Mrs. Magic, Chapel Hill, NC Age and Occupation: 30, Licensed Clinical Social Worker Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Researcher Engagement Date: December 1, 2009 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Barn at Valhalla About Me: I’m a tall drink of water (5’10”!) and a Southern bride with an enormous appetite for Mexican food, good deals, anything French, and all things wedding! By day I am lucky enough to work with individuals with autism and their families. By night, I’m even luckier to be able to spend time hanging out with awesome friends, crafting, shopping, thinking about exercising, and kicking it with Mr. Magic and our two cats. I tend to have sudden, intense cravings that will not be denied (seafood enchiladas! new jeans!) and I’m prone to being a disorganized mess of anxiety and stress. After waiting (and waiting!) to get engaged, I am finally planning the colorful, fun, fabulously awesome Fall wedding of our dreams. In an effort to share the fun and craziness that is wedding planning, I’m gonna blog about it for y’all---the good, the bad, and the pretty!

Like that, see?

Oh, OK, you wanna know what I made out of nothing? Here it is…

I know. Your mouth is hanging all agape at this lovely paper box. *shrugs* When you’ve got talent, you’ve got it, and when you don’t, you don’t!

How on earth did I make such a lovely and useful box, you ask (with shock and awe, of course)? Well, I’ll tell you.

First, I asked for, and thereafter received, this.

My FMIL gave it to me for Christmas! It’s gorgeous, plus on the back of each page is a template for a craft, so a beautiful and talented crafter can reuse the page and make something out of it! Yes, like this box!

It IS very green of me, isn’t it? Thanks for noticing. And for those of you doubters who allege that I didn’t make it out of nothing, that I made it out of something that came with directions and dotted lines on which to cut…well, it’s really all semantics, isn’t it?

Moving on.

First, set up your work station.

Use a tiny work space and make sure you have a Sun Drop to drink (OK, or your fave form of caffeine) and some Gilmore Girls playing in the background.

Oh, also, get a bone folder and a ruler. They look like this, in case you don’t know what a bone folder is (haha, and if you don’t, you must be a real DIY LOSER*!)

Making Something Out of Nothing... : wedding chapel hill diy Img 06303

*This was my first time using a bone folder, so really I’m just projecting my own DIY-loser insecurities. At least I recognize these Freudian defense mechanisms that crop up in my crafting.

Then cut on the lines that indicate cutting. It’ll look something like this…

Next, complain about the lack of work space. Procrastinate and watch a full episode of Gilmore Girls (bonus points if you know what season or episode was shown previously!). Yell at Mr. Magic, “Are you ever going to pick up that free and awesome desk with the large, flat work space, for God’s sake?”

Finally, use the bone folder and ruler to make fold-y line thingies. They will make the box fold up nicely.

Lastly, fold the box into a box. Sadly, I must admit that this took QUITE awhile. I have no idea why. I’m gonna blame it on the Sun Drop—too much caffeine!

And yes, alternate titles for this post included “Making a Mountain Out of a Molehill” and “Bone-Folder Virgin No More” and, probably most appropriately, “Why I Need a New Spacious Work Space.” Also, I am still not certain I am using this bone-folder thingy correctly. I mean, what exactly am I supposed to do with this apparently very important tool that I never knew I needed until I got engaged?!?

What do you do your crafting on? Has any seemingly easy project stumped you? And most importantly, what the heck do you do with a bone folder?

I’m pretty sure that’s a first season episode. Dean sitting in Rory and Lorelai’s living room, perhaps? I don’t think he wore the leather jacket much past season one, so that’s my reasoning.

I may have an unhealthy obsession with Gilmore Girls.

I had never heard of a bone folder before getting engaged! I don’t think I’ll even buy or use one myself. I must be a total DIY loser.

Yeah, I’m also going to guess that it is a first-season Girlmore Girls episode, maybe the one where he comes over for the first time to watch Willy Wonka?? I just don’t remember him sitting on Lorilei’s couch all that much.

@Steph, if they ever come out with a GG Scene-It, I will have you over for coffee, chinese food, pizza and all things GG :D

And that box is awesome, very cute and very green of you! :)

Very cute box! And a bone folder is for making prettier/neater creases than your thumbnail can make. You could do this without it but the edges might get wrinkly and scrunched.

Very cute! I actually lost my bone folder and was hating life while i was assembling our Save the Dates. They come in pretty handy when you want to make sharp creases or apply pressure to glue.

So here is my question ladies…do you use the bone folder’s pointy edge to trace or score the line/seam where there will be a fold…or do you fold and then run the bone folder down the folded side to make it flat and sharp? Do you ever use the pointy part of it? Why is it called a bone folder? I suppose I could google all this, huh….

@Miss Magic: I’m pretty sure they’re made of bone, or at least the original ones were, so that’s why it is called that. I have one, but it is hard plastic.

You can use it for both scoring and flattening the fold. Run it along the paper where you want it to fold, just like you would an xacto knife - use a ruler to make sure you’re not wobbling everywhere! This is where you’re using the point.

Then fold on the line you just scored, and flatten/press the fold down with your bone folder. Nice, neat folds!

LOL I love how setting up your work station includes the Gilmore Girls. I totally do the same thing but with Supernatural. :-P
