweet!), so I started looking for inspiration. I started looking for something fresh, natural, and a little girly.

I liked those looks, but I felt like I needed a little something more. Even though our wedding is a daytime wedding, perhaps I could pull off a little bit of the smoky eye?

Perhaps I could even pull off some red lipstick?

Mac Cosmetics apparently recommends the following eyeshadows and finishes for redheads…

…as well as their pencil, Eye Kohl, in Teddy:

I absolutely love all of those shades, but I’m not sure if they’d work with the red lipstick. Maybe I’d have to choose one over the other? What do you think?

Where my redheads at! What are you ladies doing for your wedding day makeup?

Pale skinned, freckled redhead here, and I laugh out loud every time I watch that 30 Rock episode! “Someone who understands” — so true!!

I’ve always found pulling off a red lip tricky. I tend to rock the neutral lip, smoky eye look simply because it’s easier. I definitely envy those girls who can pull it off! But we redheads are a rare breed — gotta represent!

I love your inspiration pics! I think you could totally pull off the look in the second Amy Adams photo. I was just at the Trish McEvoy counter today and she was suggesting all kinds of light foundations that I could use for the wedding that wouldn’t cover up my freckles! I totally agree, my freckles are part of who I am, and I’m not going to cover them up!

The first smokey eye shot you posted is goooorgeous!

One of my actress girl-crushes recently went redhead… she’s not naturally this color but I thought her makeup was done nicely and still went well with her new hair. (Excuse her slight crazy-eyes in this picture, she’s normally much prettier!)

I love those shades, and all of your inspiration pictures are gorgeous. Maybe those colors will look good with an amber or deep coral lipstain?
And for a little bee-inspiration, the lovely Mrs Hermit Crab! http://www.weddingbee.com/2011/02/02/lchaim-is-for-lovers-another-first-look/

“Pale skin. Freckles. Green eyes. Red hair. It’s a tougher palette than it looks, I must say.” Very true!

Discovered this post on twitter and love it! My sister and I are natural born redheads and we started a blog/website: http://howtobearedhead.com! We give recommendations, tips, secrets etc on “How To Be A Redhead”.

Really enjoyed this post! Thanks for sharing (and great pictures!)

And we believe every redhead can rock the red lipstick!

I went with a combo of MAC’s Viva Glam V lipstick and Love Nectar lustreglass - not because I didn’t think a bolder lip would go with my light skin, freckles and red hair, but because my husband likes a more neutral look :)

for the eyes, I went with a medium-toned neutral palette (a little smoky).

For foundation, I’ve had good luck for about a year with MAC’s Face & Body foundation - it’s water-based, so gives light coverage. There is enough to even everything (including my rosacea) out, without masking the freckles. A bonus is that it’s transfer resistant, so it lasts all day!

I am not a redhead, but I’ve definitely got sympathy for you! My Best friend and my fiancee are both readheads and freckly (which I think is both of their best features!), and that has made choosing a color palette for the wedding difficult.

My MOH will be doing a makeup and hair look inspired by Marcia Cross (LOVE her!): http://www.web-libre.org/medias/img/articles/2417dc8af8570f274e6775d4d60496da-2.jpg

I just watched that episode of 30 Rock last night! Love it!

And I think you’re right to want to highlight your best features! I don’t know anything about makeup, but I hope you find something that works for you!

Pale skin, blue eyes, red hair here!! I’m channeling Isla Fisher and Amy Adams for my look. I don’t like how I look with too much makeup on, so I’m going as au naturale as I can!

We’re twins! Fair skinned, freckled, green-eyed red head here! :) I can tan but I have to be careful b/c I tan quickly and orangy. Anywho - I haven’t tested my wedding-day makeup yet but I’m so excited to see what the makeup artist has in store! She says she has the perfect look….we’ll see! :)

I have pale freckled skin, but with blonde hair. I’m totally going to rock the red nail polish and red lipstick!

I can’t tan at all, but I might try just the very lightest, most subtle spray tan - and will do it at a salon, and will do a trial run first. my legs are just so SO pale, and I’m wearing a tea length dress.

Hello, I have red hair, green eyes, and a fear of MAC because I have a likely-pre-2000-based paranoia that their rainbow colors are made for brunettes with brown eyes and no pigment issues. Whatever. As a neutral-toting Bobbi Brown addict, I have no solutions, but look how pretty our fellow redhead looks!
