Mrs. Brooch, Arlington, VA Age and Occupation: 25, Writer/Editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Front Desk Manager Engagement Date: October 3, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Oxon Hill Manor About Me: I’m an indecisive girlie-girl with a motor mouth, can-do attitude, and knack for making others laugh. I dream of becoming a best selling novelist like Elizabeth Gilbert or Julie Powell (a girl can dream, right?), and love long road trips, a beautiful countryside, music, blogs, books, and all things vintage/thrift/antique/or homemade. I’m a Virgo, i.e. overly sensitive, emotional, and critical, and there’s no such thing as short and sweet in my world. I want to say and do it all. Mr. Brooch grounds me. I point where to go and he figures out the way. He’s a pragmatic fancy-pants who enjoys video games and movies. We both adore our mutt, Rocky, and spending time with our amazingly supportive family and friends. We’re planning a garden wedding with a formal reception with lots of whimsy and unique, Southern-inspired details.

Wash My Feet at Our Wedding?

March 8th, 2011 @ 5:28 pm by Mrs. Brooch

While I totally understand the symbolism and spiritual significance, I’m not sure it’s feasible to do a this type of thing at our wedding. Part of me really likes the idea, because we’re not going any other ritualistic types of things (i.e. a sand or candle ceremony), but the other part of me thinks washing each other’s feet could get a little messy (literally and logistically).

When I researched the subject, I found this beautiful wedding video.

Skip to 3:00 minutes for the foot washing…

I’m sort of at a loss for words, which never happens to me! I think the ritual was really sweet and special at this ceremony. The song that was played and the look on the bride and groom’s face totally made me want to cry! I’m still not sure how I feel about us doing it, though.

Have you ever seen anything like this at a wedding? What’s your opinion of it?

I haven’t seen anything like this before - The ceremony was so sweet! And the music was the icing on the cake. She looks so happy! But I know I couldn’t do something like this since I’m ticklish lol and my feet are big and even though my FI likes them I don’t like broadcasting it to the whole world :P This is definitely something new

I think she was on Say Yes to the Dress, I remember the head scarf. Or at least some wedding show that I’m hopelessly addicted too :) Very beautiful, fits the woods kind of wedding, proabbly not going to work for a traditiona church wedding like I’m having though.

It’s a very sweet idea, but I won’t even go for a pedicure for fear of kicking some unfortunate beautician in the head! I kick like an ass when I’m tickled. It would indeed be a memorable wedding hahaha…

When I first heard of this, I was all…um WHAT. But then I saw it done at one of my friends’ ceremonies, and it was SO perfect for them. I teared up. Probably because I’m so happy he found a girl who loves him all the way down to his gross feet :) hehe

Mr. E is super ticklish on his feet, don’t know if he would be able to handle this, haha.

I am so anti-feet (my own included!) that it totally wouldn’t work for me. But what a unique idea!

In hindu weddings the bride’s father washes the groom’s feet and nowadays it’s done a lot more symbolically rather than literally washing feet. It’s more like a trickle of water over the feet then a full on scrubbing.

It looks something like this: http://image.shutterstock.com/display_pic_with_logo/91584/91584,1252868893,15/stock-photo-a-groom-has-his-feet-washed-during-a-traditional-hindu-indian-wedding-ceremony-37148479.jpg

You’d still have to take off your shoes (something I’m struggling with when looking for wedding shoes - they have to be easy to take off!) but it seems like you do do this easier than pulling out a bucket!

I’ve never heard of this ritual before! The bride and groom in that video are so sweet. :) Like some of the PPs, I would unfortunately be a giggling, convulsing mess because of how ticklish I am on my feet!

I’ve been wanting a foot washing ceremony, but am having trouble convincing my man of it. He seems to think it’s an exclusively Christian wedding tradition, which we are not. Anyone heard of it being used in a non-Christian ceremony?

This is soooooo NOT my wedding style with the earthy nature scene, but I am MOVED by them. I actually have tears in my eyes. How beautiful to see a couple who is living in the spirit of the Lord. I may have to find a way to incorporate this in our wedding.

Yep…I’m with PP–not something I would want to do, but I was so moved by this entire video. Passion!

This isn’t something I would do, but seeing how emotional and meaningful it was for them made me really happy (:

@Cornhusker: Thank you! The first time I watched the video I thought I recognized that girl and then I was driving myself crazy about where I could possibly know her from. She was definitely on Say Yes to the Dress. Sadly foot washing is not for me.

I actually have thought about incorporating this too, because of how deeply personal it is. I love the idea! But, I am also just not sure how it would fit in! Glad you’re thinking about this too, though.

My cousin and her husband did it at their wedding and it was very beautiful, especially if you understand the Christian background of it. They had washed each other’s feet the first time they met (in college youth group), again when they got engaged, and then again at the wedding. Loved. it.
