Sharp Dressed Man

March 7th, 2011 @ 3:54 pm by Mrs. Pain au Chocolat

I never realized menswear had so many nuanced variables. A suit was just a suit…and then I looked closer. Spending a solid Saturday suit shopping (excuse me while I untie my tongue) with the future mister will do that to a girl.

Going into it rather blindly, a gray, preferably slim-fit suit was my pick. He wanted ABB (anything but black) since “black is too severe and doesn’t go with [his] coloring.” Funny how this stuff comes out now. I had no clue he felt that way.

Store 1: Jos. A. Bank

Mr. P’s go-to store for work suits was a logical first stop. Here, the suits lean toward traditional fabrics and cuts. Which is fine for work, but a little too boxy for a semi-formal wedding. Winter is probably not the best time to go hunting for a summer suit, but there we were. Lots of black, brown, charcoal, and navy, but not a lot of lighter gray. Our favorite suit was this medium gray number.

Consensus: Not loving the three buttons. A slimmer fit, please. But a nice color.

While we were there, we flipped through the tuxedo-rental book. And found nothing. The chocolate brown tux that Mr. P found does NOT count. Chocolate brown plus canary yellow screams, “Hello 1970s!” Why don’t we throw in avocado accents while we’re at it?

Store 2: Men’s Wearhouse

What they had was decent stuff at a decent price. But the selection of gray suits was limited. Even more so in his common jacket size. Mr. P tried on maybe five. It was encouraging to find slimmer fits and skinnier lapels. Their rental book has 90% of the same inventory; nothing interested us.

(Brian showing off the “butt flap” or side-vent jacket.) Consensus: Closer, but missing the style mark. And still too boxy.

Store 3: Macy’s

By this time, I had warmed up to the idea of a non-gray suit. But no black or khaki. Which pretty much left navy. So we’d narrowed it down to a gray or navy two-button slim-fit suit, with or without narrow pinstripes. First up, a solid navy suit that really impressed!

Hot damn! Love the fit and color of this suit. Then he tried on a similar gray pinstripe suit (same designer)…also veeeeddy niiiiice.

“How much is this one??” & Me, sounding like a myna bird: “Hold still! Your arms are blurry.” Consensus: Good selection, lots of slim-fit suits. Macy’s—you made my man look good! We shall return.

What is your guy wearing? Was suit shopping a joint venture?

We ended up with a Jos A Bank signature suit. They gave us an INCREDIBLE price because we bought for all five guys at once (groom plus four GM’s). Of course, they don’t exactly have the best track record for keeping tabs on your order. You have to REALLY watch them.

But the suits really are fantastic.

We actually wen with Jos A Bank Summer suit in Tan. Hopefully they will turn out nice. We did get a great deal from them, buy one at full price and get two for free type of deal.

The last suit, at least the jacket, looks fabulous!

Mr Timber wore a summer-weight wool, Italian made suit given to him a few years ago. He took the money he would have spent on a new suit (actually a fraction of that) and paid to have it custom-fitted. The result was gorgeous and he looked incredible :)

we’re going the indochino.com route. we haven’t tried their site yet but it seems to have great reviews and it’s the most affordable made to measure suit. fingers crossed!

That navy suit looks like it was made to measure! It fits so well across his shoulders. :) We’re also going the Indochino route because Mr. T’s very particular about what he wants. After weekends of suit hunting it seemed to be our only option for acquiring a charcoal grey, slim-fit, three piece suit!

We went the indochino route for my fiance who is impossible to fit. Also where we’re from, apparently no stores carry slim fit suits and he has to have a custom suit anyway, so we waited until there was a good sale going on and bought his suit there. We went with the metallic gray suit, a custom white shirt, and black skinny tie all for under $650. He loved that he even got to pick the color for the jacket lining, as well as having the jacket and shirt personally monogrammed. The suit came in and only needed minor alteration (around the back of the neck, which they don’t have a measurement for) but they reimburse you for up to $75 worth of alterations within 30 days. You can also get a complete re-cut within 2 weeks if something goes horribly wrong, but the measurements are reallly specific so that seems unlikely. We had a great experience with indochino and I can’t recommend them enough. We’ve also been told by a custom tailor that the suits are great quality, so that’s a bonus.

I would would love for my Fiance to get a new suit and wear that for the wedding.

Where I”m getting stuck is what are you going to have the groomsmen wearing? I can’t expect them all to buy a new suit, and most likely Men’s Warehouse won’t have something that looks the same for them to rent.

Ah, those macy’s suits look terrific on Mr. PC. Mr. O and I shopped together for his pale gray J Crew slim cotton suit too. :)

I am a menswear designer, so FI will be getting a new suit. With my discount, it will be cheaper than renting.

My FI is being a pain with looking for a suit, in that he has no interest in doing it yet (we are 67 days out). So far once I got him to look when he walked through JCP at a mall. On that trip he found he needs a long (big surprise he’s 6′6″) and that he hates the 2 button look on his frame. So he wants at least a 3 button if not 4 button suit. I have been researching them online but its hard to find those kind of suits in his size and in our price range.

We don’t have a Macy’s, Men’s Warehouse or Joseph A Banks within 2 hours so we haven’t been able to look there yet. He says when we go near one when we have our wedding shower on the 19th we can stop in to look. If he had it his way I think he’d wait till the week before, ahhhh……

@SUITS! & @iRun2004: We ended up finding a Jos. A Bank suit a month later.
@Ms. Sparkles: Mr. P’s superb suit guy at Jos. A Bank said they wouldn’t get many more suits in for the summer season. A part of me was bummed we were deciding before seersucker season but Mr. P would never go for it.
@MrsTimber: Smart move. It’s all about the tailoring!
@Miss Tamago, @Miss Tartlet & @Kinsey123: This is the first I’ve heard of indochino.com! Passing this along to the future mister. Thanks ladies!
@srobinson: That was one of the early issues we weighed. Lots of back and forth. We decided to purchase Mr. P’s suit and the groomsmen could rent or wear their own in the same color. I was fine if they were slightly mis-matched. What ended up happening was completely unexpected — they all bought the same suit as Mr. P! Apparently everyone needed a new suit.
@C: Tommy Hilfiger at Macy’s. I LOVED both of them. And that was the suit that turned me onto the idea of a navy suit.
@Miss Ostrich: Oooo, J Crew! I asked Mr. P to consider them but I think it was a combination of going outside of his normal store (Jos A Bank) and fashion comfort level. That’s why I could never get him in seersucker.

@Ambellina13: That’s a steal! We bought instead of renting when we realized how close the prices with sale discounts.
@beautifulkastrofie: Maybe try indochino like the other bees suggested? Most men really could avoid clothes shopping for the rest of their lives and be content.

We found a dark gray suit at Syms. He was torn between charcoal gray and a lighter gray, but since this will literally be the second suit he owns (and he doesn’t really like the first one), I figured he should have a suit that’s more versatile. Medium gray isn’t really a great color for winter, and if he’s gonna get a nice suit for our wedding when he only needs one a few times a year, it made sense to get a winter-appropriate one. Honestly, he tried on 3 suits and fell in love. Best part is, he was going to need the pants let out by an inch (a month ago), but when he went for the alterations appointment, the waist fit perfectly!

“Sometimes the top, always the middle and never the bottom…”. That refers to the buttons.
One should never button the lowest one, so for a two-button-suit only the top is buttoned.
A bit sartorialelitistic perhaps, but it looks so much better!
