Modern Instrumentals

March 9th, 2011 @ 12:37 pm by Mrs. Prairie Dog

Wedding ceremonies, to me, have great opportunities for instrumental music: for seating, for processing, for performances, recessionals, even for post-wedding videos.

I listen to a lot of instrumental music, so I thought I’d share a few secular favorites.

1. Perpetuum Mobile - Penguin Cafe. Silly name, awesome orchestra.

2. Planetarium Suite - Chris Lennertz, for the sweet movie Adam.

3. Thursday - Takenobu. Found this eclectic ditty via Pandora. I gave it a thumbs-up as soon as it reached the 1:30 mark.

4. January Rain - David Gray. High school-aged Pdog introduced me to David Gray, plus this movie has John Cusack AND a nod to Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

5. Liz on Top of the World - Dario Marianelle, preformed by Jean-Yves Thibaudet, for 2005’s Pride and Prejudice. I love this song, although it should be noted that Colin Firth is my Mr. Darcy and always will be. Sorry other sexy, brooding Englishmen.

6. Lover’s Carvings - Bibio. Props to whatever Amazon/Kindle employee has sweet taste in music, as evidenced by this gorgeous almost-instrumental song. I can totally see this being a recessional. Like it starts as the officiant is finishing it up, quietly, and then bursts in at 1:30 as the couple kisses:

7. Love Story/Viva La Vida - Jon Schmidt. I am twenty-four years old. I live in a world of music snobs, and my days are often filled with Joy Dision and The National, Joni and Dylan and of Regina Spektor B-sides. But I love Taylor Swift, and I’m not afraid to say it.

8. When I saw Adele perform Someone Like You on Jools Holland, I actually welled up. This orchestral version is breathtaking:

(The band has also covered pop hits, like Rihanna and Lady Gaga).

9. And I would never leave out what has become one of the most popular recessional post-Love Actually. Vitamin String Quartet covers a lot of modern music if you’re looking for instrumental selections.

Any instrumental music that you love?

I absolutely LOVE Adele, especially “Someone Like You,” and was looking for a way to incorporate her song into our wedding, even though it’s about a breakup. Thank you for this orchestral version! Sounds like a bridal party processional to me or intro music!

Great choices! Though I must say, as wonderful as Colin Firth is, I met Matthew McFadden when I lived in England and let me tell you… even better in person!!!

We’re using Perpetuum Mobile as our recessional this Saturday! I actually just started tearing up while listening to it because it’s so CLOSE now and I can really picture it all now. :) So exciting!
Thanks for sharing all the other songs, too, though. There are some real gems on this list! I’d also add Gabriel’s Oboe from the Mission, Nara by E.S. Pothsumus, Tarnation by Max Avery Lichtenstein, and Ross’ Concert by Jeff Danna (especially where it kicks in around 2:20)

An instrumental piece that I have loved forever and intended for a processional tune got a second listen last night. And it won’t work. :( Trying to find another place for it.

I second you on Mr. Firth. No one can replace Mr. Darcy!

Miss Prairie Dog,

I have to thank you SO much for the recent music posts. I have been absolutely lost over what to choose for our ceremony. The traditional instrumentals are a bit too formal for us but there’s so much music out there to wade through that your recommendations are super helpful!

Oh my gosh, I L.O.V.E the idea of having TS’s Love Story played on the piano for my processional!! I don’t know how the Mr. will feel about it, but ::Swoon::!!!

Also, I came :this close: to having my sister sing Someone Like You during our unity candle lighting. But then FI thought of the love song from Tangled, I See the Light (which made him tear up!), so now my sister and a groomsman will be doing that as a duet.

I love the Planetarium Suite! These are all great choices. :) One of my fave instrumental selections is “Dawn” from that same Pride & Prejudice soundtrack.

Love the song from Pride and Prejudice, it’s so hauntingly beautiful. And I second Colin Firth. You can’t beat him in that wet white shirt. Yum.

If you are holding back your favorite(s)–which I am assuming you will use for your processional–can you post it/them *after* your wedding for all of us that LOVE your taste in music??? It would be much appreciated! PS - your posts are amazing, thank you for being so awesome.
