Let Me See You One-Two Step

March 8th, 2011 @ 2:53 pm by Mrs. Ostrich

“Dancing with the feet is one thing, but dancing with the heart is another.”

Hi.

My Name is Miss Ostrich.

And I. LOVE. TO. DANCE.

I’ve been bogeying since the tender age of two, when my mom enrolled me in my very first ballet, tap and jazz classes. Then, in high school and college, I shook my thang as the captain of my hip hop dance teams. And now, many moons later, I take hip hop dance classes once or twice a week and participate in a dance showcase in the spring.

The Running Man. Cabbage Patch. Superman. Dougie. Pirouette. Jeté. Step-Ball-Change. Cha-Cha. Waltz. These are just some of the moves I tend to bust out on the dance floor. Where you at, Honey Daniels???

And as if that wasn’t enough…my step dad was a Latin ballroom dancing champion in the Philippines and was my mom’s dance instructor—that’s how they fell in love. :)

So my mad love to bust-a-move and dance heritage begs the question: what are we gonna do for our first dance?

Well, let’s take a stroll down the wedding dance hall of fame for a little inspiration, shall we? These are a few of the most awesome wedding dance routines I’ve ever seen!

1. JK WEDDING ENTRANCE DANCE:

Chris Brown’s “Forever” + awesome dance moves = an epic wedding processional. I mean, you KNOW you’re fan-freakin’-tastic if it makes a cameo at Jim & Pam’s wedding:

2. DIRTY DANCING UK - Julia and James’ First Dance:

Mad props to this terrific UK couple who taught themselves the unforgettable “Dirty Dancing” finale. Um, you’re my heroes. If I was at a wedding at this happened, I would’ve gone BANANAS.

3. BEST FIRST DANCE BRUBAKER:

The wedding first dance is taken to a whole new level with this now-classic wedding YouTube video. I mean, if you got it…flaunt it!

4. BEST FIRST DANCE EVER:

I love the jive. It’s such a happy, infectious dance and this couple knocked my socks off with their wedding jive. Note to self: bribe Mr. O into some jive dance classes. :)

5. RINA & NICK’S WEDDING - CRAZY FIRST DANCE:

From Brian McKnight to Gnarles Barkley, this couple showcased some fist pump worthy moves - Nick the groom busted out steps that MJ would be proud of!

As for the Ostrich duo, as of now we have not learned any sort of crazy choreography for our first dance…yet. Mr. O, who is not a trained dancer like yours truly but definitely impresses me on the dance floor, is kind of leaning toward the idea of having my step dad teach us a routine, but we’ll see. One thing I know for sure, though - choreography or not, we’ll be pullin’ out ALL the stops once the dance party starts…“Go Ostrich! It’s yo’ wedding!”

*High Five* hive! You made it through my loooong dance post. Did ya have fun? Are you still dancing in your seat? Did it inspire you to learn your own wedding dance routine? Which wedding dance video is your favorite?

I love them all! Especially the videos where the brides and grooms are so obviously having a great time dancing :)

Our first dance was a swing to “In the Mood.” Mr was nervous (he had never taken formal dance lessons before and I, to lesser extent than you, had taken them my whole life and love to boogie) but he had so much fun showing off his newly-learned moves :)

I love watching videos like this. The last one was by far my favorite.
We’re going to take a couple classes once our wedding gets closer because as it is now, FI is content with doing the “awkward sway until someone else joins us so we aren’t doing it alone” He’s not a big dancer. yet.

Haha. I also really like the last one. And I’m glad the bride didn’t have a wardrobe malfunction! I was getting nervous watching her pull her dress every 15 seconds. I would love to do this, but I’m totally not a dancer!

I’m running for the walls on the edge of the room. Dancing is the only thing that I have inhibitions about. It doesn’t help that Mr. P busts out some interesting moves and my only response is to stand there, looking at him like he’s crazy.

I will say that swing video was one of the best swing first dance videos I’ve seen. (Though FH commented “We’re going to blow the rest out of the water”- really modest, right?)
Good Charleston in there, unfortunately I was horribly lost with that slow footwork (FH diagnosed it as Dean Collins/Hollywood Swivels done at 1/4 speed?)

That last dance was hilarious!
(Hollywood tape might have been a good idea for the last two brides?)

What great inspiration videos, I loved them!! My favorite hands down is the JK wedding entrance, but that’s more for the originality and sweetness of the idea. The most impressive first dance was, for me, the jive: WOW those two can move!
Mr. C and I are also learning those same moves - we have now learned the beauty of one jive step. Don’t think we’ll make much progress from that, so our first dance will be very classic (but that alone will be an achievement for us!)
Can’t wait to see your video!!

Loved this post!! I was just in my cousins wedding and we danced back down the aisle, to the Black Eyed Peas version of Time of My Life, it was awesome and the guests were so surprised!

That jive video has me seriously rethinking one of our dances! My fave of the bunch has to be the last video for those two adorable kids jumping around in the background. ;)

This was probably the ONE wedding detail I didn’t do, but I WISH I followed through with. I think I forced my husband to watch all of these (and more…there another great MJ one on youtube), but we never got our act together to plan a fun and surprising dance! I hope you do it!!

Oh…Em..Gee!!!!!!! This post was epic!

I loved them all. I think my fave is the jive for the amount of skill shown. But ‘I like big butts’ was full of personality. Tough call.

I can’t wait to see what you do for your first dance!
