Mrs. Sparkler's Picture
Mrs. Sparkler, Chicago Age and Occupation: 27, Communications Aficionado Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Publisher Engagement Date: July 21, 2010 Wedding Date: September 2011 Venue: Chicago Illuminating Company About Me: I’m a Southern lady living in the big city of Chicago. Well, lady may be a stretch, but I’m working hard to keep some Virginia charm in our sleek, urban, wedding-palooza! I’m addicted to marathons, not-so-famous bands, Chicago restaurants, and Mark Twain. I cry during SPCA commercials, and I think LOST was the best show to ever hit television. Mr. S and I met at a classy college mixer and, 7 years later, he’s still by my side. He’s the only child, laid back, free spirit... I’m the oldest of five kids, type-A, organizer. It doesn’t work on paper, but we’ve never paid attention to that stuff anyway. Somehow it works. And like they say, sometimes when you know…you just know.
About Mrs. Sparkler

(I promise I will explain that title. Really, there is a point to it. I swear.)

When I last left you, I was feeling pretty anxious about finding a place for our ceremony and reception. My anxiety only increased as we went from appointment to appointment, touring each prospective venue. Nothing seemed to fit quite right. Prairie Productions and Ravenswood Event Center ended up being too small, Architectural Artifacts had no AC (risky for an early September wedding), and River East Art Center was waaay expensive. It eventually came down to Gallery 1028 and Chicago Illuminating Company (CIC).

I was very impressed with Gallery 1028. The space was unique and the ladies who work there were ridiculously nice. But I could tell Sparks wasn’t feeling it. When I asked him what he thought, he only responded with a noise that sounded sort of like, “Meh.” So we crossed that one off and moved on to CIC.

With only one place left on our list, I was starting to feel anxious and on the verge of tears. My mind was going a million miles a minute trying to come up with other options and different places we could look at. What would we do if everything booked up? I felt as if I was in a race against all the other Chicago brides. When we pulled up to CIC, I had basically given up all hope…until we walked in the door.

You guys, it was perfect.

It was so perfect, in fact, that I was unable to hold back my tears any longer. I was starting to go a little nutso. As we ventured farther inside, I managed to compose myself and act like a normal human being. Sparks and I exchanged excited glances as the event coordinator showed us around the building. We knew this was it. But I didn’t get my hopes up. I knew the chances of our date being open were slim to none. I braced myself as Sparks asked the coordinator about availability.

“Oh sure,” she said, “We have that date available. I’ll put a hold on it for you.”

Whaaaaa??? Did you just make my wedding dreams come true, event coordinator? I was so excited I could have hugged her. Or barfed. Thankfully I did neither, and two weeks later we paid our deposit and CIC was ours. I still can’t believe we booked it. I could sit and daydream about that space all day. Sigh.

Oh sorry, do you wanna see? IN. LOVE.

In the interest of full disclosure, I call them sometimes just to confirm that they really have us scheduled for our date. I’m psychotic. And excited. Bah! Wedding chore numero uno = finished!!!

When did you find your venue? Did you have a big list like we did? Or did you always know where you wanted to be?

Right, right…Chick-fil-A. I’m gonna explain that…in the next post!

Your venue drips total awesomeness! You are going to have a great time planning the rest of your wedding and reception around the look and the details of CIC.

We found our venue right away. Or, rather, I found it, asked Mr his thoughts, and he vetoed any other potential sites because he LOVED Weller’s Carriage House.

gorgeous!! we found ours a second time by accident lol. i had gotten tickets to a bridal show then my mom passed away and i hated the though of weddings. the bridal show came around and my friend dragged me to it saying ill have fun. i walked in mad that i was there (i had been trying to convince FI just to take me to a court house) we were walking around and my daughter , who can spot candy from a mile away, say a candy buffet so we decided to meander over and grab a snack. while i was standing there a lady from the resort near my house started asking me questions and i pormptly told her a wedding was not in our budget now and we were going to elope. she asked how much a trip to vegas would cost with hotel, wedding and the works. i said about a grand. she said what if she could book me in her venue for the same price? deal!!! so we went to look at the venue and it was beautiful! i was so excited i came home and told fi that i found our venue and we were paying for it and he would love it. i dragged him there for dinner one night and let him meander and he really liked it! after that i rolled back into wedding mode in full force!

Loves. Very urban contemporary.

I fell in love with our venue right away and it was an eeenormous sigh of relief. Knowing the date and location was huge.

We saw another venue and I was very eh on it, especially since it cost tons more.

I love your venue! If I live in Chicago, I would totally steal that idea. :)

Similar to you, we walked it to our venue, a fluke bc we didn’t like it online but decided to check it out anyways bc it fits the number of guest we had in mine. We went and it was perfect for us. We were quite happy. :) We got that last date available for May.

Love the venue! Its gorgeous!! And as someone who sees psychotic patients all the time in her line of work (clinical psychology), I’d say that bridal delusions are inevitable while planning a wedding! (And yes, I have totally called vendors twice just to make sure nothing changed from the day before)..interested to hear about chick-fil-a soon!

What a beautiful venue!!! So happy y’all were able to find the perfect place! When the future Mister and I walked into our venue (which was the first place we looked!) we knew we were supposed to get married there. It was exactly the big southern antebellum home we wanted. We didn’t even want to look anywhere else, but we had appointments set up. But at the end of our other tours we knew we had to go back and pay our deposit at the first place.

That is beautiful.

FYI that is so mean mentioning chick fil a when there are people out there who have to go to another state to get some. :(

I am also considering CIC, Gallery 1028, and River East (among some other options) for a wedding next year. When you said River East was way too expensive, were you just referring to the rental fee (w/ or w/o the outdoor space at CIC), or the required vendors, etc? It didn’t seem to me that the cost was that different between CIC and River East; that may just be because I’m looking at summer dates, but I’m hoping you’ll tell me about something I’m missing that makes CIC way cheaper. :) I’d love to hear more of your thoughts on it since cost is a big issue for us. Congrats on finding an awesome space!
