I love all things design, sewing, flea markets, and a good book. I’ve been known to swoon over a well-designed chair and often find myself craving a new addition to my chair collection regardless of the lack square footage in our home. I’m Mexican American girl who hates all things spicy but loves her rowdy Mexican family and her Latin roots. Dressing My Wobbly Bits

March 8th, 2011 @ 3:15 pm by Mrs. Cotton Candy

Shopping for a wedding dress when you’re a big girl sucks. Most dress boutiques carry few to no dresses in extended sizes, and the dresses they do carry seem to be copies of the same strapless, modified A-line dresses with ruching and, if they’re fancy, a sprinkle of beading. No offense to the brides with ruched, strapless, modified A-line dresses. There’s a reason why these dresses are so popular—they fit and flatter everyone. But this is not my idea of a dream gown.

Given the choice between dress shopping and a root canal, I would choose a root canal every time. Fortunately, the one thing I fear more than dress shopping is walking down the aisle in my skivvies, so as our wedding day grew closer I knew that it was do or die time and I had face my fear and find a dress. After some research, I was able to locate two bridal boutiques that carried samples in plus sizes. Both happened to be located in the Orange County area within a few miles of each other, so Bridesmaid SD and I decided to make a day of it and hit up both.

Unfortunately, I don’t have any pictures or dresses to share with you from our day out, which goes to show you how underwhelmed I was with our shopping experience. While both Mon Amie Bridal and Ferndales had a large selection of dresses to choose from, the dresses themselves were either just OK or so far over my budget that it wouldn’t matter if they were in a size I could try on because there was no way I could afford them.

I also found myself getting slightly annoyed with the fact that the stores were set up in a way that the plus-size gowns were segregated from all of the “regular” dresses. This practice shouldn’t have really surprised me, though, because isn’t this the same industry that has brought us such TV magic as Say Yes to the Dress: Big Bliss? Because, you know, big girls can’t be featured shopping for dresses amongst their petite counterparts.

I understand that separating the large dresses makes shopping the racks easier and more comfortable for some brides, but for me having to walk through racks and racks of beautiful sample-size gowns to reach the couple of racks of plus-size dresses in the back of the store left me feeling more self-conscious than shopping amongst the so called “normal sized” brides ever would.

Needless to say, I did not buy a dress that day, and actually to this day I still don’t have one. After talking to my mom and detailing our day of shopping, she asked why I hadn’t considered having my dress made. This was a total forehead-slapping moment for me! My mom made my prom dress in high school, and it fit perfectly and flattered me in a way that no dress in the stores ever did back then, so why wouldn’t I go the same route for one the most memorable dress of my life? Decision made! My mom and I will be working with a seamstress friend of hers to design and construct my wedding dress. It will be 100% custom and flatter me in a way no other dress off the rack will, and I won’t have to stick to the big-girl section of the store to get it!

Oh yay! I am glad that you were able to find a solution to your dress dilemma. I think you will look lovely no matter who makes your gown and best of all you don’t have to worry about seeing another bride in it. :-)

I love that you get to have a custom gown! My experience was very similar to yours actually so I know exactly how you feel. I got a dress at Running of the Brides on the cheap and now I’m planning on altering it with a local seamstress to make it all my own. My first fitting is this Saturday and I’m super excited/anxious for it! Can’t wait to see what your gown ends up looking like!

Glad to hear I’m not the only one who think Big Bliss is offensive. I still don’t know what to say about this to express my disbelief.

Can’t wait to see what you pick. I’m sure you’ll look amazing.

So I totally hear you. My worries about dress shopping as a plus size were totally confounded when the first store ONLY wanted me to try on a-line and strapless. Uh, no. I hated it too.

Have you researched any rent-a-gown seamstresses (I don’t know if this is actually what they’re called)? This may be more popular in the south where pageants and quinceaneras are more abundant, but when I did my quinceanera, I had to wear a bridal-type dress, and since I’m a big girl and I was only 15 at the time, buying a dress from a store would have been nearly impossible/inappropriate for my age. So I designed my own gown, went to a seamstress in Miami, and she made my dress for a discounted price, under the condition that I return the dress to her so she could rent it out/re-sell it to another girl. It’s a great idea if you never plan on re-wearing or re-using your dress after your wedding. My dress cost me less than $1000, it was gorgeous and exactly what I wanted. I’m sure some other girl got a lot of joy out of wearing it after I did.

I cannot possibly state how wholeheartedly I agree with you. I find “Big Bliss” to be not only poorly named but entirely offensive. And I refuse to watch it, DVR it, or otherwise acknowledge its existence other than to say how much I dislike it. Hmph.

i am right on that cusp (cuvy, busty, whatever you want to call it) and when we went gown shopping my consultant refused to let me try on non-plus sized dresses. *really* ticked me off. i didn’t end up buying a dress there.
i did however end up buying a “women’s” sized gown that is being cut down to flatter all my wobbly bits from another store.

good for you for sticking up for yourself! can’t wait to see what you dream up!

Having your dress made is a great way to ensure you have the elements you want, at the price you need, and the fit will be perfect!

Homemade wedding dresses are the best! You get to choose every single little part of it so it is exactly the way you want it = a little envy on my part. : ) Can’t wait to see this beautiful dress!

Wow what a horrible show - when you think it couldn’t get any worse… I think you chose the best option as having a custom made dress gives you a freedom in choice and uniqueness in design that a “normal” gown never will.

I hear ya! Just to throw out another (unsolicited lol) suggestion, I looked at department stores and other stores which I shopped at normally, for dresses which I could use as a wedding dress. (I don’t buy into the “pay hundreds of dollars extra just b/c it’s a ~wedding~ dress.”) I happened to find a pretty white dress from a store I shopped at normally, for like 90% less that I’m sure I would’ve paid at a bridal store.
But, I had also definitely considered getting a dress made - I just happened to find one at the store.

Think of it this way with making a dress - your dress will be more unique and more “you” and thus, beautiful :).

“Big Bliss” is a horrible show - I was appalled at how they felt the need to give them a separate show, showed girls ripping dresses, and how Randy went on and on about how amazing Kleinfeld’s is because there a big girl can pick from TWO dresses that fit her - so insulting. Pay no attention, honey.

Yup, that’s my solution too! And it’s so much quicker! My seamstress is starting on the 22nd of this month, and she’ll be finished exactly four weeks later, which still leaves us two weeks for any last minute alterations. And it’s so much cheaper! My dress will cost roughly 400 euro - so no more than $500, I think.

Love the idea of a custom dress - as I recall (perhaps incorrectly?), Mrs. Oyster had her dress custom made as well, after having very similar frustrations. Best of luck! Can’t wait to see the final product. :)

I’m so glad you found a solution that you’re comfortable–and most importantly–happy with. Your dress is going to be one-of-a-kind amazing! I’m so sorry you didn’t have good experiences in those stores. :( Their loss.
