Shades of Gray

March 7th, 2011 @ 1:13 pm by Mrs. Magic

I mean, purple. Shades of purple.

Step into my world—but watch your step, OK? Because it’s a scattered, multitasking, colorful space filled with cat hair and caffeine. Oh, and about one million shades of purple.

Of course, I have no idea what these shades look like in actuality, since they are likely being distorted by my computer monitor, the lighting in this room, and the (hopefully) temporary insanity that is taking over my mental space.

Seriously? I just want a good fall purple. Let me know if you find it somewhere!

I TOTALLY hear you on this one. We’re using purple/aubergine/eggplant/bordeaux/plum/whatever the eff it’s called in our color palette. A few months back, I read a bride’s lament about purple difficulties, and I just assumed she was making a big deal out of nothing. UM, NO.

My strategy is to match as closely as possible, and when it’s not a perfect match, keep the purple elements far enough away from each other that no one notices. Cripes.

I had the same problem. My wedding was on Feb 19 and my favorite color is purple. My dress was ivory so i wanted a deep rich purple. my advice would be to use all of them. they all go beautifully together and it is very hard to find things in just one. i hope this helps and happy planning to you. Don’t get stressed about the colors or small stuff! Enjoy this time because the wedding will be here and over before you know it!

Any of those shades look like beautiful purples to me and all great for Fall! (I may be a little biased though because my fav color is purple , esp. the darker shades and and I’m having dark purple as one of my main colors). ;) For me…I always thought my ‘dark shade of purple’ was going to be strickly, Eggplant. But I’ve come to realize that my idea of
‘eggplant’ and others, aren’t always the same. Example: The dark purple color I went with for my BM dresses is called ‘Lapis’ and the GM vest/tie is called ‘Eggplant’, but to me they both seem the same shade…so I’m happy with that b/c it’ll still look cohesive. :)
Imo, as long as you can have a pretty good idea of what ‘your shade’ of purple is no matter what vendors call ‘your shade’ you’ll have an easier time disguishing 1 shade from the next. Good luck! :)

yeah i did the ivory/eggplant/black color scheme last year. it got to the point where i just made my own table runners because i couldn’t find ones that weren’t of the Barney persuasion.
the flowers were much easier (”black” calla lilly), and actually the cardstock wasn’t bad, they make a stardream cardstock in plum that is beautiful and affordable.
good luck, and thanks for some eye candy there!

purple=pain.

We’re doing a fall purple wedding, too. after months of searching we found a color and decided to settle on it only to find the bridesmaids dresses my MOH and I had fallen in love with didn’t come in anything close to that color. We settled for a more “berry” colored purple that the dresses come in (after a weekend of almost completely changing our color scheme out of frustration) and are learning to be happy with that.

My advice is if there’s one thing that you KNOW you want for your wedding, look and see what colors that comes in before deciding. Also, the pantone aubergine is very nice :)

I love that they distinguish between eggplant and aubergine. Because aubergine is what they call eggplants in England. (I looked it up, it’s a Catalan word.)

I am with you in spirit!! Between yarn, flowers, dresses, shoes I have fifteen million shades of purple!!! My favorite of all of them is bordeaux specifically because I think it’s better for fall than all the more purple tones. And in my experience, anything with the word bordeaux in it is going to be pretty close to the color you want. This is my strategy at least! Good luck!!!

I’m having the exact same problem. My tentative plan is to raid Home Depot and grab a bunch of purple paint swatches. Then, when we pick out BM dresses, find the paint swatch closest to the shade of dress we pick and use that for all the rest of my decisions. I’ve given up trying to pick a color based on my distorted computer monitor.

We have a plum, grey, ivory, and silver color scheme. I am saving myself a headache by not looking for perfect matches. I mean really, if anyone wants to hold 2 purple items from my wedding next to each other to see if there is a perfect match, that person has issues and should probably see a therapist. As long as all of the pieces go together and achieve the overall feel that we want, I will be a happy (and less stressed) bride. And, fwiw, the “bordeaux” color that you posted is named “plum” in my little brain. It’s a purple that leans just a little towards red. Beautiful!

Ah, purple! My second favorite color since childhood (green always won). There is NOTHING like a good purple. Hope you can find just the right shade. : )

I hear ya! But with “mocha”–my wedding cordinator keeps calling it brown and picking out brown accessories (chair sashes). My color is not chocolate brown it’s MOCHA! Even if it is hard to find the exact shade of what i want. I search and search….

Are you trying to pick which one to use? If so, I would pick “eggplant” but I do like bright things :) .

Crayola never prepared us for so many shades of color. ;) It was really helpful for us to go to a store like Lowes and pick out paint chips. Much easier than staring at the computer screen!

If you’re willing to do a mis-match theme, you could use several of the shades as your bridesmaids colors.

I am doing purple too, but for a summer wedding. I KNEW that I did not want a “grapey” purple but not a really dark purple either, I had the hardest time finding a starting point , but found my bridesmaids dresses at JCrew and ordered them on the spot…there were only 4 left, I got the last 4..; from there I just kept a small swatch of the dress in my wallet. I am not even attempting to find the same color purple, but I am happy with one that compliments it. Finding the Creamsicle Orange that will be our accent color, not that is a whole other story. Like LoveKiss said, if you are going to compare my purples to each other than you have bigger issues to deal with. :)

That’s a tough color to pin down. My only suggestion is find a paint chip you like and use it as your color guide for all decisions. It’ll help keep things somewhat consistent.

I just did this same exercise. Dessy’s concord is dark and rich. I’m in love!
