Mrs. Magic's Picture
Mrs. Magic, Chapel Hill, NC Age and Occupation: 30, Licensed Clinical Social Worker Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Researcher Engagement Date: December 1, 2009 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Barn at Valhalla About Me: I’m a tall drink of water (5’10”!) and a Southern bride with an enormous appetite for Mexican food, good deals, anything French, and all things wedding! By day I am lucky enough to work with individuals with autism and their families. By night, I’m even luckier to be able to spend time hanging out with awesome friends, crafting, shopping, thinking about exercising, and kicking it with Mr. Magic and our two cats. I tend to have sudden, intense cravings that will not be denied (seafood enchiladas! new jeans!) and I’m prone to being a disorganized mess of anxiety and stress. After waiting (and waiting!) to get engaged, I am finally planning the colorful, fun, fabulously awesome Fall wedding of our dreams. In an effort to share the fun and craziness that is wedding planning, I’m gonna blog about it for y’all---the good, the bad, and the pretty!

Ouch! That Hurts!*

March 9th, 2011 @ 10:39 am by Mrs. Magic

OMG, does it hurt.

I recently purchased THIS workout video:

Oh, Jillian Michaels. How I love, er, loved you. I love Jillian on The Biggest Loser. She’s so witty and inspirational and really helps people work on both their inner and outer selves. Bob’s OK, too, but he does a little bit too much yoga for my tastes. I need someone to yell at me and make me fearful and so intimated that I just do whatever the hell she tells me to do. Plus, she gets amazing results! And just check out her abs—I want abs like that!

But…well…I’m not sure I love Jillian in my house. In fact, I might hate her. OK, not really, REALLY hate her like I hate Gisele and Tom Brady (I mean, what do they even talk about???), but I do kind of sort of hate her a little bit. Especially when she tells me not to phone it in. I swear, if I hear that phrase one more time, I might break the DVD in half (except I probably wouldn’t be able to because my arms are always trembling after only five minutes of working out).

The reason for this new workout plan (er, half-assed plan, really) is threefold. One, spring is near, I just turned 30, and I want to look hot in a bikini to prove to everyone (OK, myself, really) that I am not old. Two, we have our e-pic session soon, and I’d rather not be rocking flabby arms in my super cute dress. And three, well, it’d be nice to go ahead and get started and see if I can sustain this for the wedding…in October. STOP LAUGHING! It’s possible…maybe.

If you’re going to do this DVD, heed my words of advice.

  • The first time I did it, I tried five-pound weights because that’s all I had, and I assumed she was using, like, ten-pound weights. About twenty minutes in, she mentions she’s using three-pound weights. So, use two- or three-pound weights.
  • Don’t be afraid to take a break between circuits. This is probably what Jillian would refer to as “phoning it in.” But I can take a breather and keep going…or just quit. I chose a breather.
  • Skip the push ups and those side plank raises in the last circuit. I have NO idea what muscles to even use to DO those side plank raises. So, it’s OK to skip what’s hardest for you for now. You can always try it later (or not).
  • Do more of what you enjoy. Like eating Velveeta shells and cheese. I mean, like ab work. That’s my fave…for some reason it hurts less in the moment than all those squats.

Is there a workout program that you really enjoy? And how do you feel about Jillian?

*”Ouch! That hurts!” is a phrase that one of my clients with autism tends to overuse. He says it in a very high-pitched voice. He uses it appropriately when talking about a headache or a bug bite, but once said “Ouch! That hurts!” when I tried to get him to eat a tiny bite of a tomato.

“Do more of what you enjoy. Like eating Velveeta shells and cheese.”

I vote for Velveeta!

My favorite exercises (when I actually exercise) are yoga-poses. Push up and side plank are great for the shoulders, upper arms, and ab muscles but it’s really, really, really (did I say really?) hard to get used to doing them.

OMG, I am totally with you! I’ve even done Jillian workouts before (30 Day Shred is my go-to video), and the first time I did NMTZ I did half the video and felt like I was going to die. I like your suggestion to take a break when you need it - it may be phoning it in if you’re just being lazy, but when you’re getting started, sometimes it’s necessary to keep yourself going.

Good luck on keeping it up! That’s my goal as well, and my wedding isn’t until December….we’ll see how that goes.

I know *exactly* what you are talking about! I’ve used this DVD a few times and can never figure out what the heck those side plank things are either!! I actually think she is a lot nicer on this DVD that in the 30 day shred - she is so mean on that DVD!

I was completely trying to do 30 Day Shred, but I’ve got terrible knees and had to stop because all the squats meant I couldn’t walk down stairs.

Good luck with this! I think she’s a pretty great video instructor! :D

Hello! I’ve been doing this video on and off for over a year and it always does the trick. I feel the same about “phoning it in”, and definitely take breaks where needed, BUT, whenever I stick with it for a few weeks, I need fewer and fewer breaks and that’s when I start to see results! :-) Last summer I did this 5 days a week for 4 weeks up until vacation and I really was proud of my results. I even bumped up to 5 lb weights! I highly recommend this video. :-)

I have this dvd. I have yet to be able to make it the whole way through without collapsing in a sweaty heap.

I have her 30 day shred. Although I’ve stopped using it in lieu of more cardio and weights at the gym, I am hoping to resurrect it in the next few weeks. One thing that I found beneficial was putting the DVD on mute - I got SO BORED with the music, and her asides, after hearing it a million times. So, I just put on my own workout mix!

I tried the 30 day shred by Jillian, and it does not work….for me anyways…So I tried the 3 Day diet from the american heart association. I have lost three pounds in two days….that’s pretty awesome.

I hateeeeeeeee Jillian in her videos lol. I’ve done the 30DS and FI and I are currently doing her 6 week 6 pack. About a week into 30DS I started muting her and just turning on music in the background. I feel the same way about her “phoning it in” comments and I want to jump into the TV and kill her when she talks about how much she’s sweating/feeling the workout after she walks around and critiques the people who are actually doing the moves haha. Her workouts really do get results though!

While I don’t have Jillian’s videos, I definitely have tried similar boot camp-esque workouts and I *totally* made the same mistake of using what weights I had at home. I could barely use my arms the next day!

I am so sore RIGHT NOW…from my half hour of free personal training at the gym! Am I supposed to just work through the pain…or eat the Velveeta shells and cheese?

Also, Mrs. Lam just turned me on to yoga, and even that leaves me sore! Is this normal?

I know myself. I know I could never buy her workouts and not end up yelling at the tv, never using it again. Best of luck!

I personally prefer weight lifting at the gym, however having viewed Jillian’s videos I think they are a good way to mix things up.

Also, I appreciate that she notes that the videos alone will not make you lose weight. Some people simply do the videos and expect results, that’s not how it works to be honest. Weight loss is 80% diet, 20% exercise (or at least that what most of us personal trainers believe). You can’t say something didn’t work because you didn’t lose weight, sorry to say that means you didn’t work, i.e. you did the exercise part but not the diet work that was needed. All exercise works in the sense that it burns calories and if you keep your body in a calorie deficit you will lose pounds.

Keep up your hard work! I’m sure you will look great for your photos.

I did the 30 Day Shred in the run up to my wedding and it worked. I lost so many inches that my dress ended up being too lose on the day of!

Hahah! This was a hilarious post. I have this DVD and 30 Day Shred, plus the Biggest Loser Cardio Max, and Bob’s STUPID yoga one (I HATE BOB), and on and on … I told Mr. Panther that I needed to start going to group fitness classes at the gym because I couldn’t help “phoning it in” at home.
