I love all things design, sewing, flea markets, and a good book. I’ve been known to swoon over a well-designed chair and often find myself craving a new addition to my chair collection regardless of the lack square footage in our home. I’m Mexican American girl who hates all things spicy but loves her rowdy Mexican family and her Latin roots. My wedding muses may not be your typical wedding superstars, but with a lot of DIY, a dash of offbeat style, and lots of love and laughs, Mr. Cotton and I plan to create a day that is unmistakably us.
About Mrs. Cotton Candy

Dessert + Buffet = Love

March 11th, 2011 @ 1:50 pm by Mrs. Cotton Candy

I love dessert. Given the choice between a gourmet dinner and dessert, my choice would be dessert every time. That being said, it may surprise you to know that our wedding cake ranks pretty low on our list of wedding priorities. Don’t get me wrong—I adore a beautiful wedding cake, but unfortunately our budget is stretched to its max and there is no room for us to go over budget on our cake.

Sucks, I know. What’s even suckier is that I’ve recently fallen in love with the idea of a dessert buffet. With pictures like these can you blame me?

Sigh. A dessert buffet like the ones above by the ever so talented Sweet and Saucy Bake Shop are for sure unobtainable with our meager budget, but Mr. Cotton Candy and I have been kicking around some ideas that could bring my dessert-buffet vision to life.

For starters, to display all our goodies we’ll be using cake stands and trays that we currently own. If we find that we need more we’ll hit up our local thrift store and swap meet. This will keep our display cost to a minimum and leave the bulk of our budget for actual desserts.

As for the actual cakes and desserts, we’ll be taking a semi-DIY approach. We’ll be purchasing the actual wedding cake from a local bakery, but to cut costs we’ll purchase a smaller cake that feeds about half our guest list. The rest of the buffet will be a mix of yummy Mexican pastries that can be purchased inexpensively at our local panaderia, and homemade goodies that hopefully we’ll be able to make in advance and freeze.

We’re still working out all the details and crunching the numbers to see if this will be a possibility for us, but I’m crossing my fingers that our dessert vision will become reality.

You could ask your caterer if they have any serving platters or cake stands you could borrow too, if you find you need a few more! I’m with you on both eating dessert over dinner every time and not having a big cake either!

A buffet with Mexican pastries sounds SO good! I love the ruffled cake in the last photo, and our baker said that it’s a petal decorating tip that’s used to create that effect. I also have this tutorial bookmarked, but haven’t worked up the gumption to try it myself…

That ruffled cake is amazing. AH-MAZING. And that first cake?! Coolest thing. EVER. I love it!! Sigh. That’s great you already have all of those stands/ bowls/ etc though! That should help shave costs off.

These are beautiful! I’m planning a DIY dessert buffet too. I lucked out - my MOH works in catering and is lending me some dishes from her company. We made some cake stands, too!

I too fell in love with the dessert buffet but with 200 guests and $5 a guest… um, nope! I don’t think so. However, now that you mention some delicious Mexican buffet items, I should look into that. I am in Texas, they have some really cool Tex-Mex ideas I could play around with… please tell us more about your buffet ideas.
