Mrs. Brooch's Picture
Mrs. Brooch, Arlington, VA Age and Occupation: 25, Writer/Editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Front Desk Manager Engagement Date: October 3, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Oxon Hill Manor About Me: I’m an indecisive girlie-girl with a motor mouth, can-do attitude, and knack for making others laugh. I dream of becoming a best selling novelist like Elizabeth Gilbert or Julie Powell (a girl can dream, right?), and love long road trips, a beautiful countryside, music, blogs, books, and all things vintage/thrift/antique/or homemade. I’m a Virgo, i.e. overly sensitive, emotional, and critical, and there’s no such thing as short and sweet in my world. I want to say and do it all. Mr. Brooch grounds me. I point where to go and he figures out the way. He’s a pragmatic fancy-pants who enjoys video games and movies. We both adore our mutt, Rocky, and spending time with our amazingly supportive family and friends. We’re planning a garden wedding with a formal reception with lots of whimsy and unique, Southern-inspired details.
About Mrs. Brooch

I agonized for months about what we should do for our guestbook. I really wanted to do Martha Stewart’s Conversation-Starter Guest Books, but making those was going to cost too much money. I also really liked the idea of having a Wedding Tree for guests to “leaf their thumbprint,” but I knew I would have no place to hang something like that in our home. I never planned to spend a lot of money for a guestbook and since I didn’t really have any money to spend anyway, I needed something free more than anything.

Finally, it came to me! I decided to go with a message board! One evening after work, I ran around the house like a mad woman gathering supplies to see if I could pull this off! I’d seen plenty of tutorials online and figured it couldn’t be that hard!

I cut, stapled, cut, and stapled…

Brides, please get a staple gun that works and don’t just use one you found in the basement!!! Mine was a real pain in the butt! I’m sure whether it was the actual staple gun or the piece of wood I used, which was thick, but the staples did not go in all the way in and we had to basically staple, then hammer.

Improvise is the name of game, folks!

Speaking of improvising, I wasn’t sure we had enough fabric from our frames left to cover the message board so I went searching through the house for something else. You won’t believe what I found: an extra large pillowcase in the perfect shade of green!! We cut it open and using spray adhesive, wrapped one whole side around the wood.

Ta da!!

Things were looking good so far and I started to get really excited! After all, I had finally settled on a guestbook, we were going to have a DIY message board, and it was FREE! Then it came time to add the ribbon and that’s when my mom and I hit a brick wall.

Figuring out how to lay the ribbon across the board was way too complex for us! We had to call my brother in for help. He measured the board (Duh! Why didn’t we think of that?) and marked the areas where we needed to cross the ribbon. Thanks, Brother Brooch!

Then we went back to stapling and hammering!

I’m not sure we got the ribbon 100 percent right, but it’ll work. I still need to buy pins or something (ideas anyone?) to add to it, but after covering the back with the other part of the pillow case, I must admit, I am pretty stoked with the final product! I still can’t believe we made this out of a piece of wood from the garage and a pillowcase!

The next step is to create little note cards for our guests to leave us a message. I really like the idea of having little phrases and prompts on them, like this:

Does anyone know the best way to make something like this?

What kind of guest book are you having?

I love the idea. It can be inexpensive as well and a permanent display in your home. You could use designer cards to match the theme of yorur wedding too.

that is SO awesome… it makes me want to scrap the Martha Stewart Conversation Starter guest books I already made (and look nothing like the website) and get handy in the basement instead!

@ktisthatbees: Thank you! I can’t believe it either. It just goes to shoe what a little determination (and a big basement) will do! @Chocolatte: Me too! It’s still sorta using the Martha Stewart idea, but with a twist. @AdrienneB: My thoughts exactly! After the wedding when I have some free time, I can make a cute book or something displaying them all ;)

If you want the exact font, I think it is this one:

Good luck!

WOW, looks nice! It looks like the ribbon in your inspiration pic is laid a little closer together - can you go back and add more? Also, the pins at the intersections will keep those cards ticked in nicely, and they won’t fall through. If that’s not working for you, try getting ribbon with elastic in it - it’ll hold your cards in place better.

I bow down to your DiY prowess. For reals, that’s incredible you made this out of stuff lying around your home! It’s beautiful!

@Ariel: Ahh! I wish I had found this a few months ago!

I just covered a bulletin board in a similar format and I used silver (they have bronze too) upholstery nails at all the crossovers of ribbon. They are bigger than tacks/pins and heavier duty.
I feel your pain on the ribbon, it took me for evah to figure out the layout of the ribbon. Great job, its awesome!

@Ariel: Thanks!! @toshella: I agree with you about the ribbon and yes, we can add more! Hopefully the second time around will be easier since we’ve already got most of the pattern up. Thanks for the advice! @Miss Tartlet: You are way too kind! I made this out of sheer desperation! LOL! Being broke and wedding obsessed goes a long way!

That’s a great idea!! I’m impressed that you had all that stuff just laying around.

One note of caution…I did the same thing at my wedding, the little slips of paper with prompts for people to add their messages & wise words. Unfortunately, most people didnt sign their name!!

While writing my TY notes, it became an issue b/c i wanted to thank guests for attending in addition to thanking them for their gift. My parents got a lot of “do you remember if so&so was there?” We had close to 200 people there, so it was hard to remember who was there w/o a record of it!

In any case, i still love the idea, even though it didnt exactly play out how I had imagined. :)

@katarina1113: That’s excellent advice! Thank you! Maybe I can add a little section on the bottom of each notecard reminding guests to sign their name!

Yay resourcefulness! I once used a pillow case to make a halloween costume….who knew they could be so handy?
