Mrs. Brooch's Picture
Mrs. Brooch, Arlington, VA Age and Occupation: 25, Writer/Editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Front Desk Manager Engagement Date: October 3, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Oxon Hill Manor About Me: I’m an indecisive girlie-girl with a motor mouth, can-do attitude, and knack for making others laugh. I dream of becoming a best selling novelist like Elizabeth Gilbert or Julie Powell (a girl can dream, right?), and love long road trips, a beautiful countryside, music, blogs, books, and all things vintage/thrift/antique/or homemade. I’m a Virgo, i.e. overly sensitive, emotional, and critical, and there’s no such thing as short and sweet in my world. I want to say and do it all. Mr. Brooch grounds me. I point where to go and he figures out the way. He’s a pragmatic fancy-pants who enjoys video games and movies. We both adore our mutt, Rocky, and spending time with our amazingly supportive family and friends. We’re planning a garden wedding with a formal reception with lots of whimsy and unique, Southern-inspired details.
About Mrs. Brooch

Just a few short weeks after I was engaged my step mom came to me and said, “make sure you get a videographer!” At the time, I was so hung up on finding a venue, a dress, and making sure we had a planner, I forgot all about her advice.

It didn’t dawn on me that we didn’t have a videography until most of our budget was gone.

#shit

I’m not going to lie. I got pretty upset. I felt like all of our hard work choosing other vendors would go to waste if we didn’t have someone there to capture the day on film. I talked with Mr. B about it and looked over our budget dozens of time trying to make room for the impossible. Meanwhile, I was torturing myself with videos like this one.

Then I figured out that our photographer, Meredith Perdue had a sister also in the business of making couples’ wedding day dreams come true!! Meet Mackenzie and her hubby, founders of Inkspot Crow Films.

I know this is pretty lame and I’m pouring salt on an open wound, but I couldn’t help but share the videographers we would be hiring if it was in our budget! I’m hoping that some of you who are still in the early stages of planning will learn from my mistake and book early!

The first video by Inkspot Crow made me really wish we would have planned better. I absolutely love the high energy and the way the beat of the song synchronized with the movements of the bride and groom. That’s so cool! I’m smitten with the song choice, too.  You’re a Wonderful One by Marvin Gaye is certainly a Brooch favorite…

Seriously, I melt!

Mark & Christina : the celebration from Inkspot Crow Films on Vimeo.

Annnnd as if that one video wasn’t enough, I love this one, too:

Samantha & James : the ceremony from Inkspot Crow Films on Vimeo.

Clearly, they know good music! God Only Knows by the Beach Boys…yes, please!

Sigh.

Maybe in another life, or maybe for one of you brides? If you book with Inkspot Crow will you call me up or shoot me an email and share your lovely video? I think we’re going with flip cams, but I can live vicariously!

Are you hiring a videographer? Do you have a favorite?

Sheesh, I’m still smarting from a videographer telling me I was ridiculous when I told her how much I wanted to spend. It’s one of the few times in my life I wished I was talking to someone on an office phone so I could bang it in her ears. Yeah, the videographers I’m seeing are about $2000 for the really good ones. Ugh, that’s what I want to spend on photography. I doubt I’d look at my video. I feel your pain though. I die when I look, at some videos on vimeo!

You know, we didn’t have a videographer and I honestly don’t regret it…I’m sure it would’ve been nice but I don’t think it’s necessary! You’ll have the photos, for me that was enough…

i wasn’t going to do videography at all, but then went with the smallest package because i could add a webcast and we had lots of family watch from home! so that was good. we will get a dvd of the ceremony - i’m glad now because i couldn’t hear or take in any of that stuff when it was happening!!

that said, the majority of wedding stuff is kinda cheesy and i am so glad we’ve got so many great still pictures and artsy fartsy shots to enjoy! plus i can ditch the unflattering shots and with video, i cringe to think how much i will hate how i look!

We can’t afford videography either. So we bought a Sanyo HD video camera on Amazon for $130, plus a 3 year warranty with accidental damage for another $20. Then we found out the batteries don’t last long, so we got a 2 pack on Amazon for another $20. We are going to stick it on a tripod for the ceremony and then have someone in charge of changing the batteries. At the reception one of my brothers is going to use it to tape our first dances, then it will probably end up on a tripod again. Maybe other people will use it too, who knows.

We were going to get a flip cam but the max recording is only 2 hours. With the video camera we got a 16 gig SD card that will shoot 10 hours, and with the extra batteries one can always be charging so we’ll get a lot more footage.

We’re still sad we won’t have a professional video but my FI will have fun editing the video himself. In the end we are glad we have some kind of option.

My sister had a video and i love it! its amazing. and we do watch it, its really nice in the years since then too look back at the kids in it and they are now in college. it brings you back to the laughter that you can hear not just see in pictures its hearing my grandfather say the blessing, watching me choke up giving my speech. I am def working this in to my budget, the good thing is my FI and 100% in agreement with me on this (hey he even got our engagement on video!)
I love these videos! and the songs gave me some great ideas!!!

You have incredible photographers, and I’m sure they’ll capture the beautiful details and moments of your wedding! If you’re still searching for videographers, have you looked into local film schools? Maybe they can at least send you in a direction based on your budget!

“We’ve only watched our video once” is what people who can’t afford a videographer keep telling themselves to make them feel better about not having video.

It’s not cheap but I don’t know when the next time we’ll have everyone under the same roof at once. We aren’t both from the same state and we don’t live a few blocks from our families and our parents aren’t getting younger.

Document it…anyhow, anyway. We found someone to do it for a steal and luckily my best male friend is an amazing editor so we’ll have our cheeseball, highlight reel with music too.

I’m sorry I don’t live closer because I would jump over and record the whole thing for you on my (not-very-high-tech-but-still-makes-videos) video camera! Have you looked on craigslist? I honestly don’t think you’ll miss not having one, because you’re going to have so many fab photos!!

I found myself in a similar predicament, and my solution was to look on craigslist for a videographer who needed to build his/her portfolio - and I found one for $500. We were able to view some of his work and decide that he is aiming for the style we like, just still strengthening his skills and getting more weddings under his belt. In the end, we aren’t sure how much we will watch our video - but I decided I’d like to be able to send copies to a few special family members who won’t be able to make the trip. Good luck!

We could not afford a videographer either until we found a FREE one on craigslist. he does videos, has a nice camera and wanted to break into the buisness. We figured the worst case scenario would be that we end up with a crappy video…but a video all the same.

Check the classifieds and you might end up with something like this http://vimeo.com/13903051 for cheap…or even free :)

Not to further add salt to the wound…but i watch the video WAY more then any of the pics! :p

We didnt have a videographer either. Ive had my moments of regrets (like seeing amazing wedding videos or wishing we had someone just record the ceremony) but you know what - youll get over it. THe pictures are so much to illicit emotion and it becomes less and less of a big deal as time goes on.

You are going to have GREAT pics though, B. It sucks not having videography - especially seeing how many great clips are being edited out there now. xx

Have you thought about hiring a film school student?
I’m having my brother do my wedding video. He’s a few classes short of graduating from film school.
Does he have a lot of wedding videography experience?
No, but he knows a lot more about cameras , composition, sound, editing etc than the average person!
And I think his plus one will be a friend from film school to help him out.
