About Mrs. Crepe

The Reject Pile, Part I

March 7th, 2011 @ 6:57 pm by Mrs. Crepe

I’ve written a few posts talking about the wedding day details that both Mr. Crepe and I love and are excited about. But it’s not always so easy and there are plenty of deets that were cast aside in the process. Lest all of y’all are thinking this process is cake for little Miss Crepe, I decided to share these with you.

#1: Guestbook Quilt

We haven’t figured out what to do with our guestbook but one thing’s for sure—we’re not having a guestbook quilt. This is probably my fault…I MAY have overwhelmed Mr. Crepe with the huge influx of ideas that I had at the start of this whole process. That’s my bad. When he heard that we had to cut out squares of fabric and sew them all together, he balked.

#2: Flags on Cakes

The first time I saw this photo of rustic cakes with flags on them, I was sold. How completely adorable is this photo?? When I showed this to him, I thought I was going to get a hells yes—he usually loves my quirky ideas and this wasn’t your usual flower topped cake. He paused and said, “I don’t get it. What do the flags represent? Freedom?” I was thrown by the question. What I should have said was that they represented festive partytimes. Instead, I asked what he thought should be on the cakes. “I don’t know. What about flowers?” Facepalm.

#3: Vintage Subway Posters

Mr. Crepe is a HUGE fan of McSweeney’s, which has brought the beauty of type into his life, so I thought he would love this completely unique and reusable piece of reception decor. We could fill it with quotes or special places to us and then, when the event is over, hang them in our home. I’m still not sure why he wasn’t into this idea, but after I thought about how large of a space we needed to fill, I realized this was too expensive a project to tackle.

#4: Macarons

Okay, this just about breaks my heart. Macarons are tiny cakelike cookies with a crispy outside and delicious fillings. They are so beautiful and come in a million colors and flavors! If we could get them, I’d get these bacon maple cream cheese ones. But they’re also quite pricey and too challenging a task to make them ourselves. Right now the compromise is making whoopie pies so when I make my visit to Nashville in a couple of weeks, Mr. Crepe promised me that he would help with a test batch. I suspect he is trying to trick me into giving up on cute sandwich cookies altogether by letting me wear myself out, but I will not be deterred.

#5: Vintage Stamps

Mrs. Cowboy boot did a great post on vintage stamps a couple of years ago and I’ve also seen so many people use them with amazing results on their invites. This was one of the things that I put as a MUST on my list of things to do but when I surveyed the list of projects I had given myself, I decided to give these the chop. But here are all the resources that I’ve gathered along the way so that maybe they’ll help you instead: if you want someone to match the stamps for you, here’s a great shop that sells them in color coordinated or themed groups. Also check out this post on 100 Layer Cake that tells you how to procure vintage stamps.

What are some amazing wedding ideas that you’ve had to cut out in order to stay sane?

For the longest time I, too, wanted Maracons. They didn’t make the cut, but I still love seeing photos of them! Vintage stamps were a must for me and the Mr. as well. :)

I love reading reject posts. They make me feel better about the many things we decided to nix for our own wedding! Vintage stamps were one thing we decided weren’t in the cards for us.

I was very into the make your own napkins/quilt trend. LOVED it. Got the fabric, thought about it-ditched it. My heart still breaks over that, although the ladies at the fabric store were lovely in letting me return it.

@Miss Tartlet: I know, photos of them are always so pretty!

@sarahcisme: I just wish we could include them all..

@Miss Lox: Haha I keep looking at them and wanting to buy them, all for myself..

@lolo7835: Glad to hear at least you were able to return all that fabric~ I know what you mean, it’s tough to say goodbye to some ideas..

@Miss Cotton Candy: So happy to hear that!! I told him they’d be easy but it’s going to be a little bit of convincing..

Vintage stamps! So impractical yet so appealing given the selection of current Forever stamps.

Yep. Skipping the macarons, because I can’t even find the almond flour I need for them & I refuse to waste time grinding them myself! ;)

Whoopie pies are my new favorite baked good. I can recommend the Whoopie book from Crate and Barrel. Thus far, I’ve only tried the chocolate dough and 2 of the fillings but so far so good and there are several variations of dough and filling including a maple bacon for you. I also have the baking pan and while DH loves how uniform they are in the pan, I think they are a bit too thick but that could mean I simply need to use less batter. If you are planning to make a lot and want them to be the same size, I’d get the pan too.

I love the subway text signs, and think that reusing them as decor is such a great idea. I may have to file that in our my inspiration folder (… then probably abandon it like you did, lol)

love the vintage stamp idea!
mr. c came home with holiday stmps from costco for our wedding invites - 2 days ago (i guess they were left over??). i almost had a heart attack…he has since exchanged them for the forever stamps with a bell on them. not quite bridal, but hey i can pretend it’s a wedding bell. not so much w/ the pinecone stamps.

@Lilacgal: that was also sort of on the list.. would love to make napkins but I’m not sure I’ll have the chance!

@Miss Pain au Chocolat: Sigh, so true. But we found one current stamp that sort of goes with our invites, thankful for that! It’s not a forever stamp though.. blech.

@Miss Waffle: right??????

@Miss Jaguar: Def way too much work, agreed.

@slicey19: thanks so much for this tip, I’ll look into it there! I’ll definitely want to have them the same size..

@Miss Ostrich: Haha yes..

@Mrs. Meerkat: That bench was also on the list for guestbook ideas, I loved it! But it also falls under the big project problem for us too..

@toshella: Haha someone will have to use it one day! Just maybe not us..

@Chocolatte: Ah, vintage stamps are like everyone’s almost attainable dream. You can soort of get away with the pinecones if you’re having a rustic wedding, but if you’re not, it’s a little random. The bell works!

Yummy macarons!! I also would love to have them, but my problem with them is how fast they perish!
I had my heart set on that chocolate carousel, but sigh had to let it go ;-) Along with tons of other things that simply cannot all be included!
