Mrs. Giraffe, Chicago Age and Occupation: 23, Graphic Designer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Music Student Teacher Engagement Date: October 23, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2011 Venue: Trinity Lutheran Church & Idlewild Country Club About Me: Coming from the suburbs of the Windy City, you'll often find me with my foot in my mouth while laughing for no reason or telling bad knock knock jokes. I've been crafty for as long as I can remember, and will DIY something twice over before I have someone do it for me. I'm a semi-awkward, typeface obsessed, design junkie and have been know to break out my dance moves for no reason as well as try my best to be ridiculous at all times. My love of pop culture, wordplay, and graph paper almost rivals my love of Mr. Giraffe (who is just the bee's knees). After a 2.5 year engagement, we're planning a modern-in-disguise traditional wedding, and cannot wait!
About Mrs. Giraffe

Dish Envy

March 11th, 2011 @ 4:24 pm by Mrs. Giraffe

I’m going to start out disclaimer-style and let you all now that I’m 100% aware of how ridiculous this post is. I mean, seriously, I am out of control here. After you finish reading this, we don’t have to mention it ever again. (Please don’t mention it ever again?)

You see…I have dish envy.

Yes, it’s true. I had a wonderfully amazing shower recently (that I still have to share with you!) and I received so many awesome gifts. I was totally overwhelmed with generosity and I can’t believe that people spent so much money on things for Lil’ Ol’ Me…oh yeah, and the Mister, too.

Mr. G and I were lucky enough to receive all the dishes we asked for. Due to Mr. G having 8 Giraffes in his immediate family, and me having 4, we wanted enough dishes so that we could have everyone over at the same time.

Long story short, we registered for four 16 piece place settings and received them all. That’s enough for 16 people! Woah.

I love our dishes, and I share them with you soon, but guess what happened? Yes, the dish envy.

I received a message from Eziba in my inbox yesterday showcasing the loveliest dishes ever.

Now do you believe me? Just lovely. Please, someone, go buy them!

So why am I sharing with you a set of dishes that I’m drooling over but not going to buy?

Here’s why: Mr. G and I literally spent hours and days arguing over what dishes to register for. I swear, I’ve never been so mad at him, and he wasn’t doing anything wrong, his taste is just different than mine. After a week of fighting, we finally agreed, and now I love our dishes and I love that we own the whole set.

Despite my dish envy, I’m not going to return all my new dishes just to buy those Eziba ones.

And that, my friends, is I think my first almost-married compromise. Word.

No, chance are I really wouldn’t take our new dishes back, but it’s nice that I’m actually thinking of my future home decor as “our” future home decor. Pretty cool, huh?

You and yours disagree on decor? Did you fight it out? How’d you make it work?

Those are gorgeous! I normally don’t care at all about dishes, but I really like those!

Those are really cute. My fiance and I are in our 30’s and pretty set in our ways. HOWEVER, I would say I am the one with a sense of style (not that I have that much). Honestly, I can’t imagine him having an idea on dishes, going by what’s in his kitchen :)

Love them! However, I could see myself getting confused on if they were clean or not while washing dishes if we ever used ketchup! haha.

Haha! this is a funny post. We had a surprisingly hard time picking out dishes as well. But we eventually found at a set we both really liked a lot. Our whole kitchen decor stemed from them also, and now everytime my husband sees something with a leaf on it in green he says “oh, we should get this. it will match our dishes”

To make you love your original dishes more (unless they are square too!) I think you might be sorry long-term with those red-swoosh dishes. Speaking as a woman married 28 years…the corners on those dishes are just begging to chip on ya. Or worse yet, can’t you just see someone ‘helping’ you after a holiday meal and not watching where they place the stack and then there goes a whole corner. Major sadness. If your your full-set dishes are square forget I mentioned it. ;)

We avoided this whole ordeal with fine china but not the everyday set. Once we decided, we went with a classic white so we can accessorize and dress up/down. Tough choices, Miss G.

If I let the FH pick anything out himself, we would look like he went to a furniture display and took everything down to the lamps. I buy everything and he is thrilled that the house is coming along and it is one less thing he doesn’t have to do.

I really think you’d find yourself fed up with that print before long, so don’t feel too bad about it. I grew up with a very avant-garde china set that my parents fell in love with before their wedding and it felt extremely dated after jus a few years. It too had strong prints on it, and this will actually ruin how certain food looks on the plate. For example, if we were having potatoes, we would never look down, cause the colour of the print made the yellow potatoes look almost gray and horrible, and eating carrot-based foods was simply out of the question. When I turned 20 I took most money I had in my savings account and spent it on a new china set (white and crisp) for my parents. I felt they deserved it after 20 years of seeing me squirm over my potatoes.

I like those dishes a lot, but I’m not sure how they’d actually look with food on them. I think it’s great that you guys found a pair you both loved and got all the sets you wanted.

I love that my husband has taste. I just wish it was exactly like mine, sometimes. Honestly, home decor is probably one of the things over which we bicker the most, but it has taught us to compromise. (Though he might dispute the degree to which I actually give in…)

While those heart dishes are lovely, I’m sure the dishes you have are equally beautiful! We haven’t had too many disagreements on decor…yet. I’m sure that will change once we move!

Yes we do disagree on decor. He wants a silver Kitchenmaid mixer and I want the apple green one (or, another bright color). It is like a never ending war. I’m right though…I know it. :-)
