Miss Carousel's Picture
Miss Carousel, Dusseldorf, Germany/Garda, Italy Age and Occupation: 29, International Product Manager Fiance's Age and Occupation: 31, Front End Developer Engagement Date: May 29, 2010 Wedding Date: September 2011 Venue: I’m an American-Italian girl living in Germany with my Belgian fiancé, planning a wedding in Italy. I can’t wait to show our guests the wonderful Lake Garda, Verona, and want our wedding to be a fun filled, charming, day in the life of “La dolce vita.” Mr. C and I love spending time together, and have added wedding related activities to our cooking nights, dance lessons, and road trips. We love sampling restaurants, could listen to Sinatra all day, and are just a tad geeky and into technology. As we want all of our passions to be part of our marriage, what better way to start than by incorporating them in our wedding day?
About Miss Carousel

True Love is Easy

March 9th, 2011 @ 12:02 pm by Miss Carousel

At least is was for us! But it wasn’t love at first sight. We met at work in 2007, but in the beginning we were just colleagues who barely knew each other. I don’t even remember the first time we met! At the time I was still working in Milan and he was in Brussels.

But when I got promoted and relocated to Germany, suddenly we were working together a lot more! That was when I became infatuated with Mr. Carousel. I realised that he was not only an excellent worker, but also a sweet, funny, and good person.

However, I was trying hard to hide my crush since I didn’t want to come off as unprofessional. And, as any good developer, Mr. Carousel was so focused on his tasks that he didn’t notice a thing. (Me becoming as red as a tomato every time he’d catch me looking at him? Nothing. My thoughts wandering every time we’d have a conversation and having to ask him multiple times to repeat himself? He thought he was bad at explaining things.)

And then came the night that changed our lives: Mr. Carousel was in Germany for work and asked some colleagues out for dinner. As fate would have it, everyone else had plans, so it was only him and me. Our work dinner turned out to be the best first date either of us had: we had such a great time that it came naturally to end the evening with a kiss.

We then started dating and after a magical weekend in Amsterdam we were totally in love with each other. We have been together since February 2009 and, tired of the back and forth our long-distance relationship entailed, we moved in together in November 2009. He proposed in May 2010, but that’s another story. ;-)

Since we are two different people, we’ve had our discussions and even a couple of fights. However, being together has been surprisingly easy: we get along really well and can talk for hours. (We need to, as we go to work together, have lunch together, walk back home together, spend most evenings together, and average about five hours driving together every week.)

I’ve never felt so comfortable and relaxed with anyone before. I knew he was the one because of how I felt when we were together: I finally felt at home, like I could be myself 100%. Being with him made me redefine everything I knew (or thought I knew) about love, in a bigger and better way.

Was it the same with you? Did you know you had found “the one” because of how easy it felt to be together? Or do you think a relationship needs a bit more spice and conflict to keep it interesting?

I am so excited to read your inter-cultural love story, since my fiance and I are both from different countries. It will be interesting to hear the challenges, too, since I know most intercultural couples have more unique issues - deciding where to settle down and raise the family, the occasional misinterpretation due to different languages, and just in general all the cultural differences each party brings to the table. What a fun ride!

Was that picture taken at the Amsterdam Flower Market? I’m an American but living in the Netherlands right now. It will be interesting to see the European side of planning a wedding!

Aw, that’s such a cute story! Aren’t shy techy boys the best? lol!

My FI and I were colleagues too and completely oblivious to the fact that we would be a good couple because we were such great friends. When we finally got together, everything just clicked. I agree with you completely - it was SO easy, it was just meant to be. :)

I love your story, especially since your first date is similar to how ours happened (large group of people initially, but everyone ended up having plans). :)

@maggierose: Were are you and your FI from? Yes being from different countries fun but sometimes also an issue! I know my FI often misses being able to speak his native language for example…
@Chocolatte: It is important to be different in the right things! You two sound perfect for each other…
@discgirl: Yes it was!! Lucky girl, I love Amsterdam!! We sometimes talk about moving there if we don’t want to stay in Germany, I think it’s a fantastic city to live it! Are you enjoying it?

@Spinwife: And how did you finally get together?
@toshella: Lol yes, totally adorable! A bit like puppies :-)
@Miss Tartlet: I remember reading your story! It’s funny how sometimes you need fate to give you just that little push to get it started!

It’s easy to be around / love Mr. P. I knew within the first month I was never, ever letting him get away.

You guys are so cute! Love the story!
I’ve always wondered if I’d be able to work with Mr. Giraffe. I mean, sure I love the guy, but it’s got to be a little hard to spend that much time together.

That’s so sweet. I love how you say you felt at home with him. That was exactly how I described the way I felt with my then-boyfriend(now fiance) early on.

I didn’t know my FI was the one for a long time. We were great friends for many year and I kept attributing all the “signs” to that. Fortunately he did notice and finally convinced me we should give dating a try. Guess he was right!

@Miss Carousel: We are liking the Netherlands. We live in Utrecht, which I think is an amazing city (about 30 mins outside of Amsterdam). It’s less touristy and has more character than Amsterdam (although Amsterdam has a lot).

@Miss Giraffe: I admit, I was a bit nervous about this at first when he moved here. Surprisingly (or not) it’s been great! It’s really brought us closer together - so it could be easier for you than you think!
@Sunlavender: Sometimes you need to be ready for true love as well!
@discgirl: hmm interesting! Sounds like a great city
