Mrs. Magic, Chapel Hill, NC Age and Occupation: 30, Licensed Clinical Social Worker Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Researcher Engagement Date: December 1, 2009 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Barn at Valhalla About Me: I’m a tall drink of water (5’10”!) and a Southern bride with an enormous appetite for Mexican food, good deals, anything French, and all things wedding! By day I am lucky enough to work with individuals with autism and their families. By night, I’m even luckier to be able to spend time hanging out with awesome friends, crafting, shopping, thinking about exercising, and kicking it with Mr. Magic and our two cats. I tend to have sudden, intense cravings that will not be denied (seafood enchiladas! new jeans!) and I’m prone to being a disorganized mess of anxiety and stress. After waiting (and waiting!) to get engaged, I am finally planning the colorful, fun, fabulously awesome Fall wedding of our dreams. In an effort to share the fun and craziness that is wedding planning, I’m gonna blog about it for y’all---the good, the bad, and the pretty!
About Mrs. Magic

Jumping the Shark

March 6th, 2011 @ 1:50 pm by Mrs. Magic

I think my wedding-dress search has jumped the shark. Yes, I realize that that is not proper use of the term. I don’t really understand the phrase but still use it all the time, much to Mr. Magic’s chagrin.

But you know what I mean. OK, maybe you don’t. I feel like I have viewed so many dresses online, I no longer have rational thoughts or opinions. I keep looking for something “different” and “unique” and, since the market is flooded with a gazillion sweetheart lace dresses—although they are so beautiful—I have now convinced myself that they are “trite.”

I’ve decided I need something classic yet modern, romantic, with a dose of individuality. I’ve been looking at probably 100 dresses a day but had not found anything that piqued my interest until checking out this Rivini site. (YES, it’s wayyyyyyy out of my budget, but right now we’re looking for inspiration, people…next I will Google “how to sell extraneous organs.” One search at a time.)

I think the only “unique” thing about this dress, actually, is the capelet, which is appropriate for me as Miss Magic (magicians, capes), but Mr. Magic thought it was “weird looking.” Boys. Sigh.

Have you ever been so overwhelmed by options with gowns, jewelry, flowers, linens…the cereal aisle at the grocery store…that you just “jumped the shark?” You know, in the way that I am totally misusing that expression?

Ugh, I read this at the perfect time. I’m 6 weeks away and just ordered my THIRD dress. One (that I’ve decided I don’t like) is being altered as we speak… :(
So I’m losing money on that. I am SO OVER this whole thing! I feel your pain…

Have you looked at actual dresses? I’m in Chapel Hill and am going to look at dresses at the beginning of April. I, too, am looking for the same kind of individuality as you. :)

Have you thought about Atelier Aimee? You’d still have to sell your organs, but at least if you got one of these dresses, you’d be doing it for something original, since that seems to be what you’ve been looking for.

Hee hee. I think Jumping the Shark is a hysterical expression and I think you’ve almost used it correctly… I mean it’s basically dragging something out beyond all reason (or plausible plot lines in the case of the TV show). In fact- I bet most of us (myself included) totally jumped the shark on many aspects of wedding planning…

I’ve never heard that saying before! But yep, I’ve definitely jumped the shark, too. :)

Hi, This is about honoring yourself. I live in an urban area and I can tell you that trying on dresses was not as magical as I thought it would be. I actually had a sales person say…you may not have the OMG feeling when you try on “the dress”. I thought to myself BS-I want that feeling. You are going to have to search blogs and thru all the dresses online and visit a few different shops. That is not dragging it out..it is called holding out for the one. Just like you did with your future groom. I eventually found the perfect dress-it was different. You will too.

Etsy has some gorgeous options for bolero jackets and caplets, and some seamstresses will make custom pieces. That is an affordable way to make the “standard” white dress more individualized :)

I was so overwhelmed with planning our wedding that I didn’t even buy my dress until two months before the wedding!

I just found out that my sister is holding the family wedding dress hostage, so I may need to wear a different dress, and the options are… unnerving. I no longer know what I like and what I don’t. Maybe I should wear strapless? (I hate strapless. It makes my already-long neck and thin, sloping shoulders look more Quasimodo than Esmerelda.) Maybe I should wear champagne? (I don’t look good in champagne.) I dunno.

I feel you, is what I’m saying.

I *highly* recommend reading some of the threads on this board. You are not the only one who thinks those dresses are trite! (And in 20yrs ppl will say “ohhh, sweetheart neckline ball gown, you got married in the early 2000’s didn’t you?”).

Highly recommended: http://www.indiebride.com/kvetch/index.php?t=thread&frm_id=15&S=729be574b84f827eec95ab7c14749e13

Take a break–then go try some on. You will find one that feels right. And don’t worry too much about being “unique”. It is ok to authentically be a bride of our time and wear a predominant style of today if it suits you best.

…..and 2342340987324 Bees, who have sweetheart necklined lace dresses, just simultaneously had instant attacks of insecurity upon reading this post. I foresee a flooding the boards crying “I’m now a two-dress bride!!”

haha.

(it’s okay for me to say this because I have a sweetheart necklined dress. and no, i’m not buying another dress.)

I’m actually having this problem right now with my dessert buffet I’m planning for my July ‘nupts. I need to take a deep breath and remember that I’ll make a decision when I need to.

Sorry you’re feeling overloaded! I felt the same way, that I wanted something “original”. And while I did ended up with something different, I had come to realize that that even if your dress is similar to a bunch of other people’s you’ll bring your own flair to it, and it will look unique on you!

I have a dress I am selling that looks exactly like that Rivini gown you posted. If you are interested let me know! I have it posted in classifieds but those pictures don’t show the sweetheart top I had custom made for the gown! I can send you pics if you pm me!

Dress shopping quickly turned from my most anticipated part of planning into my biggest headache. I’m sure you’re going to make a good decision. For the record, that “caplet” is Adorbs.

I don’t know if you have been to try on dresses yet, but its so so so different than looking at pictures of dresses. I surprised myself 100% by the dresses I loved on me, versus the ones that I bookmarked, printed out, and ripped out of magazines.
I get the same way though, overwhelmed with options. I have to stop myself obsessing over pictures of things, and ideas, and just go to look at them (or talk to them, whatever applies) in person to see what you really like and how you really feel.

Try and find a seamstress near you who will design (with your help) and create your dress for you. It’s fantastic to be so intimately involved, and you get a unique dress that’s “you”! I LOVED the experience! :)
