Miss Carousel, Dusseldorf, Germany/Garda, Italy Age and Occupation: 29, International Product Manager Fiance's Age and Occupation: 31, Front End Developer Engagement Date: May 29, 2010 Wedding Date: September 2011 Venue: I’m an American-Italian girl living in Germany with my Belgian fiancé, planning a wedding in Italy. I can’t wait to show our guests the wonderful Lake Garda, Verona, and want our wedding to be a fun filled, charming, day in the life of “La dolce vita.” Mr. C and I love spending time together, and have added wedding related activities to our cooking nights, dance lessons, and road trips. We love sampling restaurants, could listen to Sinatra all day, and are just a tad geeky and into technology. As we want all of our passions to be part of our marriage, what better way to start than by incorporating them in our wedding day?

A Spontaneous Proposal

March 10th, 2011 @ 10:45 am by Miss Carousel

I knew Mr. Carousel was getting around the concept of marriage when he started mentioning how much sense it would make tax wise to make our relationship “official.” But the proposal itself was very romantic, sweet, and spontaneous.

We decided to celebrate my birthday by spending the weekend in a beautiful resort in Sauerland, an area in Germany famous for forests, lakes, and protected wildlife areas.

We drove to the Hotel Knippschild and fell in love with the area. The lush forests, the clear blue lakes, the quaint villages…We spent two days enjoying the nature and relaxing at the spa. We ate at our hotel both nights because the food was simply divine. It was during dinner the second night that we got talking about “us” and how happy we felt together.

While we were talking, I could see Mr. Carousel reaching a decision. See, one of the reasons I love him so much is because he’s always telling me what’s on his mind. And that night he made up his mind that he wanted to marry me—and the second he did, he proposed. Filled with love and happiness (not to mention good food and wine), I said yes.

There was only one problem: we were missing a ring! We were too exited to wait, so the next day we woke up early, checked out, and drove to Amsterdam for three hours to find our ring. (It was a Sunday and, for those who don’t know, in Germany EVERYTHING is closed on Sunday.)

It became a wonderful, romantic adventure! Choosing the perfect ring together is one of the moments of that weekend that I treasure the most. It also felt right to make such an important purchase in Amsterdam, which is the city where we first fell in love.

Once we chose the ring we enjoyed the city a bit more, had some burgers at the Hard Rock Cafè, and finally drove back home.

What do you think of spontaneous proposals? I always had in mind the grand planned proposals I had so far only seen in movies, but reality was so much more lovely and special!

I love the spontaneous proposal! My husband proposed “in the moment” but then decided the ring also had to be a surprise lol He purchased it and gave it to me four weeks after I said I would marry him :)

I love that you two went shopping together. The trip, the shopping, and the purchase must have been very romantic and full of excitement!

Awesome story! Hubs and I decided just a couple weeks into our relationship that we were going to be together forever (we had known each other for almost 10 years at that point though, so not like we had just met!), so once that was figured out, I knew the proposal would come eventually and I just chilled and enjoyed our life together. He spent 3 months picking out the right ring, and ended up going back to the first store he started at. He proposed on our first vacation together, and when I went to get the ring sized, I got to meet the girl who helped him pick it out, cuz her hand size was the closest to mine and he wanted to make sure he wasn’t picking out something too big! She got to hear the whole story, and she was thrilled for us! While it wasn’t a grand proposal (it was just us 2 by ourselves in our cabin on the cruise), it was totally perfect for us :)

Spontaneous ones sweep you off your feet! It’s all emotion and usually no nervous planning.

That is such a sweet story.
Mine was spontaneous as well. He asked me over nachos and mexican martinis, and I said yes. It came out of nowhere, was the best surprise, sweetest moment, and totally “us”! And then I loved that we got to pick out the ring together (and it’s even more gorgeous than I had ever dreamed it would be)!
So I love hearing about other “not-so-elaborately-planned” proposals!

@MrsTimber: A surprise ring sounds great, especially if you didn’t expect it! Almost like a second proposal :-)
@CLD: Yes I really like it here too! Where were you living?
@MrsSl82be: That sounds so sweet!! A proposal while you’re on vacation is great as then you can just enjoy each other for a bit before returning to real life!
