Mrs. Magic, Chapel Hill, NC Age and Occupation: 30, Licensed Clinical Social Worker Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Researcher Engagement Date: December 1, 2009 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Barn at Valhalla About Me: I’m a tall drink of water (5’10”!) and a Southern bride with an enormous appetite for Mexican food, good deals, anything French, and all things wedding! By day I am lucky enough to work with individuals with autism and their families. By night, I’m even luckier to be able to spend time hanging out with awesome friends, crafting, shopping, thinking about exercising, and kicking it with Mr. Magic and our two cats. I tend to have sudden, intense cravings that will not be denied (seafood enchiladas! new jeans!) and I’m prone to being a disorganized mess of anxiety and stress. After waiting (and waiting!) to get engaged, I am finally planning the colorful, fun, fabulously awesome Fall wedding of our dreams. In an effort to share the fun and craziness that is wedding planning, I’m gonna blog about it for y’all---the good, the bad, and the pretty!

A Song to Walk To

March 7th, 2011 @ 5:19 pm by Mrs. Magic

I’m having recurring dreams that on the day of the wedding, I realize we have no ceremony music or reception music. Then I have to call up friends in a band I know, and ask them to bring their iPods, microphones, and shaky fruit. It’s alarming.

But in real life, my latest fun obsession is thinking of music for the ceremony, especially songs to walk down the aisle to!

Contender #1:

Source

Rufus Wainwright’s “Complainte de la Butte.” It’s French (for me) and one of Mr. Magic’s fave artists! And pretty! One problem (see convo below).

Contender #2:

Any song by The Never (This is “Antarctica” live from the CD Release Show.)

Well, OK, not any song…sometimes their songs are scary (witches, bombs) or anxiety producing (”Oh anxiety, you’re mine all the time.”) But they have some pretty instrumental songs and some great lyrics. Plus, Mr. Magic and I are both HUGE fans (it is rare for our musical tastes to overlap), and they are a local band! I’m sure they will be heavily featured at some point in our wedding ceremony and reception—but not sure they have The Song for me to walk to.

See the convo me and Mr. M just had regarding this:

me: I’m gonna need The Never to write us a song for me to walk down the aisle to.

Like 30–45 seconds.

Not scary or sad.

Mr. Magic: Hahahaha.

me: I’m serious.

Something instrumental.

Mr. Magic: Not a bad idea actually.

me: Maybe this “Lonely Vampire” song would be OK.

Hee hee hee.

Some of their intros are so melancholic.

They won’t work.

Mr. Magic: True.

me: Or like, anxiety producing.

I don’t think that would be wise.

Do you think johnny would do that for us?

Or should we ask someone we know better?

Like…

Jesse!

“Hey, Jesse, can you write us a 30–40 second song that sounds like something The Never would make?”

Mr. Magic: Haha.

me: Wait wait wait.

I might have the song.

Although…

Hang on.

Damn.

Rufus Wainwright’s “Complainte De La Butte” is actually about a prostitute.

…It’s pretty, though.

Mr. Magic: Haha.

He’s really into it, despite his succinct responses!

What music will you be playing when you walk down the aisle to your future partner? And how many of you knew that song was about a prostitute? I’m thinking our guests would have no idea!

No one would know it’s about a prostitute ha. I’m doing Hallelujah Instrumental by Jeff Buckley.

my cousin walked to “black parade” by my chemical romance, but the instrumental version. it was beautiful and very few people actually knew what the title of the song was (but those of us that did thought it was kind of funny…)

It’s a beautiful song and I think it would be lovely to walk down the aisle to…although it actually wasn’t written by Rufus Wainwright (it’s from a 1950s French movie/musical). The original movie was about Can Can…and Rufus’s version appeared in Moulin Rouge (see the connection? lol)

I’m a little concerned that your friends all seem to have shakey fruit now! ;)

@Miss Lox: What, are you saying your friends don’t have shaky fruit?!?

OMG, lightbulb! What if instead of clinking glasses with a spoon for the bride and groom to kiss, guests could shake shaky fruit instead??? SO FUN.

I had no idea the song was about a prostitute! Even if someone did, the crooning in French would totally lull people into ignorant bliss. ;)

I’m avoiding ceremony music like the plague…all our favorite song are all about dysfunctional relationships which kinda doesn’t scream wedding…

I think we’re going to walk to Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Iz Kamakawiwo’ole…I love love love that song, and I just couldn’t figure out where to put it into the wedding. This seems like the perfect place! I just keep questioning if it’s too fast…

@KMA: I love that song!

@FutureMrsBPB: I like Somewhere Over the Rainbow too, although I don’t know if I know that version…I will have to check it out. I was thinking about doing a version of that song for the father-daughter dance, maybe?

@mpine: I totally love The Black Parade! I think most people wouldn’t recognize it, but I’d sure have a little giggle.

I’m walking to Forever by Ben Harper. I actually really wanted to walk to Little Wing by Jimi Hendrix, but my fiance thought that it wasn’t wedding-y enough. And I’d totally go for the Rufus Wainwright! I don’t think people will be paying too much attention to the lyrics, they will be paying attention to the beautiful bride!

We’re sticking to instrumentals thanks to our church - but there are SO many gorgeous ones to choose from!

I walked down to the acoustic version of chasing cars by snow patrol. Our guitarist did an awesome job.

BTW Totally go for the song. No one is going to know what the song is about and you can have it as an inside secret. ;)

So that’s why Rufus’s song was on the Moulin Rouge soundtrack ;-).

I did not know Rufus Wainwright, but now I do and I think this song is great! I think you should go for it, the meaning this song has for the both of you trumps the actual lyrics (in my opinion)
