I love all things design, sewing, flea markets, and a good book. I’ve been known to swoon over a well-designed chair and often find myself craving a new addition to my chair collection regardless of the lack square footage in our home. I’m Mexican American girl who hates all things spicy but loves her rowdy Mexican family and her Latin roots. My wedding muses may not be your typical wedding superstars, but with a lot of DIY, a dash of offbeat style, and lots of love and laughs, Mr. Cotton and I plan to create a day that is unmistakably us.

Dresses and BBQ

March 9th, 2011 @ 2:43 pm by Mrs. Cotton Candy

This past weekend my mom hosted a BBQ at our family home for the sole purpose of sitting down and speaking with my seamstress. While some may think it’s odd to discuss the details of a wedding dress over a plate of yummy yummy chicken and pasta salad with my ultra-traditional Mexican mom, this is just the way things are done and I wasn’t complaining. We had an excuse to gather up our wedding party, pig out on tasty food, and talk dress. Sounds like a good time all around.

After helping ourselves to some yummy food, we sat down to discuss budget and what would look best on my body. We came to the decision that the dress would have a cap-sleeve illusion top, a sweetheart bodice, and an A-line skirt with a high/low hemline. Need a visual? Yeah, me too!

The bodice will be very similar to this one and will also include the crumb-catcher waist detail:

The only difference will be the neckline, which will be shaped similarly to this one:

The skirt of the dress will be an A-line with my beloved high/low hemline. I was a little worried that I would get some resistance when I shared my inspiration for the skirt, but everyone including my mom was excited when I showed them the pic.

Next step will be to start sourcing fabric. I’m 90% sure we’ll be going with silk Dupioni for the skirt, but as of today I’m undecided on the type of lace to use for the bodice. I’m leaning toward an Alencon lace, but budget will determine our final decision.

Construction on the dress won’t begin until about the first week in April, which sounded kind of late to me, but she reassured me that the construction and fittings shouldn’t take more than a month. So all should be good to go for our June wedding date.

So what do you think? Am I crazy to wait until two months out from our date to begin construction on my dress?

Love the details! Can’t wait to see how it comes out, but I’m guessing it will be gorgeous - not to mention unique! I would not be worried about the timeline and at least you’ll be sure the dress will fit you like a glove!

Don’t panic when you see the cost of the alencon lace. I am making the bolero to my dress and for the lace alone it was $270, which didn’t include the scalloped alencon trim for the edges on the short sleeve, etc. I would say it is completely worth it because it is so beautiful!

Love!! You are going to be so beautiful!

And you’re not crazy at all. We had the girls bridesmaids dresses created in just a couple weeks. She can totally get it done in a couple months for you.

Absolutely not crazy at all! Don’t let the crazy wedding industry freak you out in regards to timelines! My dress was made in about a month and a half from start to finish. I used silk Dupioni for the skirt and a beautiful lace for the bodice. My straps were made out of the dupioni. I loved my dress!!! I wish I could wear it every single day. Best decision ever to have it custom made and designed just for me!! Just don’t let a horse sneeze on you during your bridal portraits (yes really happened) and absolutely do not take it to the cleaners…the chemicals affect the make-up of the natural fabric…hard lessons learned but thankfully my dress-maker saved the day!

Best wishes! Can’t wait to see the finished product! It’s a really fun process!

@kim: Agreed! I’m making my dress and gave myself 4 months to do it, hoping to be finished by May. Now, I’ve only been working on it nights and weekends, and it takes me longer than most since I’m nowhere near a professional seamstress–but even still, I’m getting close to the end at least a month earlier than I thought I would! I can imagine a professional will take much less time than me.
Your vision sounds super gorgeous, so excited to see the result!

Love the Waters dress…it was the dress I went searching for but couldn’t find near me so I decided on a Paloma Blanca that had a top close to that of the neckline you’ve selected. Your dress sounds like it will be gorgeous! Can’t wait to see pictures!

I think two months is a decent lead time with a local seamstress, plus you’re not crazy enough to make the dress yourself (like me, ha) and won’t have to stress about completing the dress or a bazillion DIY projects.

Alecon IS expensive, but the texture is so rich and gorgeous, its worth it in my opinion. Plus you’re only going to be using it for the bodice.Depending where you’re sourcing your fabric, Michael Levines had a great selection of silk dupioni and Alecon lace.

I can’t wait to see the finish project <3

Eeeep! I would be nervous, but if she assures you it’s fine I wouldn’t worry. (Heck who am I kidding, I would worry because that’s how I roll) I can’t wait to see though!

The timeline makes sense to me since your dress is being custom-made. Instead of ordering a gown in an off-the-rack size and altering to fit your body your dress will be created around your body. I love your design elements; your dress will be fabulous!
